I thought So Many People Where Looking For Work

So I have had an add out for over a week now with only one response. That response was half a$$ and she then called back to ask if she could use me for her unemployment. My add is pretty open to just about anyone so its not like I'm limitting it too much. I called someone else looking for and employee and they are having the same problem. I had more calls coming in before I placed my add from people just looking for umemployment referals and now that I actual need someone they are no where to be found. I say its time to start kicking people off unemployment and making them go back to work.

I woulda like to have heard your response.

I dont agree with kicking people off, but we need to seriously look at the system.

Kind of vague on the subject. What is the job for? What are the qualifications? What part of the country do you live in?

Yeah, is this one of those commission only no benefit type jobs?

I posted an ad on craigslist last week and received 100 resumes by the end of the day.

It's a general warehouse job, Part time.

Firstdown, certainly you are not using your own anecdotal experience, rather than firm unemployment statistics, to make this argument.

I mean, terrorists have never attacked my house. Should I then conclude that there is no such thing as a terrorist?

It greatly depends on the job and where you're advertising it. When I had an entry level financial analyst job open back in the winter, I advertised it on tons of college boards and my inbox filled up because of resume submissions.

Putting a help wanted ad in the local paper, for example, is a horribly inefficient way to advertise for a job. Not saying that's what you did, but you have to consider how many qualified eyes your job ad is reaching.

Administrative assistants, insurance agents etc. should all hit sites like career builder, and most importantly, LinkedIn.com. Leverage your own personal networks. If you're not on LinkedIn, get on it pronto.

We tried to hire a administrative assistant about a year ago. The one we really wanted turned the offer down because she would only "earn" slightly more by working and paying to send her kids (2) to daycare then she would by staying home and collecting unemployment. What parent would turn down a opportunity to spend more time with their young kids? When her unemployment drys up shell go back to work and her excuse wont be that she couldnt find a job and thats why she hasnt worked in 2 years, it will be that she decided to spend time with her children while they were still little. I don’t want to give too much away….. but im younger, not married and I don’t have kids. If I were to get laid off I would collect the highest amount possible (around 22k). Since I am younger I don’t have much in the way of qualified retirement savings so I would also be eligible for some food stamp assistance in VA (means tested). I don’t have a lot of fixed expenses, a lot of my current income is used for purely discretionary spending. Like the mother who decided to stay home with her children for 2 years while getting paid, I too would have a very difficult time forcing myself to accept a job when given the opportunity to do soooo much more. Who would pass up a sabbatical in their 20’s? Or what parent would pass up time to spend with their children? There are a lot of people who truly need unemployment, but there are also a lot of people who just like options it gives them.

That just goes to show how the young recent college grads have been the ones who've suffered most from the downturn in the job market. So many of them are out of work.

With that many it was easy to find one whose academic record stood out. The winner had a BS in Finance from Wharton, Summa Cum Laude.

I also had a Georgetown, a Carnegie Mellon, and a Chicago grad to choose from. Good market for employers looking for young talent, bad for the kids.

If you're interested in building anything resembling a meaningful career, the worst thing you can do is stay out of work for an extended period of time.

To prospective employers, the longer you're out of work the worse you're regarded. It says that you either haven't been able to beat out others for available jobs (you're not that good) or that you haven't been looking very hard (that you don't care).

I absolutely agree however I place a greater value on a paid sabbatical during the most unrestricted years of my life then I do on a red flag that can be creatively explained away and that will be diminished exponential over time. Plus I think a work history gap vs. temporary job or taking a job that youre overqualified for can create just as much confusion or questions regarding your worth to prospective employers.

I wouldn’t squander the “opportunity” to sit out of the job market for 2 years either. I would search for a dream job in a dream location, work towards professional credentials, do what it takes to make a career switch, give that business idea you have a shot, do a cross country road trip, get in extremely good shape, go on a epic bender, post more on thewarpath, ect.

No it wouldn't derail anything, it would just reveal that you don't have your priorities aligned well enough. Is that judgmental? Hell yes, but that's what the interview/hiring process is all about.

Just my 2 cents.

How can you collect unemployment for 2 years? Doesnt it have a cut off after 6 months or something? Based on how much you put in? taken out of your SS contributions?

You can get unemployment up to 99 weeks depending on what state you live in. I think in VA it works out to where you can "only" get a year and a half or so, it depends on how bad you states problems are. Its tricky though, i think the first 6 months are techniqely on the state's unemployment resources and then additional amounts are purely subsidized by the federal gov.

Theres a movement brewing called “the 99ers”. Theres a bunch of people who are coming up on the end of their 99 weeks of unemployment and are still out of work (think Cal., Arizona, Detroit areas) who want/need continuation of benefits. I think they have or are attempting to create a union of unemployed people and people who support them in order to lobby to get more entitlements and stuff.

Drug testing and city clean up work should be mandatory. Some people know how to work the system hard with no shame.

mlmpert - I completely agree with schneed. anything more than a few months off is a red flag, a year or two is a death sentence in the prof field if youve completed grad school.

I do bookkeeping for a small business on the side as a second job. We've had a few salespeople quit and are actually not finding people who actually WANT to work...either on the sales floor or direct labor.

It's true, people just do not want to work with now...not everyone, but far too many of them.

With the guaranteed unemployment for what, 2 years now, it's becoming easier to stay unemployed and collect tax payer money than take a lower-paying position. Many lazy people are actually discovering that the Government handouts are actually allowing them to make more money than if they were actually working.

Sad thing we've done to society.

It's pretty simple. If you prioritize having a good career over having a good time, the only choice is to get to work.

If you don't prioritize it that way, then nobody should want to hire you anyhow.

I used the local paper like we have done in the past. So your telling me that with all the unemployment no one is looking in the paper for jobs? That makes no sense. There maybe better ways to find an employee as you pointed out but I figured I'd get swamped.

Back about 10 years a city in our area said if your going to live in public housing you have to work so many hours per month doing up keep around the public housing. I think it was like 5 or less hours a month. You would think that it was 60 hours a week without food or water. The people raised so much he!! yelling slavery and everything else the city dropped the idea.

I was at the balt city dept of health and hygeine yesterday. Decided to sto by the HR dept on the first floor. Geezz louise there are so many freakin gov't city jobs available paying people from 42k to 88k. Alot of it is admin BS, sit on your ass jobs. The lady receptionist (orca fat) was on a personal call for a good 5 mins. After I looked over the listings on the wall I stood in front of her and waited. When she was finished, she didnt say anything to me. I asked her my question, she managed an "uh-huh".

I hate, absolutely hate how incompetent, overpaid and lazy most gov't employees are. On top of the fact they get pensions and all types of benefits the priv sector could only dream of.

Lazy overpaid gov't employees is the no 1 thing that gets me super pissed. SUch a huge huge waste of money on these "admin" do nothing jobs. Its ****ing argggghhhhhhh im driving my tractor to the reflection pool!

I have 5 friends that work for the goverment and 4 of them will tell you they are under worked and could do their job working 2 days a week. The 5th you can find every Friday morning on the golf course working his ass off and he will tell you so after each hole. I'm not saying all goverment workers are lazy they just do what they are given.

What incentives are they given to work harder and get more done? They might do that when first hired then the other get them in line. LOL

I work on site at a government site, and I see some of this. There seems to be a correlation between age and amount of shits they give towards their job. They young govies are motivated, hard working, and really trying to make a positive change. Where I work we have a forum where people are constantly posting ideas to save the taxpayer money. They actually care about the taxpayer, because they're taxpayers too.

Now, not all of the older members are lazy and have 'given up,' especially the ones that are division heads or higher. To me, one of the most unfortunate things I see in government is people being forced into positions they don't fit. They slam a round peg in a square hole because of pay brackets, levels, experience, etc. I constantly see non-technical people in technical roles -- and often that is not because of choice, it's because they've been placed there.

A lot of the govies I know are hard workers and want to do a great job and make this country a better place for everyone. Those of us in DC know that the traffic gets a lot lighter Friday, that's just not people being lazy. Many govies work a staggered work schedule where they work either 9 or 10 hour days then get every other or every Friday off. I've worked that schedule before and it's awesome. It seems that working more hours in one day with the promise of others off increases productivity.

That said, I've had tons of govies tell me they prefer to have contractors on staff rather than government employees. Why? Because you can say "I don't like him/her, get him/her out." to the contract lead and that person is gone. Getting rid of a government worker is not that easy. To me they need to change the way government folks are paid. Drive, work ethic, and knowledge should be rewarded more than time served. Make promotions rely less on years of experience and more on how the person has performed in their current role and if they're ready for a bigger challenge. I'm not saying experience isn't valuable, but I think it is inflated in the work place, especially when that is a primary factor.

All of my experience with govies are based on higher level organizations. I'm not sure how state/local employees are, but in my time with DOD, DEA, and DOS I've seen some hard workers.

All Feds are a bunch of deadbeats!

I'm a Fed. I have been for three years (was a contractor for 6 years before that). I like to think that the taxpayer gets their money's worth out of me. There are a lot of Feds out there like me. There is also a fair number of deadbeats, but that exists in the private sector as well.

Absolutely. Easy to get in the building, easy to kick out of the building. We've got two government employees that we'd love to get rid of, but as long as they have a pulse it's nearly impossible to do so. I can sneeze and blow a contractor out of the building and never think twice about it. Getting rid of government employed deadweight takes an act of Congress (not really, but much more involved).

Any insight on why that is? I ask just out of curiosity.

Last year I had to force someone out of my organization, which took a lot of documentation and forethought into how to properly build the case for putting them on a performance improvement plan, etc. But I found it workable. I'm in a private sector not-for-profit.

I'm just curious why it's so much harder in the government ranks.
