CJ28 Doesn't like COPS. Says "It's hard being young, black and rich"
NFL Star Chris Johnson -- Why Are The Cops Here? | TMZ.com
I think Chris was right about the "suspicion" of drugs being moved in and out of his condo, but sometimes athletes really need to stop this "their out to get me crap" Johnson also tweeted "I should have gave them some doughnuts" |
Re: CJ28 Doesn't like COPS. Says "It's hard being young, black and rich"
I would be pissed too. People (likely black males) cant come and go from your house without the neighbors and the police thinking something illegal is going down?

I agree with that which is a joke, again it's 2011. |
Re: CJ28 Doesn't like COPS. Says "It's hard being young, black and rich"
If I'm speaking honestly, it depends on the neighborhood. I think it has nothing to do with race.
If I'm in a neighborhood with decent household income and I see dudes coming and going from a house all the time, I'm likely to think it's a guy and his buddies who love to play poker. White, black, or whatever. But if I'm in a neighborhood whose median household income is $20K - 30K, and there are lots of men coming and going from the house all the time, yes I am likely to be suspicious (and guess what, I'm likely to be right). |
Re: CJ28 Doesn't like COPS. Says "It's hard being young, black and rich"
That said, Johnson lives in a nice area. So in this case he's right, this seems like profiling.
The question is, were people profiling him because he's black, or because they know he plays in the NFL? |

really? so if some one moved down the street from you and you didn't know who they were but you saw a lot of people coming and going very frequently it wouldn't arrise any suspision in you? it's not like the cops harrased him, they were just following a tip from what it sounds like, all they were doing is their job, investigating suspicious activity. when cops go out of their way to harass people it's one thing, but when something fishy is going on is it that bad of a thing they show up? there was nothing illegal going on so they left, i see no problem. |
Re: CJ28 Doesn't like COPS. Says "It's hard being young, black and rich"
I obviously don't know Chris personally. However from what I've seen of him he's probably one of the nicer guys in the league right now. Maybe it's unfair to judge him by his look but it does put him at risk for getting noticed in the wrong way. It's not black people, society in general just prefer for others to be clean cut and well dressed so when you go out with dreads, gold teeth, baggy clothes and people know little if anything about you, then you're going to get the wrong kind of attention.
I mean compare him to other black athletes like Jordan, Bo Jackson, Dwight Howard, and Tiger Woods to name a few who at the very least maintain a sort of GQ image. Trust me if a white guy dressed like CJ28 he would be turning heads as well. Still I really do believe that Johnson is one of the better guys in the league that gives a couple of people the wrong idea based on how he presents himself. |

Frankly, yes. Crime happens in lower income areas because the people don't make much money. If I'm making $150,000 a year there's a lot more to lose if I'm caught selling drugs. There's also less to gain; the person making $150,000 doesn't need drug money to make ends meet. The people who turn to selling drugs are often lower-income and often uneducated. There will always be exceptions, but if we're talking about the most accurate way to profile somebody, it's based on income levels, not race or gender. |

That means that 95% of the time police officers have nothing to do but drive around and look for anything that resembles a crime in progress. So even when a tip as weak as the CJ28 tip comes in sometimes they'll follow it just to have something to do. |

Re: CJ28 Doesn't like COPS. Says "It's hard being young, black and rich"
I think he should try being poor again and living in the ghetto because when I lived in Southeast D.C. the cops wouldn't come at all when someone called 911. That should solve his problem.

I have co-workers all the time talking about how they have neighbors who will have people coming and going and only staying for 2 min. at a pop. What would that kinda activity make you believe is going on? I suggest calling the police. I have co-workers who talk about never before seen cars coming down their road or culdisack. What do you tell them? don't worry about it. No I tell them if they see something suspicious call the police and if possible get a tag. None of us were there and don't have any idea what exactly was going on other then to say the MTV crew was there and some (yes probably nosey neighbor) one called the cops in regards to suspicious activity. So are the cops susposed to ignore the call and not check it out? Which calls are they susposed to ignore? What if you call about suspicous activity in your neighborhood? should they ignore it? especially if there are black males involved? I know it looks like I'm calling you out Schneed10 but I'm not. Your rant was probably toward the neighbor, my rant is toward the people mad because the police were called out and were asked to do their job. The police found out he was doing nothing wrong and walked. Better yet why couldn't he tweet something like "hey just had the 5-0 at my door because of nosey neighbors." Because there is no drama in that. It sounds better to say " the po po just banged on my door thinking we was selling drugs up in here." It's all about how one looks at life and how they want to communicate. |

Re: CJ28 Doesn't like COPS. Says "It's hard being young, black and rich"
Sounds like Johnson fell victim to a stigma that has long been attached to young black men viewed as possibly conducting illegal behavior, high-end cars and constant traffic. The tipster had obviously staked claim to that stigma, suspected the possibility of wrongdoing and called the police. It happens all the time maybe just not where he lives.

The question is, were people profiling him because he's black, or because they know he plays in the NFL?
Or the accuser is a Colts fans... Doh! Seriously though, the one problem I see besides the obvious profiling is IMO Police should have real allegations of illegalities or justifiable proof before going onto onto someones property and confronting someone to ask and if what the are doing is illegal. This is still America... right? If the POLICE see something illegal even if it is something minor like loud music or public intoxication then go ahead and take care of business. But if a neighbor calls and says there are many high value cars going in and out of our neighborhood due the new neighbor, that should not be enough reason to confront the new neighbor. There is nothing illegal with that. Conduct an investigation, track the traffic, tap phone lines. That is fine. Do some actual police work before you knock on my door and point an accusatory finger at me. If at that point you find any evidence or hint that there might be something illegal going on then respond. But don't take the word of a stranger over another. |

is selling as opposed to buying so much worse? i get what he is saying i just don't like when people paint with such a broad brush and like to live under assumptions. in my life i have meet a lot of good people and a lot of shitty people, i have also known and know plenty of people who used, use, and sell drugs. some of them aren't very wealthy and some of them are. some people (not accusing you) like to think the world is a certain way when the reality is every one has their issues not just kids/people from lower income families |
Re: CJ28 Doesn't like COPS. Says "It's hard being young, black and rich"
Good post GM.
I'm white and grew up in "family housing" which was 90% black, the cops were always in the neighborhood for some good reasons and for some "typical" reasons. Most of my friends are black and I can honestly say police do judge them a little differently, BUT whites, mexicans, Indians etc could also be profiled. If u want to live a "hood" lifestyle you will always have problems with cops no matter what race u are. I can tell u about the trailer park zones in MS also where drugs and selling of drugs is just as bad. |

I never said selling drugs was better or worse than buying them. I don't think Schneed is making any absolute statements like wealthy people would NEVER sell drugs. Certainly there are plenty of people in all income brackets that have issues with drugs- being it selling or using. But I think it's a very logical conclusion to say that the likelihood of a poor person selling drugs (regardless of race) is much higher than a rich person. It's kind of a no-brainer. |
