ESPN.com: Gibbs says 2nd NFL career to be short

http://sports.espn.go.com/rpm/news/story?id=1975954

"Hopefully, we'll be here forever. If we don't win a few more games next year, my time in football will be real short.'' - Gibbs

He then tempered that statement by saying, "I signed a five-year contract and what I'd like to do is get the Redskins back to being a consistent winner....I don't know what that will take. I don't know if it's five years or a little longer than that.''

Maybe this is why Gregg Williams didn't enter the NFL head coaching pool.

SmootSmack 01-26-2005 02:22 PM

I think he's just being his usual self-deprecating Joe Gibbs. I think he was speaking in relative terms, football to NASCAR. Maybe 5 years from now he'll be done with football but he can still be a NASCAR owner for another 10-20 years.

But yes, he damn well better win some more games next year

rdsknfn2003 01-26-2005 02:27 PM

Oh he is just wanting to play games with the press like he always does.

Paintrain 01-26-2005 02:30 PM

Ramseyfan I was thinking the same thing in regards to Williams.. I think if the Redskins are less than 9-7 next year then he gives the reins to Williams. If they are 9-7 or better he makes one Super Bowl run in '06 and then leaves.

TheMalcolmConnection 01-26-2005 02:34 PM

That's still sad to hear from Gibbs. I got a mixed message from that one.

Shane 01-26-2005 02:40 PM

I think that this is a typical comment coming from his modesty. To me, what he was saying was if things went very poorly say over the next couple of years that Dan Snyder would fire him, not that he would quit. But things would have to go extraordinarily poorly for that to happen, and they are only going to get better and better.

This was a very encouraging press conference to me, because he made it clear he is here to restore the organization and get everything on a winning track - and he says he would be willing to coach beyond 5 years if that is what it takes. I had hoped this was true, and it is heartening to see that this is what Coach Gibbs is willing to do.

hurrykaine 01-26-2005 03:01 PM

I have tremendous respect what he's done for this organization in the past (basically, all our glory is due to him), but I wouldn't be that unhappy to see him go & have Williams at the helm if his offense stinks up the joint again next year.

We have to build around our championship caliber Defense, and hire a more dynamic offensive staff.

I'm not sold on the Breauxs, Buges and Burns and Musgraves that will be running our offense next year.

Take Breaux's comment at the end of the season "we've got to let her fly more".....what the hell was he thinking during the season then? It's like they wasted an entire season to learn that lesson...of course, having Brunell start earlier in the season didn't help. If they're going to stick with their original philosophy to run run run to set up play action, then they better beef up that line and get a stud blocking TE, else I doubt the philosophy will work.

Take Buges for instance...gotta love his energy and enthusiasm on returning to DC, but I don't know how much he's got left in the tank as far as coaching goes. He keeps calling Samuels and Dockery really special players, when they've been rather ordinary. The Buges coached O-line gave up marginally fewer sacks than Kim Helton's great line last year. Buges used to be the best O-line coach, but now he's simply not in the same league with the Alex Gibbs and Grimms of the league.

Musgrave oversaw the 29th ranked offense (points-wise) in the league which led him to be fired from the Jags - why'd we get this guy? To develop Brunell more?

FRPLG 01-26-2005 03:39 PM

He meant short in comparison to the life time commitment to NASCAR. Notice he mentioned that leaving after next season(for whatever reason) would be "real" short. I doubt he'd classify 3 years as short and 2 years as "real" short. He is planning on being here for the duration of the contract I would bet. If there is one thing that everyone knows it's that Gibbs is an honest and loyal guy. I can't see him walking out before his contract is up unless he has some success before that. I would be surprised if he got canned too since apparently Synder has some serious man love going on for Gibbs.

rdsknfn2003 01-26-2005 03:41 PM

Well we all know how Snyder is. He loves to try and get rid of the coaches. But in all honesty I hope Gibbs stays for awhile.

MTK 01-26-2005 03:44 PM

"Hopefully, we'll be here forever. If we don't win a few more games next year, my time in football will be real short.''

He also said this with a smile and his trademark giggle, don't look too far in to it

MTK 01-26-2005 03:45 PM

From the Post:

"My time in football will be short. And if we don't win a few more games next year, it may be real short!" Gibbs said with a chuckle. "In any case, that will be just for a limited amount of time -- whatever God has in store there. But certainly the racing and everything here, we plan, Lord willing, to be here forever and continue to do this as a family."

Amazing how different it sounds when you leave out the fact he said it with a chuckle.

Seems like it'd be tough to simply change offensesive strategies in the middle of the year. Despite why would you change strategy when you have just implemented a new one and spent months getting your QBs to udnerstand it. They realized they had to make changes but tried to make what they had work. Now that they have time they can retool the approach to better use the talent they ahave.
I don't what games you were watching but their offensive line was far better this year than last. Don't simply look at sacks because that only takes into consideration one aspect. Both Brunell and Ramsey were able to hold the ball much longer this year than in the past and the crushing jail break sacks were basically eliminated. Work to be done for sure but they were definitly better. And also... you want Buges to come and say "well dockery and samuels play like little girls and we are seriously questioning their manhood"? It's called standing behind your guys and trying to keep thier confidence up. Plus anyways Samuels only gave up like one sack this year so using your sack comparison he had a great year.

I don't think Musgrave had much to do with Brunell in Jacksonville but I could be wrong. As far as why we got him though I have no clue. I don't read too much into coaching the Jags but considering their talent level I am somewhat concerned. I will withhold judgement on this until he can hsow u something. I'd love to know what happened in J'ville.

JWsleep 01-26-2005 03:52 PM

Part of this comment was aimed at his NASCAR team and sponsors. He's the main reason that team Gibbs is successful, so if he's not going to be there for years, why would sponsors stick with it? This is to reassure folks in that part of the Gibbs empire.

That being said, I'd be surprised if GIbbs goes more than 3 seasons at head coach. My main hope is that he'll get us turned around as an organization, and that he'll oversee things as president down the road. I'd be very psyched if he goes longer, but he's not young, and he doesn't do the coaching thing halfway. The main thing that Gibbs brings is his committment to excellence. I know that sounds like a cliche, but it's an attitude that makes an organization better. I believe that he'll get the offense turned around next year, but what really matters is changing the culture at redskins park. I think that has begun this year, and that's why 6-10 doesn't feel as bad as maybe it should.

As for GIbbs getting "canned" or Buges and co getting released, it aint gonna happen. Danny-boy is going to let Gibbs run things, that much I believe. If these are the guys Gibbs wants, that's the staff. I'd love to see a young o-coordiantor type on the staff to groom for the long-term, but that may be down the road (season 3?).

TheMalcolmConnection 01-26-2005 03:57 PM

Ahhhh.. I didn't read the chuckle part.

rdsknfn2003 01-26-2005 04:02 PM

""Part of this comment was aimed at his NASCAR team and sponsors. He's the main reason that team Gibbs is successful, so if he's not going to be there for years, why would sponsors stick with it? This is to reassure folks in that part of the Gibbs empire.""

Well if thats the case then why did he get another car in nascar and driver?

JWsleep 01-26-2005 04:14 PM

He hasn't given up his NASCAR team, and sponsors (especially with the new FedEx car) want assurances that he's still involved. Lots of money is involved, and no doubt the sponsors largely signed on because of Gibbs. They may be asking themselves "Is Gibbs really invovled here?" He responds that his stay in football will be short. Maybe he means less than 3 years, but my feeling is that it'll be three-five, and back to NASCAR--it's all in what 'short' means, I guess... His son runs the NASCAR operation day-to-day, so I read these comments as more of a genarl committment to stay involved, not an imminent return to day-to-day control in North Carolina. Our best hope for Gibbs staying on at redskin park is the success of his son with the NASCAR team. If things are going smoothly there, he can devote all his focus to the skins with no worries. So we ALL need to root for the three Gibbs drivers this year!

hurrykaine 01-26-2005 04:14 PM

"you want Buges to come and say "well dockery and samuels play like little girls and we are seriously questioning their manhood"?"

Yes, thats exactly what I want. It's what Parcells would've done..can't remember the player it was directed to, but Parcells once said in a post-game interview .."yes, she had a rough day today".

Call Samuels out when Alex Brown beats him clean on a bull rush! Call Docile Dockery out when he's being manhandled by Cory Simon.

hurrykaine 01-26-2005 04:17 PM

"Don't simply look at sacks because that only takes into consideration one aspect."

How about lower yards per carry from our RBs than last year. By no means am I advocating a return to the Spurrier-Helton philosophy, but it is indicative of big problems on the O-line.

bedlamVR 01-26-2005 04:25 PM

Musgrave has had success developing QBs everywhere he has been. He isn't being brought in, in the OC role but to help develop Ramsey and bring some fresh meat to the table.

Buges probably isn't at the Alex "Chop" Gibbs or Russ Grimm calibre but he wasnt gifted the best of luck loosing Jansen turmoil in the line up for the fist half of the season and what is he to say about Dockery and Samuels they suck, they are the worst players in the world a waste of skin? That would be a great way to build their confidence team chemistry and belief in the coaches system.

I think the best thing in the article is a slight insight into the Gibbs-Snyder partnership and that fact they are still getting along well. One particular part where Gibbs is saying how the press starts to hound him when things go wrong he tells Snyder just said "don't worry about it they'll just blame me anyway"

rdsknfn2003 01-26-2005 05:08 PM

there is the site for that Gibbs speach

Daseal 01-26-2005 11:14 PM

Does that giggle creep anyone else out?

I for one don't see him staying the 5 years. Especially if things on the offensive side of the ball don't get working in 1-2 more years.

bedlamVR 01-27-2005 01:54 AM

Parcells said that of Glen after he first drafted him, but the Gibbs and Parcells coaching approach are polar opposites and that extends to the coaching staff . Parcells will rip into a player in public where as Bugel will do so more in private. Its different coaching approches thats all.

BrudLee 01-27-2005 09:04 AM

Keep in mind that his last stint in the NFL lasted 12 years. By that measure, an eight year hitch would be short.

I have no doubt Coach Gibbs will do what ever is necessary to right the ship, and then pass the torch to a worthy successor. His dedication is to this franchise, not his legacy, and it will show in his results.

sportscurmudgeon 01-27-2005 11:42 AM

A couple of notes here:

1. Since Danny Boy still owns the team - unless I mssed a memo recently - what makes you think Joe Gibbs will name the next coach? All of a sudden, Danny will cede that authority to him even when Gibbs is gone? I have my doubts...

2. Everyone here seems to be 100% certain that Gregg Williams would be a great successor to Gibbs. Maybe he will - but maybe not. Williams was mediocre in Buffalo at best. He left and the team got a lot better in one season. Hmmm...

3. The Joe Gibbs list of assistant coaches who have gone on to glory as head coaches eslewhere is pretty short - maybe even a blank piece of paper? Joe Bugel stunk out the joint in Arizona and Oakland. Jim Hanifan? Cam Cameron back in college? Richie Pettibon? So how does this guarantee glory and success for the Skins under Gregg Williams?

4. The OL this year was not good. A lot of that had to do with Jansen's injury, but they were not good. You can put lipstick on a pig and pretend it's beautiful, but it's still a pig. The OL wasn't very good this year.

Dockery improved over last year but he still has a LONG way to go to be above average.

Raymer is done.

Brown is a back-up at best.

Remember Vaughn Parker was going to be the answer and then he could not get himself into playing shape by the end of the year.

Samuels improved but is still not an elite OT.

Randy Thomas was the stellar performer on the OL; Sameuls was adequate and everyone else was sub-standard.

Bugel had only one year with these guys so I'll give him a pass for this year. But next year, there needs to be some significant improvments here.

Fine points, but not to nitpick except Cam Cameron is post-Gibbs

Nope, but call them out when they make mistakes and say they have ways to go - don't blindly praise them for the sake of encouragement.

I discovered that Parcells quote - asked about Terry Glenns performance in a game once, Parcells said, "yes, she had a rough day today". What did it do to Terry Glenns confidence and the team chemistry - Glenn went on to set the rookie record for catches that year!

Ok, not everyone can coach "tough love" style, and not every player reacts to it well, but calling Samuels and Dockery "special" isn't ok either, IMHO. Buges is known for chewing out linemen for blown protections/blocks...it just seems that he's gone a bit soft in this stint. Now, calling Randy Thomas something special is fine with me.

DCopper04 01-27-2005 04:00 PM

I do think that if there are not immediate improvements in the offense next season, there needs to be some strong consideration as to whether Gibbs should coach this team. Our horrid offensive performance this season cost us a playoff spot in an NFC that was as weak as it has been in recent memory. With all the talent we have on this team there is no reason why we could not muster a meager 8 wins to squeak into the playoffs. I place the vast majority of the blame on the coaching staff. I understand that they were looking to duplicate the success they had in their first stint, but I would think that they would be more apt to adjust than they were this season. If Gibbs can't adjust for next season, then I think he should hand the reins to Williams.

skinsguy 01-27-2005 06:59 PM

I believe we need to take this ESPN news piece with a grain of salt! Certainly if we wind up not having a great season next year...at least if we finish less than 8-8 this coming season, I would say Gibbs might have bit off more than he can chew....

Instead of getting back into a pointless debate on whether Gibbs still has it or not, I'm going to back him and have faith that he'll know what to do to turn this team into a winning team again.

Gmanc711 01-27-2005 07:00 PM

I'm not looking too far into it. When he signed the 5 year contract, I honestly expected three out of him, and thats what I still expect. If he left after next season, I would be extreemley dissapointed. I aslo hope we keep everything "in the family" and Williams is our next coach.

skinsguy 01-27-2005 07:02 PM

Yep...I agree and again lets give him at least three years....
We're all expecting big things next season and I believe we'll see a big difference.

TheMalcolmConnection 01-27-2005 08:22 PM

I know it seems like its so far away, but I just can't imagine what would happen and WILL happen when we make it back to the Big Game. I propose all Warpathers either A) have an enormous party in DC or B) everyone go to the Super Bowl that can afford it.

Gmanc711 01-27-2005 08:25 PM
I know it seems like its so far away, but I just can't imagine what would happen and WILL happen when we make it back to the Big Game. I propose all Warpathers either A) have an enormous party in DC or B) everyone go to the Super Bowl that can afford it.
I dont know if everyone combined could afford Superbowl tickets LOL. Seriously though, they are upwards of 2-3 grand. If we make it to the Championship game one year, I'll defintley hit that up, its expensive, but affordable. I cant even begin to think of how I would be when we get to that type of a game.

skinsguy 01-28-2005 12:16 AM

One thing for sure.....if the Skins make it to the big game (and of course win....) I'm recording it and putting it on dvd!....locking it up in a safe place! Well...after I watch it a couple hundred thousand times!

MTK 01-28-2005 08:34 AM

It's hilarious how this quote has been blown so out of proportion by the media. Hilarious but not surprising.

skinsguy 01-28-2005 10:04 AM

In it way, it exposes just how ignorant the media can be. I haven't figured out yet why they have such a negative agenda toward Gibbs. Maybe Gibbs is too clean cut of a guy??

Bozzy 01-28-2005 10:48 AM

He won't retire before his contract is up nor will he be fired. I think he'll be here for the full 5 years, then maybe sign a 1 or 2 year extension, or give the job the Gregg Williams.

BDBohnzie 01-28-2005 11:16 AM

i was listening to the Sports Reporters on 980 the day it happened (those guys crack me up...helps me get thru my commute from Falls Church to Gaithersburg), and Tony Kornheiser was saying how he took it to mean that Gibbs wouldn't be around long...when he consulted Liz Clarke, WP reporter that was at the conference, she told him not to look into it, as it was said tongue in cheek.

the media tries to create controversy everywhere, and this is one more instance. you could clearly tell from the replay that he was trying to lighten the mood...

MTK 01-28-2005 11:44 AM

The media would LOVE it if Gibbs couldn't turn things around and retired early. The media loves to see Danny boy fall flat on his face and this would be no different.

skinsguy 01-28-2005 05:13 PM

I would absolutely love it if what Bozzy said comes to pass! Assuming that Gibbs can work his magic once more, I would not mind him being here past the 5 year contract. Isn't Gibbs also President of player operations or something like that? I wonder when he retires from coaching, would he give that up as well? It would be nice for him to be a part of the decision making after he's done....very smart guy!
