One of our coaches doesn't want Smoot back?

Per Lenny P., buried in the end of this article
Although there is at least one coach on the Washington staff who does not want Fred Smoot back in 2005, the Redskins may designate the standout cornerback a franchise player if a contract extension cannot be reached.
What do you guys make of this??

jamf 01-02-2005 12:35 AM

wow great find. i usually dont read anything by Lenny P anymore.

i cant image what the problem would be...

I'd like to know what is LP's basis for saying this. Did the coach tell him? Did he hear from another coach/player? Is he just guessing?

And when he says there is at least one it almost implies that there may be a few more coaches that don't want him back

Daseal 01-02-2005 07:46 AM

Doesn't LP have some connections into the skins organization (Cerrato) and gets pissy when Cerrato won't leak him enough info? I think I remember a rumor about that in the offseason.

azskinsfan2 01-02-2005 10:37 AM

I hope this one is just crap. If it was true wouldn't it rate more than a one-liner at the end of the story??? Smoot works his butt off and is one of the team leaders, why wouldn't a coach want him back?

As much as I hate pastabelly, the fatass did correctly forsee that Spurrier would fail, and Gibbs wouldn't see any success his first year. Not sure if it was his insight or a lucky guess.

I really wonder who these coaches could possibly be..Steve Jackson? Dewayne Walker? I thought everyone up top was impressed with Smoots rigor in the offseason, minicamps and training camps, and more so during the season - playing hurt and all.

Smoot is turning down Shawn Springs money - he turned down a 10 million signing bonus. Anyone remember what Bailey was offered....I think turned down a 9 yr 55 million deal that included a 14 million signing bonus?

I think its too early in the offseason (which hasn't technically begun for us) to worry about Smootie. I'm confident both Pierce and him will be back happy.

GoSkins! 01-02-2005 10:57 AM

He may be just guessing based on what Smoot has said to the media.

MTK 01-02-2005 11:51 AM

If Smoot is indeed seeking Bailey money then he can walk.

Springs type money is more than fair.

monk81 01-02-2005 01:42 PM

Remember "The Slob" doesn't like the Redskins maybe he's hoping to create ill ill between Smoot and the Skins......... You know what would be the ULTIMATE DISASTER....the Cowboys with their weak secondary and Woodsen ritiring..could be one of the suitors for Smoot....that would be a nightmare and reason to use the franchise tag....though Smoot would be unhappy with it!..... ........

MTK 01-02-2005 02:08 PM

Let's consider for a moment the possibility that Williams doesn't think Smoot is a critical part of the defense. Perhaps he thinks he can plug in someone like Harris and get similar production, and use that cap $$ towards another position like DE?

I'm just throwing that out there, I love Smoot as much as anyone, but as we've seen from this defense this year, it seems that no individual is more important than the unit as a whole.

monk81 01-02-2005 02:14 PM

In one of the other Smoot topics I wrote something similar Matty........ If Smoot is reasonible in his salary requests re-sign him afterall he already knows the system ........but if he wants ridiculous money....Williams can groom some-one else and we have more pressing needs DE, O line, WR etc..........

Dirtbag 01-02-2005 07:22 PM

LP has been wrong so many times in the past, he's lost any credibility with me. I take it as another weak attempt by him to rile up Skins fans.

As for Smoot, I hope he stays but, like with any player, we shouldn't overpay. I think it's pretty clear that Gibbs and the rest of the staff love his work ethic. He's a gamer, and plays through pain, and plays hard. One of the true "Redskins" that Gibbs always talks about. So, I think the front office will work hard to keep him.

offiss 01-02-2005 08:14 PM

I like Smooty but don't think he's an elite CB, William's system has a lot to do with his success as it will with whomever replaces him if he tries to break the bank, I think we have enough talent on the team right now to say we really won't mis a beat without him, signing him would give us a lot of depth if harris is retained.

JoeRedskin 01-02-2005 08:57 PM

I read they were offerring Smoot money that would put him in the top 10 of CB's in the league. To me that's more than fair for him. He plays well in Williams system but, talent-wise, I think he is an average to good CB. His committment and willingness to sacrifice his body make him a good (not great) CB. The team should not break the bank on him.

Plus, he does seem to get a LOT of penalties called on him.

I hope he stays 'cause he is such a great player for the fans. Besides, yelling "Smooooooooooooooooooot" at the games is so much damn fun.

Redskins8588 01-03-2005 12:06 AM

I hope that we can find away to retain Smoot this off-season, but I think that that Wilds guy today had a pretty good day for his first game and going against the likes of Min's passing attack!!

Also did anyone notice the one play where Noble pushed the one O-lineman almost right in to Culpepper? That was totally awsome to see him finaly just man handle someone.

Bozzy 01-03-2005 12:27 AM

Maybe this guy doesn't want Smoot back because he'll demand too much money...Hell we don't need Smoot, we have Greg Williams who can make a great player out of anybody. Look at Walt Harris. And that Wilds guy.

Thats the thing. I freaking love Fred Smoot, he was gonna be my next jesrey purchase, the whole 9 yards. However, if he does want too much money, I feel we can get the production out of the guys we have right now and maybe a low profile FA. I dont think we have to break the bank on someone or waste our pick on Rolle. I would hate to lose smoot, but I dont think its somthing that will kill our team personell wise. I do think his leadership would be missed.

Usually though, you ask for more than you expect right? You ask for Bailey money expecting to get Springs money instead of asking for Springs money and getting stuck with Jimoh money (for example)

Big C 01-03-2005 02:22 AM

what im really concerned about is if we lose smoot, and dont replace him, will Ade Jimoh be nickle back over Wilds?!!?!?!?!?!! if so, smoot is worth 100 million!!

Redskins8588 01-03-2005 02:27 AM

Just wondering, but what is so bad with Jimoh? I mean the guy plays for us pretty good, and if he didn't dont you think that Williams would have let him go by now? Also, I may be wrong, but isnt Jimoh only a 2nd year player? If so the guy is young, and he still has not got cut or sent to the practice squade(SP). So either the guy is able to play or Williams must like keeping him around to challange the other DB's when Jimoh is on the field...

Luxorreb 01-03-2005 03:50 AM

I honestly think Smoot will stay. Atleast a year. This season he's played his guts out more than ever before. As a fan I thank him wholeheartedly. I would also like to thank most of the underrated overachieving defense. Greg Williams makes Ray Rhodes look like a high school coach as he can plug almost anyone into his scheme. (Champ for Portis? I still think it was a good idea) Shawn Springs has played above and beyond all of my expectations. No name DL was great with whatever group this season. Pierce for running the D better than Lavar could've. Sean Taylor brutal rookie and nonstop every play. Matt Bowen's early efforts before his injury great blitzes. Smoot throwing his ailing shoulder into anything he could. Thanks to the defense for having pride in being a Redskin. Also special thanks to LC, Thrash, Ramsey, Betts, Cooley, Samuels, Thomas, Ray Brown and etc. All of those who gave it all. Money doesn't matter if you get a SB ring. Think about how much Joe Thiesmann made as a SB QB? 150,000?
As for Len the fatso he's making shzit up as always. Believe the bottom line. And if you've read his bs before you know he probably eats better than he reports.
Looking forward to 2k5 season. Gibbs is back and the players (cept for Gardner and a handful of others) are playing full on on every play. I appreciate that. Portis is a good back but Joe Washington tried much harder. Impressed with Betts today for his effort. GO SKINS!
