F...26.2 Stickers

I can see that Matty has already commented on my Facebook status, but in my history of Facebook I have never had such an inflammatory response. Am I being a total douche in thinking that the people with these bumper stickers are a little bit douchey themselves?

I don't take ANYTHING away from the people who have ran a marathon, but that's kind of like putting a bumper sticker on your car that says, "I've had a child." It's a totally amazing and impressive feat that I couldn't even think of doing right now, but that's like saying, "You should totally be impressed by me and because of my bumper sticker, I am better than you."

Maybe it's the PBR talking, but I don't see how anyone can defend the reasoning behind having one of those bumper stickers...

I have driven my car more than 26.2...does that count?

WTF is up with all these "Jesus is _____" stickers? In just one year they've spread like wild fire.

I don't see the big deal. It's no diff than I'd rather be golfing, etc

Sure it can be pretentious but whatever

Maybe, but just recently I've seen a TON of these. I probably should stop being so critical considering I've never come close to running one, but jeebus it seems so "Look at how awesome I am."

That's what they mean ? WOW, there are a lot of physically fit people in the world then. I've got a bumper sticker for you, 26.2 means that's how many Double Stuffed Oreo's I ate today !

Re: F...26.2 Stickers

I'm on the fence with this one. Generally, I hate any and all bumper stickers because I could care less about some strangers opinion, like/dislike, political affiliation, etc. But I can understand that if you've just accomplished something that your very proud of then you want to tell the world. As a runner, I don't think of myself as a "I'm a better person than you because I ran a marathon" kind of guy. But, I haven't bought a 26.2 bumper sticker either. I really don't think putting one on makes you any more of a douche than putting OBX or whatever on your car. Whatever, it's early. I have a 25k trail race in a couple of hours to get ready for. They're giving out free "25KTR" bumper stickers to all the finishers!

Took me a while to figure out what 26.2 was all about... In my best Christian Bale voice I say Oh good for you!!

TMC, do you have a sticker from your college on your car? To me it's not that different.

I mean I know what you mean; stickers like that in general can be pretty douchey, but I don't think it's that big of a deal.
The bumper stickers I hate are the "My Kid Is On The Honor Roll At..." especially when it's for an elementary school; and even more so when they follow it up with multiple "And Again" stickers. If your kid wins a Nobel Prize or the Pulitzer then I'll be impressed, but I don't really care that little Billy got a bunch of B's in the 4th grade.

My friend in my last post had the exact same response as you. I think I'm being way too sensitive and yes, those stickers annoying. I do have a sticker of my college on my car but I don't feel like it's saying, "I GRADUATED COLLEGE MOTHA F***A!" I understand it's a point of pride, but it's just so lame.

I actually had to delete my post because people CALLED me to yell at me for it. One of them I hadn't spoken to in years... They were like, "You try and do it!" I didn't say I could do it and I'm impressed by people too, but this is akin to my OBX sticker post where I feel like it's acting like they're better than you.

LOL I agree with you TMC. A bit douchy. Great you did it, but a proclamation to the world isn't needed IMO.

It's more like "hey look at me, I am so cool and I ran a marathon". Do you think any professional runners put up 26.2 stickers on their car? No. They don't because they realize it is a n00b thing to do. They probably laugh at cars when they see it.

HAHAHAHA, now that you say that, that makes a ton of sense. I mean we've ALL done things that are physically exhausting. Should anyone who's played and practiced for a sport in their life have a sticker saying, "I played four years of high school football."?

Maybe I should get a bumper sticker that says I'm an ultra-sensitive douche. :(

I have to stop getting bothered by stuff like this, lol.

I notice (and get annoyed) by a lot of things like this that most people deem "small". I hate accepting things society thinks are alright mainly because I think they are dumb(anything Apple for example). I guess we would make for great comedians!

I am glad I am not the only one who looks at the world like this.

I think bumper stickers in general are stupid, especially all the political ones. But really, no one gives a shit how far you've ran, if your kid gets A's in school, if you like Obama, if you want to co-exist, if you've been to VT, if you want to consider WWJD, if you're against war and abortion, or any other damn thing. Keep that crap to yourself. NO ONE cares. I have a UF alumi license plate frame, but that's as far as it goes.

My wife has a 13.1 on her car, she was definitely proud of herself for doing it and in no way is saying she is better than those who didn't.

I think TMC is is inflicting his own emotions into the sticker. Just like when someone reads a email totally wrong then what you attended it to be. My dad is that way I seriously can only write him quick answers otherwise he take the whole thing out of context.

Re: F...26.2 Stickers

I agree, the 26.2 is douchy. If you graduated from a good college and you put that sticker out there, I don't mind that because that's a REAL accomplishment.

Gee you ran 26.2 miles at one time. Is that hard? Sure. Does it mean much of anything? No.

On the kids' honor roll bumper stickers, I do have a bit of a different opinion though. I agree it comes across pretentious until you think about it from the 6 year old's point of view. He just got a good report card, he's proud, he sees other kids' moms with the bumper sticker on the car, and now he's earned it too. Are you as a parent going to tell him no?

If you did, you'd be a bigger douche than the parent who displays them proudly.

Re: F...26.2 Stickers

I don't know. I run a good amount. I'd never put a sticker on my car like that because I think it is a little too boastful for my taste but at the same time I don't see them and think the person is a dick. I generally think it is more of a "I'm in the club" type thing.

Ruhskins 06-06-2011 09:43 AM

Re: F...26.2 Stickers

Wait, people actually buy these things? For some reason I thought they were given out when you ran a marathon or something. I'm not a big fan of bumper stickers, and the only one I have is a small Terps sticker on my old Chevy Tracker. I don't really care by the 26.2 stickers, but I can see your point TMC.

I agree with you on that. I was actually thinking that when people were slamming the honor roll bumper stickers. I think I remember pressuring my parents into putting one of mine on their car at one point and I think they resisted a little. As an adult, I can understand why they resisted; I don't really like bumper stickers, but when I'm a parent, I think I'll just put it on there so that my child can feel good about it.

Re: F...26.2 Stickers

What makes these stickers even more repulsing is the fact that they're missing the time factor. I mean, If you can do it in less than 2 hours and 20 minutes that's a pretty damn great accomplishment.

I think I can easily run 26.2 in about 10 hours. I'm going to shoot for that this summer.

Re: F...26.2 Stickers

My wife bought me a 26.2 magnet and some other running-related stuff two years ago after I crossed the finish line of marathon #5, and I put the magnet on our car. That and a sticker I bought of my favorite MLB team ten years ago are the only things on our car. I didn't realize that the magnet is a source for such angst on the part of others, or that people would be drawing the conclusion that I'm a "douche," so maybe it's time to take it off.

Re: F...26.2 Stickers

There are two types of people in this world when it comes to bumper stickers...those who do and those who don't put them on their car. Generally, those who do are more aggressive and pretentious by nature. I consider them all to be douchebags. I know that I have just pissed off half of the board, in particular those who may reside in southern Virginia.

I do not post my accomplishments on a car nor hang them on a wall in my house for that matter. I know what I have done and I do not have to blurt it out to the entire world to see. Besides, it defaces the value of the automobile.

I honestly believe that the title should be F...Bumper Stickers, but I digress.

I don't consider my Dad a douche even though he did tell me no. Instead he let me plaster them all over a wall in the garage. Which was a suitable replacement to me at the time.

I personally would not put bumper stickers on any car I own, but can understand why people do it. I just don't care enough to care that you ran 13.1, 26.2, 5k, that your family went to Harvard/Virginia Tech/Montgomery College over the years, that you're pro-choice and voted for so and so in 1988. If you want to display them, more power to you. I'm just not gonna let it bother me as it has TMC.

The ones that get me are those cartoony family ones that shows Dad, Mom, their 4 kids and their 27 pets. My wife and I are convinced they were created by serial killers so they could victimize their prey easier.

The only thing that makes those worst is if the stick figures are wearing Mickey Ears.

There is a gay couple at my son's day care and they have two women stick figures and a baby one, kind of makes laugh. I admire them for not hiding who they are and just wanting to be like everyone else.
