What should we be looking for/at in the 1st Pre-Season Game.

Good read & points. Besides no injuries what are things your looking for.

Kick back and relax. I don't want to see "too much progress" until the last game or two; solid run stoppage and pressure without blitzing, solid run blocking and pass protection. So yeah, OL and DL play...

Re: What should we be looking for/at in the 1st Pre-Season Game.

Well, Kellen Clemens has been in this offense for all of a week now, Beck isn't playing, and other two QBs are UDFA rookies. So my concern is how we handle Grossman's playing time. Because when he comes out and any of the other 3 guys goes in there, it's gonna be really ugly. So we either need to be content with ugly and not risk Grossman... or Grossman is going to have be in there for a while. Not sure I'm ok with either of those scenarios.

I think overall it will be a sloppy game just because it's preseason game 1 and the lack of preparation will be evident.

I like to see the 1st team defense look sharp for however short a time they're in there. I'd like to get a look at the ILB depth in particular. I'd also like to see the receiver rotation, and hopefully Hankerson will be some balls thrown his way.

A. No Injuries

B. Since I expect them to keep their schemes rather vanilla in the preseason, and especially in the first game, I want to see how they execute the basic schemes so far.

C. As listed in the article, individual performances. Namely the new starters, especially the big one on one battles, like T.Will against Harrison, etc.

D. No injuries, this time for emphasis. We are playing the Steelers, and even though it's preseason, it might not matter to a guy like James Harrison, etc.

Re: What should we be looking for/at in the 1st Pre-Season Game.

I want to see the first team get some reps together. This isn't your typical preseason, and it hasn't been your typical offseason. I really want our players to build some chemistry. I'd rather take a chance with injuries and let some chemistry build in a game environment than be overly caution. More concerned with the chemistry on offense than defense.

No injuries.

A bit more promise with the first team offense.

Signs of better 3 4 personnel.

New rules and their impact on the game.

We also should be looking forward to some redskins football! Can't wait. I will be in cancun but I will be the only loser trying to stream the game.

Woww what's this Skins101 site I'm bookmarkin this...

And they list Atogwe... very true he's Elite but he's with a new team/system abd his roles important and indeed hell be watched.
But my biggest concern in our secondary is Mr Josh Wilson...

And we need LaRon back. Were on the brink of preseason/season. God we need him.
People don't realize we have a really nasty secondary in place.
OJ / LaRon / Hall / Wilson / Buchanon / even Doughtys a nice backup S.

I'll be interested to see how teams approach this preseason vs ones in the past. These games are more important than they've ever been.

Rookies rookies rookies, they are the newest in the family...cant wait to see what they bring.

Want to see who steps out with the first team and how the new starters play (Beck, Riley, Chester, OJ, Montgomery)

Re: What should we be looking for/at in the 1st Pre-Season Game.

Not expecting or looking at much if Beck isn't playing. First game is a virtual waste as nobody that will actually play come 9/11 is going to see the field for more than a handful of plays. Maybe just see if our second and third stringers show some promise is what I will be looking for. Beck is the biggest question mark in peoples' minds and I guess he isn't playing.

I disagree...due to the lack of a significant offseason, it may be likely that teams with new additions to their offensive lines will try to establish cohesiveness.....I wouldn't mind seeing a full half of Oline starters....what I think will happen is a full quarter of the starters and a couple key shifts in Q2 to see how well they do with the starters as a viable competition...this may occur with the guards and the right tackle spot.

But the starting lines will have to play at least a full quarter together to get some solid tape on them not to mention these are new lines.

Frankly the line play is the most important to me....I am curious about QB play but only because I can't seem to look away from a train wreck.

Kerrigan will be interesting and so will RB and WR

While that may be true, I think most guys who realistically are locks to make the team (not just the starters), will pretty much get the night off after the 1st quarter. Since a lot of guys just got to practice on Thursday, I really expect the first game to be extra heavy on the undrafted free agents and 3rd stringers. Not that they don't play most of the 1st games ussually, but I really think they'll play more than usual.

I want to get out injury free, and really see the line on both sides have alot of push. I really like our direction this year with our youth.

Kerrigan I would think would be limited in the first game coming off of injury. RB and WR would be part of watching for depth which I mentioned was probably the only interesting thing to watch for in game one. I have never really been able to get a feel for the team in any of the first preseason games outside of QB competitions, but Beck isn't going to play. You are right about WR. Austin and Kelly better look sharp or they are just one or two weeks closer to elimination.

Re: What should we be looking for/at in the 1st Pre-Season Game.

we should be looking at the obvious things

- John Beck
-The rookies; specifically Kerrigan (supposedly he isn't doing too well at OLB), Jarvis Jenkins (whose been very impressive), Hankerson, Helu, Royster, Paul and Robinson
- The New additions; Hightower who fumbles a lot, josh wilson who should be an upgrade over carlos, Chester at guard, Cofield at NT (can he still play it, and well?)
- Also Perry Riley; is he or can he start for us at ILB?

GusFrerotte 08-08-2011 10:13 PM

Re: What should we be looking for/at in the 1st Pre-Season Game.

Matty brought up an article that said Beck was insisting he would play, which in itself would make the game interesting enough. You can't expect too much in the first game though.

Re: What should we be looking for/at in the 1st Pre-Season Game.

Based on the practice report I think people should prepare to see Markus White dominate late in the game. Apparently his pass rush moves are destroying the younger guys while the veterans on the other hand are having an easy time handling him due to the fact that they're much more patient.

Either way be prepared on Saturday morning to hear about how White is the second coming of Bruce Smith.

Or wait for DB's postgame play by play videos that hopefully won't be reported to the NFL by no snitches. Remember snitches get kitches.

Injury free and get some semblence of what we have this year. Going to be an interesting one for sure. I do applaud the team for laying low for the most part and finally getting that they need to build the right way. Flashy free agent signings do not cut it.

I've been hearing from different media outlets like blogs.washingtonpost.com/redskinsinsider and rotoworld.com that kerrigans been coming along slowly and Lou Spanos has been all over him yelling at him daily. plus him getting injured doesn't help him get any better on the field...its already tough enough for rookies this strike year, lets not make it any shorter.

Re: What should we be looking for/at in the 1st Pre-Season Game.

I think they will be treating this game like it's regular season. I can't think of anyone on the team that can be comfortable without giving their all out effort on Friday. Everyone seems like they have something to prove. This will be a good preseason game because the steelers always seem to get up for the redskins and regardless the steelers are the type of team that's too prideful to treat this like it's just another preseason game.

But I can't see any veterans on the redskins that will take the night off.

I know it's still early but I'm worried that Brandon banks doesn't make the team. One of the NFC east teams will surely sign him. And whether shanahan admits it or not. He's a difference maker.

Especially since the rosters got expanded with the new CBA, it's like keeping him for free! Even if all he is mostly good for is running back 2-3 kick/punt returns for TDs.

warriorzpath 08-09-2011 12:29 AM

Re: What should we be looking for/at in the 1st Pre-Season Game.

I hope after this game the redskins surprise the whole league with some of the pieces on the team. I want the defense to be playing young and hungry -- the way shanahan envisioned it when he picked up the new players. And I want the bookend o tackles to humble Harrison and the rest of his linebacking corps at least a little. I don't expect any of the qbs to be ready enough to be impressive, but I want the rookie wideouts and running backs to score at a couple of tds between them.

I want the veteran receivers, including Fred Davis, to show that they can carry the burden of being the main targets in the passing game as far as receptions and receiving yards are concerned.

If all of this happened, I'd be happy.

Points A and D are THE MOST IMPORTANT things to look for in this exhibition game and the next three exhibition games.

Recall that the Detroit Lions went 4-0 one Exhibition Season and then went 0-16 in the games that counted.

These games mean nothing - - unless someone gets hurt. Remember these guys have been practicing under coaching supervision for only about 2 weeks at best. Las Vegas ought to be offering an Over/Under bet on the number of hamstring pulls this weekend...

All this man-crush on Banks kills me. No team in all this time has bothered to put him on their team, even when he was on our practice squad last year. Zilch. Nobody. (including NFC East teams) That is even after the fact that freaking Devin "i'd rather be modeling than learning football" Thomas got picked up by not one, but two teams. (one being a NFC East team)

He's 150lbs. He doesn't contribute jack at the WR spot. At least Hester, Cribbs, and many other of the KR/PR contribute at some level at the WR spot.

Schneed10 08-09-2011 08:56 AM

Re: What should we be looking for/at in the 1st Pre-Season Game.

I don't expect the passing game to look like much of anything. But I want to see what we have at the RB spot. I want to see Hightower running decisively, even if his blockers aren't opening many holes. I want to see Helu shred the 3rd team defense, that will tell me he can contribute a bit during the season.

I want to see our defensive line hold up against the run. There's not a lot of scheme to learn there, it's a physical position and I want to see them hold the line and let the LBs flow to the ballcarrier.
