Idiot bicyclists

alright so this has been driving me crazy for the past few weeks ever since all the lance armstrong wannabees decide to get all decked out in their spandex and f up my morning and evening commutes. i recently moved to woodbridge last fall and drive up and down rt 123, ox rd quite a bit. for those of you who don't know 123 is a 4 lane divided highway with a speed limit of 55 that is one of the major north south routes in northern va. now that it is getting warmer more and more bicyclists are out riding up and down rt 123 which is great seeing as how they have a nice wide path, easily 6 feet, that they can ride in, most people stay on the path and abide by the crosswalk signals. however there are now more and more of these asshats that think they are too good for the path and want to ride their bikes in the god damn shoulder of the road. as you can see in this picture i came across two of the douchiest yet the other morning riding side by side on the should at 8:30 am with an empty path 20 feet to their right, um WTF!!!!! (and no i didn't care if i hit them as i went for my phone either, f em) i now make it a point to not move my truck to avoid these assholes, in fact most times i yell out my window to get on the f-ing path as i drive by. i have encountered assholes on bikes before in north springfield where they would form giant groups and ride 40 or 50 deep down the street not stopping at stop signs and abiding by any taffic laws whatsoever. after readin tmc's thread on dickholes with 26.2 stickers i figured i would see if i am alone in my hatered or even see if one of you bicyclist wanted to try and explain why you chose to endagner yourself and everyone driving on the road. anyone else have trouble with team live strong anywhere else? |
Re: Idiot bicyclists
I don't like the outfits with sponsors. If you actually are, then feel free to wear it. If not, laaaaaaaaame. I think we have a similar thread somewhere, but yah, it's like that here too. They'll run the stop sign when they want to be treated like a pedestrian but slow up traffic when they want to be treated like a car.
I think I need to get some anger management. Too much stuff bothers me. :( |
Yeah I hate those morons too. I like to bike but I don't understand the need to wear those dorky outfits. Tour de morons.

Re: Idiot bicyclists
I find myself taking Beach Rd from Chevy Chase to Rockville for work pretty often, and I can say that I cannot stand most cyclists. I've posted about this on here before (too lazy to dig up the thread right now).
My beef with cyclists is the majority that I've been on the road with want to ride in regular lanes of traffic, they want all the privileges of cars, and yet obey none of the rules motorists do. Stop signs are the worst. A few months ago I rolled down my window and screamed at a guy who went straight through a stop sign while I was making a left hand turn. I had to slam on my brakes to keep from clipping him straight off his effing Schwinn. I see it constantly. And yeah, all these idiots with their fancy spandex... Especially when chubby and/or old people wear it... You're not Lance. Not even close. Please dress appropriately. |
Re: Idiot bicyclists
I see how it is. I mention I've gotten into cycling in the running thread and now you start this?
Well, I'm not going to speak for every cyclist. But I'll defend myself. I don't wear sponsored gear. The contract fell through. I generally ride on trails but occasionally I do have no choice but to ride on the shoulder (there are some paths where bikes simply aren't allowed, only pedestrians). Admittedly, as a bit of a cycling novice I get a little intimidated on busy roads. And before I got into cycling, I would get annoyed by people biking on the road. But really, it's on the shoulder...so they're not exactly in your way. But let me see if I got this right? It's ok to pull out your phone and take picture of them while driving...but these cyclists driving off the side of the road are endangering you and themselves? In the meanwhile: [YT]wsCncAdwdIg[/YT] |
Re: Idiot bicyclists
Around here I see that bullshit all the time. Awesome bike paths all over the place, just moments from the W&OD trail, yet some dickbag has to go slow on the road, not obey any signs, and basically cause traffic issues. I'll also be walking down the street and have someone fly by on the sidewalk.
Bikes have their place, but it's not on the roads. If the road doesn't have an acceptable shoulder for you to drive on, then piss off. The picture taken I'm okay with surprisingly. Still silly not to be on the bike path, but they have a considerable amount of room, in Arlington they have maybe 6 inches of shoulder. I don't give any way either, I hold my car steady and hope they don't smack into me. I treat bicyclists a lot like deer, I try not to hit them -- but if I do they probably ran into me. |

Re: Idiot bicyclists
The only thing worst than bicyclist are the idiots that slow down to 15MPH on the freeway for 2 minutes so they can take a picture of dudes ass in spandex as they ride their bike.
I enjoy mountain biking but I don't do much road riding. Why do bicyclist bother people so much? Sure there are a million idiot riders that don't follow the traffic signs or proper bike lanes but there are 200 million idiots that get road rage at first sight of a road bike. In Southern California, Bikes are a big part of most poeples daily life. They are allowed to share the road with motor vehicles. Why do people feel entitled to plow through people simply because they can? MLM in action: [YT]GnR2ysyaoH4[/YT] |

Re: Idiot bicyclists
My least favorite is when they use the road when they're right next to a sidewalk with no one using it. The ironic thing is they probably avoid the sidewalk because they're scared of getting stuck behind someone.

I don't know what the rules are in Virginia, but here in New York there are times when I'm biking on the sidewalk and then there's a sign that says no cycling so I have no choice but to detour to the side of the road for a bit before heading back to the sidewalk. It's that way in parts of DC as well

Not too much of that in the great land of No. Virginia. Perhaps in some of the cities like Alexandria and Arlington but haven't seen signs like that anywhere really. As mentioned, there are a bunch of bike trails in the area. |

I've had cops tell me to get off the sidewalk before, so yeah, bikes belong in the road in some states depending on the law. |

I agree nothing wrong with the pic in the original post here, well except for the dorky outfits. Big fail for that alone.

now you are gonna knock my photo skills? i guess it's hard to picture the line of 20 or so cars behind me braking to slow down and causing others to swerve out of the way. i get in the city you ride on the street, they even have lanes for bikes in a lot of places in dc now, but this ain't dc, and this isn't alexandria or arlington either. this is way outside the city on a highway, with a path right next to them, to me the intelegent choice would be the path. |

For me, cyclists suck because the vast majority (at least here in the DC area) have ZERO desire to follow the rules of the road like cars have do, yet they want all the respect on the road that cars get. No sir. Also, if cyclists are riding in a group single-file on the right side of the right lane, cool. Fine with me. I'll just slide by. It's when a troop of these goofballs in their spandex are spread out 4 wide in a lane of traffic and no one can pass. Guess what? I'll be laying on the horn until you move. I've done it before, I'll do it again. They always end up getting out of the way. Don't get me wrong, I don't go out looking for trouble with cyclists. Just the contrary. I'm into fitness and I respect the exercise and hard work they are putting in. But if you want to share the road, then do it respectfully. Stop at stop signs and red lights. Be mindful of cars needing to pass because you're moving so much slower. Use mirrors and hand signals. This doesn't happen at all around here. Take one ride down Beach Drive in MoCo on a sunny day and you'll immediately see exactly what I mean. So yeah, until that changes, eff cyclists (most of 'em anyway- SS gets a pass because, well, he's SS). |
Re: Idiot bicyclists
In Md if there is a bike path, bicyclists by law are supposed to use it, if there is no bike path they are supposed to move as far over to the shoulder as possible.
I also get annoyed with cyclists who want to be treated like another vehicle on the road taking up a lane only to have them blow through a stop light or make a left on red. Ive just grown to accept it as much as I can. Its alot like motorcycle safety awareness week. Your saying car drivers have to be more aware of the pack of aholes on rice cookers weaving in and out of rush hour traffic at 90 mph? |

Show some common courtesy for riders. Most of them know what they are doing and are abiding by laws. --------------------------------- This I have to disagree with. Most dont follow the laws. Ive read bicyclist blogs, researched the laws a year ago . . your community (atleast the blogs I read) recognize that they as a whole have a problem with not following the laws of the road and they contribute to the hate relationship with motor vehicles and bicyclists sharing the pavement. |
Re: Idiot bicyclists
Probably already said but I really don't mind them riding if there is a designated riding lane on the road. Usually thats wide enough for the cyclist. However what really irritates me are the nimrods who think it's no big deal to ride on a two lane road with no cycle lane. In other words they are taking their riding on the roadways and honestly here in VA the rule is they either keep up with the speed of traffic or they could be ticketed due to hindering traffic.
They want to ride, go ride in a community or park or something why take up the road and cause traffic to back up cause they can't get around you safely? |
Re: Idiot bicyclists
I mean look, I too don't much care for it when cyclists (or anyone) openly disobey the rules of the road, but honestly-up here at least-I really don't see that. For the most part, we/they aren't trying to get in anyone's way at all. You think it's fun to ride a bike with a truck barreling down on you?
Furthermore, the picture in the original post basically sucks. It's two cyclists not in anyone's way on the shoulder of the road. Maybe it's nitpicking on my part, but that's the visual evidence presented to start this thread as to why cyclists are idiots...and really it shows nothing. |

I'm going to go on a limb and say that doesn't apply to cyclists. Sometimes they are forced to go on a two lane road. It's just the way it is my man. Road cyclists need the open roadway to achieve those goals when riding. |

The cyclist were clearly not in the road way or bothering him other then possibly their clothing? Wait till he's on an old country road and finds one or two of them peddling away at a snale's pace. Smoot, I can understand how one would feel about a dump truck or tractor trailor barreling down on you if you are the bicyclist but.... they don't have to be there. They can go to different developements and ride all day with out one worry of a dump truck or hopefully tractor trailor possibly hitting them but no they would prefer to ride in the road way. Bicycles are allowed on the road way as long as they can keep up with the speed limit and obey traffic laws. Unfortunatly most don't. They get on 2 lane country roads with speed limits of 45 mph. They get on 4-6 lane roads on a busy Sat. morning and .... pass the traffic at stop lights, slow down, then continue throught the red light if there is no cars entering the intersection. The other bicyclist I just seem to love are the people who think they must still ride on the opposite side of the road or against traffic. In VA it's ride with traffic, walk against traffic. |

You really aren't practical in your idea. You are talking about cycling in inner city with those speed limits. Cyclist can't stop/start for lights every block. It would defeat the purpose. Cyclist speed has nothing to do with the actual speed limit. |

Cyclist speed has nothing to do with the actual speed limit.
I'll concede that I thought there was a law in regards to bicycles having to be able to do the speed limit. There is not. Atleast not for bicycles. However, you said it would be unpractical for bicyclist to ride in parks or communities becuase they need to be able to ride 15 to 25 mph and it would be difficult. I'll again agree it might be difficult in some parks because some parks are small, but most communities are already set for 25 mph. Plus I doubt very seriously a cop will pull you over because you were bicycling at 35 mph in a community. But it's rediculous to find a bicyclist on an old country road riding 25 to 30 mph on a 45 mph road. With hills and curves on top of it. Many of times I get cars in the opposite direction flashing their lights because just over a rise or hill there is a bicyclist, or just around a curve there is a bicyclist. To go along with it a bicyclist on a two lane road during rush hour traffic. You can't get around for fear the on coming vehicle will hit you so your stuck with cars all lined up behind waiting for a good opportunity to get around the cyclist. Look, you want to be a tour de france rider good for you but find a good place and safe place to cycle. I'm not talking the cyclist who runs erands through NYC. I'm talking about the nit wits on old country two lane roads. But even the cyclist who are in the city need to follow the rules of the road, ie; traffic lights. |

alright so this has been driving me crazy for the past few weeks ever since all the lance armstrong wannabees decide to get all decked out in their spandex and f up my morning and evening commutes. i recently moved to woodbridge last fall and drive up and down rt 123, ox rd quite a bit. for those of you who don't know 123 is a 4 lane divided highway with a speed limit of 55 that is one of the major north south routes in northern va. now that it is getting warmer more and more bicyclists are out riding up and down rt 123 which is great seeing as how they have a nice wide path, easily 6 feet, that they can ride in, most people stay on the path and abide by the crosswalk signals. however there are now more and more of these asshats that think they are too good for the path and want to ride their bikes in the god damn shoulder of the road. as you can see in this picture i came across two of the douchiest yet the other morning riding side by side on the should at 8:30 am with an empty path 20 feet to their right, um WTF!!!!!
At least they're riding on a road with plenty of space on their shoulder so you don't have to risk your life going into the other lane into oncoming traffic as you're approaching the peak of a hill that you can't see over...or be forced to slam on the brakes and stay behind them until you crest the hill and can see. We get idiot bicyclists here that ride on roads where they have to ride ON the white line...sometimes in the CAR LANE because there's no shoulder. I should get a bike sticker on my car and put a few red Xs under it...maybe they'll think I'm a killing machine and get off my road. NOW, the city I work in decided to add a bike lane on the two 1-way streets I both come into work on and go home on. They reduced these streets to one car lane and one bike lane, that in the month since the idiotic move I have not seen a single bicycle in! It's hell for rush hour trying to go home, especially on Fridays. It's the two streets one block on each side of the main street running through center city. Two very busy streets for traffic. Stop electing these tree-huggers in the city, people. They have an art district with flowers painted on parking meters and now as many bike lanes as car lanes...but no one is using the bike lanes while CARS are backed up! |
