Cardinals give up huge bounty to acquire Kolb

After a while, all of the “[URL="http://www.rotoworld.com/content/playerpages/player_main.aspx?sport=NFL&id=4151"]Kevin Kolb[/URL] trade is close” reports started to remind us of the reports that said the “labor deal is close.”
Thankfully, this deal didn’t take as long to close.
Adam Caplan of FOXSports.com reports Kolb is headed to Arizona in exchange for a second-round pick and 2009 Pro Bowl cornerback [URL="http://www.rotoworld.com/content/playerpages/player_main.aspx?sport=NFL&id=4715"]Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie[/URL].
That’s a ton to give up for an unproven quarterback, but the Cardinals were only getting started betting their future on Kolb. Caplan reports Kolb [URL="http://twitter.com/#%21/caplannfl/statuses/96653086440960001"]will sign a five-year, $63 million contract[/URL] with $20 million guaranteed.
(Kolb can head to Arizona now, but league rules indicate he can’t start practicing until the league year starts on August 4.)
The guaranteed money is less than Kolb was reportedly asking for, but still more than a quarterback with seven uneven career starts. Houston made a similar deal for [URL="http://www.rotoworld.com/content/playerpages/player_main.aspx?sport=NFL&id=16"]Matt Schaub[/URL] which worked out, although they didn’t give up a solid young starting cornerback in that deal.
What a gamble. The move will define the rest of the Ken Whisenhunt/Rod Graves era in Arizona.
They were absolutely desperate for a quarterback solution in the desert, and they acted like it.

Andy Reid is also gambling here a little; they're going w/Vick all the way. They will likely sign a vet backup but will he be good enough when (not if) Vick goes down? I just don't see Vick having another year like last year, I think he was at his best & might be good again, but not as much & he's always had trouble staying healthy.

We have to stop them (shegles) from signing VY. arizona got robbed overpayed for corn on the kolb what makes him better than Beck.

No way in hell Vick duplicates last year. He was playing out of his mind. Even if there's a slight drop off, however, he's still playing at Pro-Bowl level. He was just nuts last year.

I don't know, but I think the Skins can compete for the division next year. I really do.

And Kolb is being signed on pure potential. If Kolb is a bust, AZ would have lost a young starting CB and a 2nd round. At least with AH all we lost was money that was dumped off during the cap-less year.

At least Haynesworthless showed 2 promising years. Kolb hasn't shown remotely that.



I'm hoping for a double whammy in this trade. Kolb fails miserably, and Vick gets injured and the Eagles fall on their face with no legit backup. It's going to mean the end of 2 coaching jobs...lol

Very good point. We tend to focus on the size of the entire contract and not the guaranteed money.

I wonder how much more guaranteed bonus money Jenkins would have commanded above the $12.5 we gave Bowen?

I'm guessing the Eagles have a decent backup plan if they are willing to move Kolb. I know they got a nice haul in return for him, but there is no way Vick plays all 16 games. They must have a Vince Young or someone else in mind that can be a capable backup, because betting on Vick for a full season is crazy.

On the Cardinals end, they had to do something. They are in a very winnable division and there quarterback play was pretty bad last year. And while they had to give and good young player and a high pick to get him, this is the state that the NFL is in right now. Teams are going to overpay for any kind of quarterback that has any chance of being a solid starter.

Yes, but Haynesworth didn't cost us a 2nd rounder and a starting CB. Had there been no cap-less year, then we would be in trouble right now. But besides money, there hasn't been that big of a damage from the Haynesworth fiasco.

If Kolb fails, it would set back AZ for a year or two. It would wast a year of Larry Fitzgerald. You lose the guaranteed money, which affects your cap. And you lose a starting CB and a 2nd rounder. That is a lot of damage gambling on a guy that only started 7 games.

True, but we're still kinda comparing apples and oranges here. AH was a bad signing by any stretch, but the Skins didn't have a Lombardi in mind after they signed Haynesworth.

The Cards have the entire franchise riding on Kevin Kolb and he hasn't proven at this level that he's capable of delivering on such a promise. All it would take is a few non-playoff appearances for someone in AZ to be on the hot seat.

It's always about Haynesworth. Even though one case has NOTHING to do with the other. Bitter fans that just can't let go. Someone last night brought Jason Campbell out of nowhere. I'm afraid this will happen all season.

That's a straight robbery. A young, pro bowl corner and a second round pick for a guy who's started 7 games, and then they give him $20M in guarantees? Huge leap of faith by Arizona.

orton is the only starter available... don't like kolb, and hate that price. bad deal, and philly gets an early draft pick and a fairly cheap (no SB) CB?

eagles seem to have made out like bandits so far, but we'll see around week 10 who the real winner is. by then we'll know what kolb had to offer, and we'll probably have a look at who ever is backin up vick by then too. getting DRC is a great move, but not if you are giving up on the qb that was supposed to be your future. andy reid bet and won last year when dealing a qb, i have a feeling this one might bite him in the ass though

I know how this will pan out. Kolb will suck for 1.5 seasons with the Cards prompting them to release him at season's end. PHI signs him for nothing and he takes over for the then oft-injured and near-retired Vick. Ta-da...

I think all the hatred on this trade is a little baffling .. I live out here in AZ .. they sell out the stadium and the town is slowly becoming a football town .. you've got the BEST WR in the game, a great young RB from VT, a solid O and D line .. not to mention they drafted Peterson, probably the best player in the draft .. you've got to take a risk, so you go for a young talented QB ... DRC is a beast however he gets burned a shit load, kinda reminds me of D-Hall without all the ball skills .... AZ is going big and trying to make another playoff run, what's so wrong about that ?:confused:

what's wrong with that?

it makes philly better on the field (top 22), AND gives them a high pick next draft. if another team make the move it'd be just as bad.

Well, it is only a 2nd rounder, and if Kolb takes them to the playoffs in that weak division it'll be a late 2nd rounder at that. They're right. If Kolb becomes a franchise qb for AZ, nobody will care that the Eagles got a 2nd rounder and DRC.

I see what the Cardinals gave up for a relatively unproven guy like Kolb, and what the Seahawks gave up for an even more unproven guy like Whitehurst...and then I see what we gave up (and got back) for John Beck.

And it makes me wonder, did we totally rob the Ravens for Beck? Is that actually possible? I'm still having a hard time wrapping my head around that.

I'll be a happy man and move it to the brilliant column if JB can be a solid bridge to our francise guy for a couple of seasons.
