Who is it?
From the Post article:
"Having worked into the wee hours trying to re-sign one of his Washington Redskins veterans, Joe Gibbs didn't make it to North Carolina until 2 a.m. on Tuesday, which gave him just enough time to grab a few hours' sleep and a shower before his 9:30 a.m. news briefing to tout his race teams' prospects for the upcoming NASCAR season." So who is the Redskins veteran that Gibbs is trying to resign? My guess is Samuels. I have a feeling Smooty is gone, plus the Skins are kind of handcuffed until they finalize Samuels' situation. So I'm guessing Samuels is the priority right now in the front office. Any thoughts? |
I'd say Smoot honestly...without having much information it seems most of the other negotiations have been going pretty smoothly and might not require staying up until the wee hours of the morning. The only reason to do that is to beat a deadline or strike while the iron is hot. Iron is hot = making progress where there wasn't much before. Of course I am probably just hoping...
|
Well then who lives in NC. Thats the real Q? here and I am not to sure about that. but if anyone knew that then you have yr answer
|
what? he went to NC for nascar. he flew in from somewhere else, so ppl that live in NC have nothing to do with it...
|
It's Samuels, I forget where I saw it but I'm 99% sure it's in reference to Samuels. I'll try to dig up a link.
|
this is where one of his drivers live in NC. Residence: Mooresville, N.C.
|
That's Gibbs for you, going the extra mile to resign his vets.

Yeah I can't find the link either but I think it was a chat with Mort or Lenny on ESPN and he said Samuels |

yeah that's it, it was a chat with Lenny P |
Thats a good thing we do need to keep him. Now the next step is to keep Smoot. I do hope THE GOD GIBBS resigns him. It would be a bigg loss if we lose him. even though we do have Springs.
|
Part of my unflappable football instincts tell me that Smoot will be back. (I hope)

Could possibly be Smoot. Dunno about going smoothly, though - In Pastabelly's chat on ESPN, he said Snyder met with Samuels' agent and there was no progress whatsoever on lowering his cap number. |
I'm thinking Smoot is as good as gone.
I think we made a choice between Pierce and Smoot and Pierce won out. |
If I had to make that decision I don't know who I would choose. I know that Pierce is the better performer, but Smoot has the intangibles. I dunno. I would hope that someway, somehow we could sign them both.

Do we have to think about the cap. What kind of situation are we in with that? How much can we spend or really allow to spend? I would like to keep him And I am sure you do to . But the cap is what might hurt us here this year or in the next few years.
|
Watch it turn out to be someone like Ethan Albright. LOL
not that I don't want to keep EA |
thats just wrong

Ya I was thinking that too. Well maybe the thinking is - if Samuels doesn't restrucutre then he's gone - so in that light it could be viewed as a "re-signing". |

Offensive lineman Ben Nowland, offensive lineman-tight end Dan Goodspeed, defensive back Roosevelt Williams and linebacker Joe Tuipala were officially added to the roster this week. |

I don't think those are Gibbs words so much as they are the Washington Post's. And I ain't no English major but wouldn't renegotiating be the process of getting the new contract done whereas re-signing is actually putting pen to paper? |
the guys on fox radio really gave him a lot of shit over all this.i think samuels is gone,i think they'll keep smoot.
|
I'd take that... Samuels have have been above average, but Smoot is a team leader AND above average.:)
|
i haven't been able to read all the posts lately but does anyone think he might have been referring to players more under the radar (not to mention players who will more cap-friendly) like peirce, marshall, or thrash? Samuels will either renegotiate or will be getting the door hitting him on the ass on the way out. plus how much longer is ramsey signed until?
|
like i have said earlier, gibbs has stated that keeping samuels is a must, i read that in the daily press. he will be here next year i am sure
|
It's gotta be Samuels. Although re-signing Smoot is a priority, Smoot is the least likely of the Skins' big free agents to stick around. The reason is because Gibbs and Snyder both know that we can get something good in return for Smoot should he choose to not re-sign here. We will franchise him and deal him for high draft choice(s) or possibly some veterans that can come in and make an immediate impact. Although Samuels and Pierce could potentially be traded as well, they would not garner the interest that Smoot would on the trade market. Therefore, if there is one person who is not coming back to the Skins next year, it's Smoot.
I desperately want Smoot to stick around, but I won't be overly worried should he leave. Gibbs, Williams and Snyder know the importance of having good corners in this defensive system, so if Smoot leaves, I am confident that Snyder will whip out the checkbook and find someone comparable to replace him. I have loved the offseason since Snyder took over. Danny Boy always seems to keep us on our toes, and you never quite know what he's gonna do. Unfortunately, for the past decade, the offseason has been by far the most exciting time to be a Skins fan. Let's just hope that some of this offseason excitement turns into Ws next year. |
I'm saying Smoot. I have a feeling that the Pierce/Samuels/Wynn renegotiations will go fairly smoothly. I think he realizes they need to sign Smoot.

Oh how true that statement is. Yup I would love to see smoot stay. But now that I think about it If he goes somewhere. This is just a thought but what if we trade Smoot to the vicks for Moss.. They do need dfence overthere. They might be just desprit enough to do the trade it could cost us a sec round in the draft. but who knows. |
Smoot and a 2nd rounder (of which we don't have right now?) The Vikes would laugh at that deal. Perhaps the most explosive offensive player when healthy for an above average corner and a 2nd rounder? Doubt that. They'd want our #9 for sure. If we lose Smoot, I'd like to get at least a 2nd for him, and use our first on a CB. Rolle or the guy from Auburn!
|
Daseal, you are 100% on the money. The guy to get if we draft a corner is without question Carlos Rogers.
|
I am confident that Snyder will whip out the checkbook and find someone comparable to replace him.
Why would Snyder whip out the checkbook for a veteran or someone comparable to replace him instead of just resigning Smoot? Think about it any top CB that is an UFA will want just as much or more than what Smoot wants. You think that Charles Woodson, S. Rolle, A. Dyson, or any of the Miami Dolphins CB's will want less than what Smoot is asking? If any thing Smoot is probably the cheaper one out of the group. To me it would make no sence to let Smoot go and then sign someone else for about the same price or higher. |
If Smoot leaves, in all honesty I dont want to bring in a big name guy. I would say draft a guy, or maybe we already have his replacement on our team? if we have to dish out a ton of cash, I would rather just do it on Smoot himself.
|
I really don't think we'll look to sign a big name CB if Smoot leaves. I think the plan will be to plug in Harris and continue to develop the youngsters behind him, and probably look to pick up a CB via the draft in the later rounds.
|
Garnell Wilds showed some promise. I mean, if Williams trusts him 1 on 1 vs Moss, he must have plenty of talent!
|
Unlike most years, this offseason there are several high-quality free agent corners on the market. If Smoot leaves, and we don't draft a corner with a high pick, I don't see how the Skins can pass up signing one of those guys. In the event Smoot decides not to re-sign, we will franchise him and try to get a draft pick in return for him. The likelihood of getting a great deal in return for Smoot is low, considering the aforementioned number of quality corners that will be looking for new teams. The best we will get will be a mid-range first rounder, and assuming that's what we get, we SHOULD spend one of our first round selections on a corner. If we don't I think it is imperative that we pick up a solid corner via free agency.
As for the amount we would have to pay a free agent relative to the amount we would have to pay Smoot, you may be right Redskins8588, the numbers might not be much different. But one glaring trend that has remained consistent since free agency began has been the fact that free agents usually look to score fat signing bonuses from their new teams. Players that are looking to re-sign with a team are not as inclined to seek the same type of signing bonus. Given Snyder's track record with shelling out bonuses, I have to like our chances of attracting one of the top free agent corners. Once again, I think the best option is to keep Smoot. If that doesn't happen, we should trade him for a pick and select a corner in the top 20. If that fails, then I would expect another Springs-like player in Washington next year. |
