Expectations of Malcom Kelly

Alright, there has been a lot of conversation about the need to add depth as well as upgrade the WR position on this team.

My question is, what do we expect from Malcom Kelly this year?

With a full year off this year, his body should of had an opportunity to mend. He does possess great hands and the ability to be a big play-maker. However, as we all know, he can't stay on the field...wait get on the field.

Do we think he is an internal solution to our problem or don't even consider it. Trying to be hopeful here as you can tell...

If we sign a decent FA WR or keep Moss, he'll be released before the first regular season game.

Re: Expectations of Malcom Kelly

I think if Malcolm Kelly comes predominantly out of the slot and as the flanker in tight formations, he can be one of the better "between the numbers" receivers in the NFL. See: Kelly running through the Chargers' secondary unimpeded in 2009.

He just lacks the physical ability to beat good corners on the outside. See: Aqib Talib's total domination of him in 2009.

Basically, I think he can replace and improve on 70% of what we would get by retaining Santana Moss. We would lose versatility there: we'd need to have someone else play on the outside, but as I've said before in other threads: if Leonard Hankerson sees a 30% increase in snaps as a rookie because Moss is not back, who could possibly be against such a thing?

Re: Expectations of Malcom Kelly

He's one of the most loved guys at Redskins Park. He works hard and everyone is rooting for him. But he's hanging by a thread simply because he has to really prove he can stay healthy. If healthy, wouldn't surprise me if he even started. But any sign of less than 100% health, I could easily see him getting cut. In other words, I don't think there's any middle ground for him

Think he's got a better chance of staying healthy because they didn't try to manage him to play last year. But injury prone at age 23...tends not to become a mark of good health at age 29.

When I watched him play at Oklahoma I really wanted the Skins to get him. Needless to say, the outcome has been disappointing so far. I hope that he misses no training camp, is fully healthy, and tears it up like he can do.

I think he can be dark horse in the WR competition. I think Kyle and Mike see that too, that is why they didn't treat him like Devin Thomas. Thoughts?
My question is, what do we expect from Malcom Kelly this year?
If Moss is re-signed: around 34 catches for 472 yards

At a minimum I see Kelly providing an upgrade over the wasted targets(56) that went to our former 3rd and 4th WRs Joey Galloway and Roydell Williams in 2010.

56 targets x .61 (2009 catch %)= 34 catches x 13.9 ypc(2009)= 472 yards

Kelly could also have an expanded role ,along with the other young WRs, that provides the ability to feature a 4 wide package more often.

Without Moss, the expectations for Kelly are much more difficult b/c we don't know what role he or any of the other WRs would play and how that will effect defenses and coverages.

That and the Redskins moved Santana around so much that it would have been really obvious if a defender was following him around the field.

To check myself, I'm trying to think of a game where Moss started the game covered by one guy, beat him easily, and the defense had to make an adjustment to cover him differently in the second half. Tennessee, maybe? Cortland Finnegan really struggled at times last year, so maybe the Titans had to make that adjustment.

Re: Expectations of Malcom Kelly

I think Malcom has a chance to start this year or at least be the third receiver if he can stay healthy. I agree that he would be a major upgrade over the former three and four starting the season last year. The question is what will hankerson bring to the table and can he beat out austin as well as the other draftees.

I think there is a lot more to it than that.

Thomas was not a hard worker or a guy who gave the impression that he was dedicated to football as his profession. Basically, he had gone through high school and college and had excelled because of his physical superiority to most of his opponents. He did not enjoy that superiority in the NFL and would not work to improve his game. After a couple of years of that act, the coaching staff - - and without the GM who drafted him hanging around to "protect him" - - let him go. Please note that when people are talking about difference-making WRs, his name never comes up as a "sleeper".

Kelly is just the opposite. Kelly works to improve his game - - but he arrived in Redskins' Park with a leg injury and he has never been fully healthy. Coaches like his work ethic and his underlying skills but they are probably at the end of the line in terms of waiting for him to stay healthy enough to be on the field.

When the skins let Thomas go, there was probably a shrug of the shoulders and even some relief amongst the coaches. If they have to release Kelly, they will do it as a "business decision" but will probably have thoughts of "what if he had never had leg injuries...?"

Re: Expectations of Malcom Kelly

He can be part of a potent WR corp if healthy and Hankerson develops. I love he fact that he attended practices and meetings last year while on the IR as well as getting time running routes for John Beck all year in 2010.

He can be a very pleasant surprise.

It's definitely a make or break preseason for him.

Re: Expectations of Malcom Kelly

Ok if Kelly and Hankerson developed well they could be a dangerous duo of big bodied receivers. Kelly will only make it if he proves himself in the preseason. I think that is one of the reasons the redskins went after Hankerson to replace Kelly if proves to be a further disappointment.

Re: Expectations of Malcom Kelly

I agree with those who feel this year could be the last go round for Kelly if he's unable to stay healthy long enough to display the talent that earned him a 2nd round selection. By him not being released last year, Shanahan demonstrated he's not inclined to easily give up on a young player with talent.

Kelly may have been further along in his development now had they not had him on the 53 man roster his rookie year, giving him the time needed to fully recover from an injury he came to the team with. In the haste for him to play, his career has been set back.

Defenses have been trying to take Tana out of the game plan for years.
Kyle was smart enough to move him around to make it harder for defenses to key in on him and the emergence of AAA helped also.

Moss snaps/targets were about 60% X,Z and 40% slot.

Skins picked up 3 wr in the draft and one of them will surely make the team. Kelly is in deep shit unless he shows up big. His chance of making the team is 50/50 at best.

??? With a full year off???

Has he really done anything in the 3 yes he's been in the NFL? His first year he was injured, his second year I think he was injured and didn't see the field until like the last 2 or 3 games and even then I don't think they threw to him, and last year he was injured again.

My expectations are for the team to release him to make room for another vet who can come in along (hopefully) with Moss and the Rookies and turn this team around.

Re: Expectations of Malcom Kelly

I would agree with all that this could potentially be his last year with the redskins if he doesn't make the field. However, I am dead set that Shannanhan had to see something in him to place him on IR all year due to a hamstring injury. Let's just hope that this kid pans out to be a solid 2 or 3 receiver. With Moss, Kelly, Armstrong, and Hankerston we could have a decent WR corp...agreed unproven too. This guys have to play to their ability.

Doesn't make sense for Shanny to keep him around for a year on IR just to cut him in camp. I agree he's got plans for him in the rotation.

Re: Expectations of Malcom Kelly

Kelly better show up in the best shape of his life. Then he needs to earn a spot on the roster with great play on the field, over and over again. NOt a great series or a great game. He needs to play well from the beginning of camp to the end of preseason.
Then maybe he might make the team.
He has more to prove then any other receiver because he has history in the NFL and it is pretty weak and mostly a failure. He has to prove he belongs. Not just because he is tall. Show some heart. Get his nose bloody and keep on rolling instead of running to the trainer. Toughness.

SBXVII 07-18-2011 03:16 AM

Re: Expectations of Malcom Kelly

I'm just saying my expectations are pretty low considering he has not shown he can stay healthy for even the first game. I'd be happy if he simply stayed healthy but I just don't think he can.

But.....I will say that my expectations are high for any player who's been here 3 seasons and starting their 4 and has yet to develope/ produce anything on the field. Others have been let go who have produced a lot more namely D.Thomas.

If he's not firing on all cylinders from the start through the season then I see him getting let go. And I just don't think he can.

There are no expectaions. He's only made it this far cause of his size. If he was 5'9 he would've been long gone. I hope a miracle happens and he proves everyone wrong.... but even when he was on the field healthy, he couldn't get open. Probbaly time to cut the cord.

Re: Expectations of Malcom Kelly

Another way to think about this question would be to ask, which of the wr's can contribute on special teams? We've always assumed Kelly wouldn't, so that means he's really got to crack the top 3 to be assured of a spot. If he's healthy I think he makes it, but that's assuming no vets are brought in.

Austin was mentioned earlier, that guy looked good in the giants game last year. He made some catches in traffic. He's gonna make it harder on Kelly. WR will definitely be a position to watch in preseason.

Who ever created the ranking is way off. Kelly is way too high and at this early stage so is Hankerson. Yes Kelly is a big wild card, but I rank him lower until he shows something. Then move him up or down. Until then he belongs with the second tier of rookies.

My ranking of our WR (1-10):

8) Moss
7) Anthony Armstrong
7) Leonard Hankerson
5) Brandon Banks
4) Malcolm Kelly
3) Rest of Rookies

I don't believe it is smart to have expectations of malcolm kelly. We should assume he is not going to produce for us. He could very well surprise us and have a breakthrough year, but after battling so many injuries, and not having proven anything to us even when he is healthy enough to play, we shouldn't "expect" anything from him but we can still hope that he turns out to be a nice surprise.

They bring in the max allowed number of players to training camp EVERY year and usually there are precious few real "battles for a position".

I expect that several new starters will emerge this year - - at least I sure damned hope so - - but some of them will be Free Agent signings who will be handed their starting roles and others will be high draft picks.

Real honest "Roster Battles" are unlikely...
