Couple of questions I'd like to hear people's responses to
If we have a top 5 defense next season, an average offense, and we miss the playoffs next year with an 8-8 record, would you want Gibbs gone?
If Smoot wants Champ Bailey money, would you retain him (knowing he's the emotional leader on defense)? Clearly, if Samuels doesn't agree to a restructuring, he's gone. What if he agrees to restructure? Do you still upgrade at the LT position? If the cap situation is such that you could either sign Dwight Freeney, or Mike Williams (mind you Ramseyfan, this isn't cap hell), which one would you sign? |
I can only answer 1 question,if Gibbs for any reason besides injury sticks Brunell in a game as starter and brunell lookes like he did this yr and Gibbs defends him, then its time for him to go and take Brunell with him
|
Question 1: Gibbs stays if we have that year, but an offensive coordinater will be necessary.
Question 2: He is not going to get that money anyway, so never mind that question. Question 3: Dwight Freeney is only good on turf due to his speed, so I take Mike Williams. |
Fist of all Dwight Freeney is good on any field and is probably one of the best players in the NFL right now. The colts aren't gonna let him go. Second we are in cap hell and don't have the money to sign a player like that. I think we should resign Smoot and Pierce and let Samuels walk and draft Alex Barron from Florida sate.
|
Gibbs gone? Never! there are 53 players and countless frontoffice clowns that will go first. I would soonerd fire my wife and child...
I would like Smoot back but not if he wants Bailey's contract. We simply can't give every player we sign the highest contract at his position in the league. the cap just won't allow it. Samuels needs to stay. He has to restructure though. LT is simply to hard a position to just replace. He has not performed up to potential but he is still somewhat young and he plays possibly the 2nd most crucuial position on a football team. He will be to hard to replace. And also the Redskins need to get some cohesion on the O-line. We can't throw a new 5 out there next season and expect to have a great line, it doesn't work that way. He must stay! I would go Mike Williams simply becasue big free agent splashes never work for us. Time to try a new way. However, if a great pass rusher was available with our top pick I might consider that over Mike Williams... |
No way. Gibbs needs at least 3 seasons.
I might criticize Gibbs' playcalling, but I'm not nuts....the guy has what it takes and then some. |

Either way, after 2 seasons no, I would not want Gibbs gone. In fact I'd be willing to give him the benefit of the doubt for his entire 5 years, that's how much trust I have in him. Some may call it blind faith, but I call it trusting and having faith in a coach that's a proven winner and a hall of famer to boot. If you can't trust someone with his credentials who can you trust? Question 2: If Smoot wants Bailey money I show him the door and dare him to find someone that would be willing to pay him that. Smoot is in the upper 1/3 of the league as far as corners go, but he's not worth top 5 money. I'd plug in Harris and move on. Question 3: If Samuels agrees to re-do his deal that's where my concerns about the LT spot end. Question 4: Williams. |

Whatever happens, Snyder better not fire that guy thats all I can say. I would say if we have a sh*tty offense again next season, I would like to see a real Offensive Coordinator in though. Question 2:It pains me to say this but no. Champ Bailey type money is just too much, we cant afford it. He might even be worth that money in the long run, but we just cant. I think we should (and apparently have) offer him somthing like Springs, if he likes it here as much as he claims, he'll say. Anything much higher, I think we have to let him walk. I'll be really really upset if he leaves though. Question 3: If he restrucutres, thats good enough for me. Question 4: Freeney far and away. He is proboly the best defensive end in the league outside of Julius Peppers and the guy is just amazing. We'll get to watch him in the playoffs and he is nasty. The type of pass rush he gets is awsome. Freeney has already proven he can play at the pro level, Williams hasent so that alone awnsers the question. |
Freeney will either be tagged with the franchise or transition tag so there is no way he is coming here for no compensation. And Freeney is an excellent pass rusher which means he is going to get a huge contract. He will probably get higher offers than Kearse got last year and the Redskins could not afford him either. The Redskins can not make a big free agency splash this offseason...at least I hope not.

From fat Lenny P:
"Indianapolis Colts defensive end Dwight Freeney now has more sacks (40) in the first three seasons of his career than any player in league history. That is significant because it means that Freeney, the club's first-round pick in the 2002 draft, has triggered a substantial "escalator" clause in his contract, one that boosts his base salary to $5 million for 2005. Looks like owner Jim Irsay, who has already opened his checkbook wide to retain Peyton Manning and Marvin Harrison, and who has vowed to keep tailback Edgerrin James off the free agent market, will have to dole out big bucks now to Freeney as well." According to this Freeney is under contract for 2005 so I don't know why we are even discussing him being available? |

Question 1: Hard to answer based on just that, but I'm 95% sure I'd want him here for at least another year. Because as far as I'm concerned 8-8 is a big step up from 5-11 or 6-10. As I've said all along - he has 3 years, and I think he can do it.
Question 2: As much as I hate to say it - no. If we're paying someone Champ Bailey money I want a lockdown corner. Smoot is one of, if not my favorite player, but he's not the best Cornerback in the land. He's solid, he's fast, he's cocky, he talks, and I love him. However, he needs to look at this years stats and realize that he gave up some big plays and isn't exactly a top tier CB. Now, if I had a choice between keeping Smoot for a reasonable price and say McCallister (I know he's not a FA, just for argument sake) I'd keep Smoot. I think he's that important, but we can't bust the bank for him. Question 3: If Samuels restructures keep him around. Another year with Bugel, and hopefully a majority of fmailliar faces on that line (1-2 changes) and they can get some chemistry together. Plus - LTs are expensive. Let's utilize what we have. I'll go as far to say sign him to a long contract if we can get him for fairly cheap. Hrm... That's hard. Freeney has established that he can tear up tackles without a whole lot of help from the Colts defense. He has also shown he can beat double teams. That being said, Mike Williams has a ton of talent and gives us a Chad Johnson type. All in all - I'd take Freeney. It's hypothetical, but I'd take him. He's already proven himself, and DEs are so tricky to draft. |

Go for both. |
Daseal,
We can't bust the bank to re-sign Smoot. Dan Snyder's bank is un-bustable. And if you were talking about that so-called salary cap, didn't anyone tell you, we don't have one. Plus, this "salary cap" as people call it, doesn't apply to players a franchise re-signs. |
Freeney AND Mike Williams! What are people smoking? You're talking almost $100 million between the two of them. I'm glad people identify with Daniel Steinbrenner, but did anyone see our defense? It isn't exactly in desperate need of help. So why sign a free agent who is going to be asking for a $60 million deal? That's like signing Randy Johnson when you've got A-Rod.
I'd like help on the d-line, but via the draft. |

That said, he doesn't want Champ money, he says he wants Shawn Springs money (6 years, $30 mil), they should give that to him. 3: No, I think Samuels can be a great Tackle. He's been hurt all season and was last season, too. I think if he agrees to restructure, you keep Samuels. 4: Dwight Freeney. Upside is a dangerous thing and Mike Williams has a lot of it, but I also think that a lot of you on this site overrate him. By most accounts he was the best WR available in last year's draft, but what about this year. He hasn't played in a year and that is enough to make me shy away. Also, Freeney is one of the best DE in the league, I would sign him in a heartbeat if he became available. |
Ramseyfan - The FO has been doing an amazing job with our cap thus far, and until I see us actually losing critical players to the cap, I'll assume they're still doing so.
Im pretty sure the Freeney or Mike Williams question was hypothetical, so I answered it accordingly. Our defense would greatly benefit from an increased pass rush (Freeney) and I feel lead to more turnovers. As of now we struggle getting pressure without blitzing. |
Stephen Davis wasn't enough?
|
Stephen Davis was far from critical. Look at him tear the league up!
|
An average offense would be quite a step up from this year wouldn't it? Gibbs stays
In spite of my username, I'm a Redskins fan first a Smoot fan second. If letting Smoot go is ultimately what's best for the team he has to go Tough call on Samuels. I guess my concerns about him would be eased if I didn't feel that he was vastly overpaid for average performance. I'm just glad he didn't make the Pro Bowl this year, maybe this will open his eyes to the fact that he's really regressed |

Even if Gibbs doesn't win another game for the next five years I would never want him gone. 2. No. I love Smoot but he doesn't deserve Champ money. Champ doesn't deserve Champ money. 3. Samuels has pissed me off the last few years with his play and cap number. Still I think we need him and if he restructures I'd be happy. The O-Line is vital to this offense and we need all the help we can get. 4. I would take Freeney. I'm not on the Mike Williams bandwagon. He may be great but I don't believe WRs make enough impact, especially in Gibbs offense. A rushing end would help a lot more. |
I think Samuels is in an ideal situation for us to have him restructure.
He's coming off two consecutive subpar seasons, his cap # is simply ridiculous and I'm sure even he understands that. He doesn't have much leverage, if he thinks someone else would be willing to take on his outrageous cap # the Skins' FO will gladly show him the door and dare him to find a taker. |
Gibbs needs to put some lustre on the tarnished rep. I don't buy into the tarnish, he deserves a season to get back up to speed, painful though it's been.
We need to have Samuels come down to earth, we need a better option on offense for Ramsey to throw to although a personal training camp may help an incredible amount. |
Question 1--no! too many factors.........was it our draft on offense, or did we miss a free agent that would made a difference......in other words...is this a VINNY/GM problem and NOT Gibbs....perhaps a new offensive coordinator to take pressure off of Joe........but I wouldn't get rid of Joe!!!!!!!!!
Question 2-I wouldn't compromise the Redskin's team cap room and overpay for Smoot...... Let Williams groom another guy............ Question 3-Colts won't let a GOOD defensive player go........the Colts have plenty of offense, but there defense is still a work in progress....... it would be a step back to let one of their few decent players on offense go!!!!!!!! |
