F Hurricanes...not the football team (but f them too)
So this weekend I had planned to go down to the Outer Banks NC in Rodanthe where my family has a spot. Ive only been able to make it down twice this year due to time and finances. I always go the weekend before Labor Day as a way to end the summer and gotten a couple people together as well to do a little fishing and partying. A couple day ago Florida was gettin a catogory 2 hurricane, this morning Wilmington North Carolina is getting a catogory 3 hurrincane late Friday night which is just a little south of where Ill be. Just a month ago I was camping and fishing in 100+ degree weather, should I continue my summer of extreme weather? Probably not, so F HURRICANES!!!!!!!

Re: F Hurricanes...not the football team (but f them too)
..........Actually your getting my Hurricane that has mercifully swung East so it will now effectively miss Florida (except for a brush on the Atlantic coast). Sorry about your weekend

Re: F Hurricanes...not the football team (but f them too)
I was looking forward to watching the Skins game Thursday night down there. Something about being down at the beach makes everything better, grilling seafood, margaritas, sun and sand and then Jon Beck going deep down field to quiet the hatters...it doesnt get much better than that

I've been to Rodanthe.
Camped at the KOA in a cabin with a very squeeky fan. |

If you own property down there you have a pass when they close down the island. I went down back in 1991 for hurrican BOB. It brushed the Outer Banks and was gone over night. I actually made CNN news as they followed us through a small store. They showed us getting tape, water, and then beer. They left the store so we put back the tape and water and just purchased the beer. We saw winds around 80 MPH but they did not do much damage.

Re: F Hurricanes...not the football team (but f them too)
I'll have to say if I had the chance to do that again I would pass. When we left for Nags Head the storm only had gust around 60mph but it pickup allot of power over the day. It went to a catigory 2 in just a couple of hours. I have pictures of us as the only car going into Nags Head and the long line of trafic leaving.

Latest Models (This will update everytime the site updates the image):
I still think it's going to continue to swing out to sea and miss the Eastern Seaboard, but then again, my name isn't Jim Cantore. Considering this time yesterday, it was going to hug the Florida Gulf Coast and now it's going to miss the Florida Atlantic Coast, I think it's feasible that Irene keeps swinging East. |
Re: F Hurricanes...not the football team (but f them too)
It has been steadily swinging Easterly. Original path was straight up the center of Florida. It has obviously swung several hundred miles East

Not such a big deal at the time. |
Re: F Hurricanes...not the football team (but f them too)
I hope it keeps turning east. Spoke with a friend yesterday who thought most likely that was gonna happen. Gonna wait tomorrow to see if its a go or not, being stuck down there in the rain aint a great time

I'm suppose to go down Friday afternoon but not sure what I'm going to do. It looks like its going to be a big storm so I would only go if it was 100% chance it will not hit OBX. As far as rain most of the time after one passes the skys are nice and clear. There will be some great waves from this storm. |
Re: F Hurricanes...not the football team (but f them too)
The Hurricanes here is Hockey bro.
Hurricane Tracker - weather.com There is a reason why it's named that. Welcome to hurricane alley. I would steer clear of OBX this weekend. Just saying. |

I have been in 4 major ones, I would NEVER knowingly/willingly go towards one. Nothing to fawk with and you be wasting emergency personal to have to come save your ass if you got in trouble. |
Re: F Hurricanes...not the football team (but f them too)
after the earthquake im mos def not efffing with that hurricane

Many times, they won't even allow people onto the islands (OBX) with a hurricane approaching. (unless you are a local perhaps) Class 2 is meh to us really. Even so, I sure as hell wouldn't be rolling up into OBX with any hurricane on the horizon. |

Re: F Hurricanes...not the football team (but f them too)
So Rodanthe has the KOA with the water slides and the go carts and all those things right? If that's the one back in the 80's we slept in my buddies van just about every weekend running the beach looking for waves. That's when they only had the water slide by the KOA. We got to know the guy who ran the water slide and would smoke a few and go sliding after hours. Those things are allot faster when you cut the water flow way back.
|
Re: F Hurricanes...not the football team (but f them too)
I dont remember any water slides at the KOA.
One thing that did stick out in my mind was all the toads everywhere. Especially at night, there were hundreds of them, and in the morning there would be dozens of dead ones in the roads. I remember some guy there would fly a kite at night with lights on it. Everyone would freak out thinking they were seeing a UFO. |

my aunt and uncle there now
On a positive note, usually the fishing is KICK ASS the day.....or some hours before the storm starts to kick things up..... |

You wouldn't want to be out there on a boat with those swells. Hell, even trying to secure that boat when you got back would be hell. Same reason all surfers all storm to the beach before the hurricane comes in. Now if you are talking about pier fishing, might be a different thing. |

This. Katrina came right through my town - I experienced her eye - and killed folks on my block. I was just lucky she didn't kill me, as a couple of large trees fell very near the house but not on it. Completely avoid hurricanes if you can. |
Re: F Hurricanes...not the football team (but f them too)
Guys I am flying back to Washington Dulles via Charlotte late Friday night (flight leaves Charlotte at around 10:30PM).
Based on preliminary weather forecasts I should be ok. Anyone flown around a hurricane? I assume there will be a ton of flight cancellations? |

I think he is talking about fishing before the winds and swells start to kick up. Its been said that the fish can feel the change in preasure and start to feed. Not sure if its true or not because I always catch fish. |
Re: F Hurricanes...not the football team (but f them too)
I can officially get behind this F Hurricanes thread now. Irene just borked my weekend travel plans. Tons of flights are getting canceled already including mine.

I'll second that. Earthquakes and hurricanes in one week? Geez mother nature, leave us alone for a little bit. |

Little Rock to see family. Didn't even get started, first flight out was delayed to the point where we were going to miss our connection out of Baltimore, and that was the only flight to Little Rock of the day. |

Re: F Hurricanes...not the football team (but f them too)
I moved my flight up so I am flying through Charlotte around 430PM. Hopfeully that is enough time.

I have to take my kid to BWI Saturday afternoon, already dreading the drive. I hope it doesn't start until late Saturday.

We are also dealing with a forest fire in the dismal swamp. When the wind switches to the north the smoke gets so bad I have to turn on my head lights and cannot go outside. If I look to the soth of my office I can see what looks like clouds but its actually smoke. The only good news about the hurricane is that it may put out the fire. I went out for a run kind of early last Saturday morning and it smelled like some someone was BBQ'ing. For a second I thought SBF had moved to Columbia but then I heard it was from a fire in VA. Mother Nature is a crazy bittch. |
