Where Do You Bank?

I'm just glad that my father was a stone-cold killer in the military, giving me the chance to bank with USAA. i highly recommend USAA to anyone who is eligible. i saved a pantload on car insurance, and at the time i joined, i was getting cash rewards on my debit/check card. cash rewards on a debit card was insane to me. i've been a member for about a year now, and i have never needed to go to a physical location to take care of any of my banking needs. i can use any atm because they refund all fees. i can deposit checks with a camera. everything is free, no fees at all. they just gave me a $5 thank you into my credit card account for no apparent reason. i love my bank.

i don't know where i would bank otherwise.

I also love USAA. Because everytime I have one of their customers shopping for cheaper insurance I know I can save them several hundred under USAA. They are not cheap for insurance in our area. You own stock in USAA?

i just feel sorry for anyone who has to pay a single fee to do their banking, for anyone who has to worry about which atm they use, so on and so forth. i'm also curious to know where many people choose to do their banking. i use NFCU for the big stuff, but i use USAA for my everyday needs.

Re: Where Do You Bank?

I just switched to Navy Federal from Wells Fargo, and Navy Fed. isn't bad. I've got several annoyances though, I have "the red card" as it's known at Costco and it's a pain in the ass having it as my main banking account because Costco doesn't take the check card from Navy Federal, so I have to go to an ATM and withdraw cash in advance before I go shopping at Costco. And I don't want to go through the hassle of switching banks again so I'm probably going to stick with Navy Federal and see if they can't get their issues with Costco worked out. I also don't like how few branches they have, and before I got direct deposit it used to take them 2-3 days to get my check to show up in my account. But other than all that it's not bad.

USAA here as well. I have everything through USAA. Car insurance, renters insurance, savings, checkings, investments, credit card, etc. I couldn't recommend it more.

USAA's insurance may not be the cheapest, but they have competitive prices and most importantly, the absolute best customer service you could ever ask for from a company. I have no worried that they will try to **** me if I have an emergency like many of those discount insurances.

Checking account and mortgage at a local bank with friendly rates. Savings account and car note at a local credit union.

Re: Where Do You Bank?

My dad is with Navy Federal so I have an account under him and I also use Citibank. I absolutely hate Citibank, my APR for the credit card I have (granted its $22 overdrawn right now) is sky high, almost 17%, even though I've NEVER made a late payment. Mind you, I've been a Citicards holder since 2007. My APR was 12% and when the economy took a dive everyone's APR shot up.

I don't really have a problem with Citibank's checking/saving other than because I keep less than some ridiculous amount of money in my checking (I think its like $1000 minimum), I pay like a $15 a month service fee. Only if you have the $1000+ is that charge waived.

I would but the account is literally, under my dad's so he'd see all the purchases I make, deposits, withdrawls, etc. Not that I'm doing anything illegal. lol

There is no such thing. USAA is a non-profit outfit. Members are kind of like share-holders.

Re: Where Do You Bank?

Also USAA's insurance is often more expensive because it is better. The term sheet may match but they are simply the best to deal with by a mile. They don't have to squeeze every penny out of their customers so they focus on not being dipsh*ts like all the other insurers who have a responsibility to maximize shareholder value.

Plus he would find out about your internet meme addiction...oh wait, that's just in the Pics to Share thread. :)

I bank with Capital One but I also have a SECU savings account (I got my car loan through them). I've thought about switching to SECU, but haven't felt like doing so. If Cap One starts charging me outrageous fees, I would do it.

My wife and I used to have Cap One cards separately from our bank account and we got rid of them when they started to charge the annual fee.

I don't know if they are a non-profit but I do know they are a Mutual Insurance Company which means they are owned by the policy holders. At one time USAA was very restrictive on who they would write policies for but over the years have opened their doors to insuring people who have not even served in the military. While they are a very good insurance company by opening the door to more customers it has also driven up their losses and rates. At one time I would not even waste my time quoting a USAA customer because I could not touch their rates. Over the past 5 yrs I have been taking USAA customers saving them from between $200 up to $700 a year on auto ins. In our area if your not a current USAA customer they will not even write you a homeowners policy because of how close we are to the coast.

This.

I'm currenly with Wells Fargo, which was Wachovia, which was First Union, which was Signet Bank, which was Suburban Trust I think. I have the kids' savings accounts in an ING Direct account.

While I was in college, I moved from Signet to M&T Bank (which was AllFirst, who had bought First National Bank of MD, which is there I had actually moved my money to) because they had branches all over Salisbury, MD where I went to school. When allFirst was bought by M&T, I switched back to Wachovia for some reason that I can't remember.

Wells Fargo is ok, although they've screwed up a few checks, including short changing my daughters' day care provider $50 because my 7 looked like a 2 and they didn't compare it to the written amount. There are only 2 branches in Frederick, and they are both a pain to get to, so I'll be switching to PNC here shortly, as there are 2 branches and an ATM at Wawa with 2 minutes of the house. I'd bank with SECU, but the nearest branch is in Rockville, and I like the option of going into a branch, even though I do 99% of my banking online and by ATM.

Anyone have any experience with PNC, good or bad?

I have a friend who works for USAA as a cliams MGR and he could tell you other wise. Even though they don't have stockholders if they do not control cost their rates go up and if their rates get to high they have people like me taking away their customers. The kicker to that is usually the best customers start to leave first making it even worse. That cycle happens to all insurance companies at some point and as an agent its not much fun.

Your in LA and I'm only lic in Virginia. I can tell you our rates in LA are not that great. I'm not saying USAA is not a good company because they are I'm just saying its not the same company it was 10 or 20 years back. You probably are saving money through them but I would also say to shop their rates from time to time.

gotcha, i was very curious. i've gotten quotes from every large company and no one had even come close to usaa. i wanted to compare my rates to yours but i moved from md, not va.

Exactly. I'm a BOA customer with our checking accounts and a few credit cards, and my wife and I also have an account with BB&T. BOA has great customer service and doesnt hit me with any exorbitant fees. That's all I really care about.

Actually I think BOA is one of the worse. They tried to hit me with a $105 late fee on a business CC account. I was a few days late but had never been late and I had to threaten to cancel the card before they would remove the fee.

Re: Where Do You Bank?

Well fortunately I haven't had to deal with overdraft fees since my college days. I don't pay any other fees other than the interest rates on my credit cards. I was gonna drop them if they went through with that $5 monthly fee, but they thought better of that.

I've had nothing but good experiences with their customer service. I had someone jack my check card number somehow a few years back and they charged a few grand in unauthorized purchases. BOA's fraud department was great. Very courteous, and they put the money back in my account immediately, overnighted me new cards, etc etc.

Re: Where Do You Bank?

The only reason my account is still with BOA is that I'm lazy and I need to spend all my points before I cancel the cards. I pay every office expense with my BOA card then pay it off each month. I'm their worse customer. They pay me points and make nothing in return.

I have BOA for my debit cards and they are great no problems and plenty of ATM's, even the Royal Farms has the ATM's. Plus you can go to CA and still have your local bank. Online banking rocks with them as well.

Now as far as my car loans (all paid off right now) mortgages savings accounts etc.... I do all that through Navy Federal. Can't beat them!
