Re: Captain Abandons Ship As Concordia Sinks
That captain is royally screwed.
He was so far off course it was ridiculous. |
Re: Captain Abandons Ship As Concordia Sinks
I guess he apparently overrode the computer system so he could sail closer to some island or something like that. Either way, yeah he's screwed
|
Re: Captain Abandons Ship As Concordia Sinks
Just an unbelievable story all around.
What a pathetic display by this so called captain. |
Re: Captain Abandons Ship As Concordia Sinks
I just do not get how these things happen. I have decent electronics on my boat and if I was crusing something that big I'd have three warnings that would go off. The first is on the radar where I can set an alarm to go off if anything gets within a set distance. The the depth finder has a warning alarm if I'm heading into water of a certain depth which I can choose when the alarm goes off. Then your GPS chart plotter gives your location, locaction of land, and it gives depths and warnings about hazards in and around you. If you have ever watched the show Whale Wars remember the alarms going off as they get closer to the other ships. Thats what these captains would hear. You cannot ignor them. Well, maybe you can.LOL

Re: Captain Abandons Ship As Concordia Sinks
It's disgraceful. I mean I get that he was probably terrified and realized that getting back on board that ship probably means he's likely walking into death...but that's unfortunately the risk and responsibility you take as captain of a ship...and the risk you take when you don't follow the proper route

He knows the ship. He knows the protocols for this situation. He has the ability to get back on the boat and help save these people- women and children included... And he just sits on his hands and watches the mayhem that ensues from a disaster that he's responsible for. What a POS. |
Re: Captain Abandons Ship As Concordia Sinks
Theres a video on CNN that shows the ships path and exactly what happened.
I think a lot of people think it hit a rock and stopped and sank right near where it was. According to the video the rock was hit a ways up the coast. The ship continued on to the the little town and turned around 180 degrees as if to try to make it into the tiny port area. But instead it sank/listed so badly that it stopped at the harbor entrance. The captain did not call for help (to the Coast guard or anyone else) after the collision. I’m guessing he did not think the damage was so bad and could make it to port. But how the hell do you not know a giant boulder is stuck up your ass? I think he had a bit of a god complex going and tried to minimize the the whole situation by making it to port instead of sinking in deeper water. Immediately after he struck the rock he should have started deploying lifeboats. He screwed up in a lot of different ways. |
Re: Captain Abandons Ship As Concordia Sinks
He took a taxi out of there instead of getting back on the ship?? If that's true...

Apparently he changed the course so he could cruise past the shore and honk the horn for a retired officer that lived on the water there, and also to impress the family of one of his crew. So it's because of showboating this happens... And then he hails a taxi while there are still passengers missing and in the water. This is one of the biggest displays of cowardice and stupidity I can ever remember seeing in my life. |

Even my $500 GPS shows a map and the depth of the water around me and shows my location. So I can look at the depth of the water miles in front of me. |

What a little bitch. And the story as read here says that it was done as a favor to the head waiter who had family staying on the island it passed by. The captain is gonna be paying for this disaster for the rest of his life. |

Yeah I mean I'm sure they have state of the art equipment on those ships. The fact that that rock ripped a 160 foot hole in the boat and the captain waited an hour to even report it?? WTF?? |
Wait so that damn captain didn't even get back on board even after telling the coast guard he would??

I made it because I know some guys here view the forum on very small electronic gizmos and in the past when I have posted large pictures and have used large text they get all bent out of shape, which makes me laugh because I have a expensive gaming PC with a couple large monitors. Its not my fault they choose to view the internet on a postage stamp sized Poindexter unit. :cheeky-sm |
