Redskins Have Not Had Success On Drafting Quarterbacks
Since the end of the regular season we have had many topics and debates over who the Redskins should draft or sign at the quarterback position. I looked back in history of the Redskins organization on drafting quarterbacks and we have drafted such players like Sammy Baugh, Eddie LeBaron, Norm Snead, and Jay Schroeder. Yes I said Jay Schroeder. Look I hate to break the news to some of you but we did not draft Billy Kilmer, Sonny, or Joe Theismann. They were either free agents or part of player trades to aquire them. Even the great Joe Gibbs did not draft Doug Williams he signed him as a free agent. If you want to know who we actually drafted to be our franchise quarterback over the years well lets start here with the following:
1.Mark Rypien drafted 1986 Rd 6 (played 1986-1994) Super Bowl MVP 2.Stan Humphries drafted 1988 Rd 6 (played 1989-1991) Traded to Chargers played in Super Bowl XXIX 3.Cary Conklin drafted 1990 Rd 4 (played 1990-1993) Bum 4.Gus Frerotte drafted Rd 7 ( played 1994-1998) Journeyman 5.Heath Shuler drafted Rd 1 pk 3 ( played 1994-1996) Bust 6.Patrick Ramsey drafted Rd 1 pk 32 (played 2002-2005) Back Up QB 7.Jason Campbell drafted Rd 1 pk 25 (played 2005-2009) Started for Raiders until injuries We also had some others who were drafted in the later rounds such as Colt Brennan and Sage Rosenfels. I would love for us to draft RGIII in the 1st Rd but Redskins history has shown that we do not know how to evaluate franchise quarterbacks in DC. So what do we do ? We sign free agents quarterbacks that other teams did not want like the following ( Jeff George,Tim Hasslebeck, John Beck, Danny Wuerffel, Tony Banks, Donovan McNabb). How can Redskins fans blame Shanny for our quarterback problems when this has been a issue for over 30 years folks. We should have such luck to draft a Peyton Manning or Brett Farve who can be the face of the franchise for the next 10-12 years. People we don't have history on our side when it comes to this positon so why shiould it change this years draft. Do we take a flyer on a older unhealthy Peyton Manning or a young raw talent who we may have to drop two 1st rd picks and a 2nd or 3rd pick. I hate to make this call and be wrong because our fans cannot go another 5-7 years without a franchise QB. Im just putting some facts out their what do you think? HTTR |
Re: Redskins Have Not Had Success On Drafting Quarterbacks
Joe Theisman & Sammy Baugh!
Unless you believe in curses, all that matters is how this current regime drafts. |

Re: Redskins Have Not Had Success On Drafting Quarterbacks
FYI- Joe Gibbs was the OC in Tampa when the Bucs drafted Doug Williams. In fact, he went to personally scout him at Grambling and made the push to get him.
By bad for typo....automatic spell check correction on DROID. |
Re: Redskins Have Not Had Success On Drafting Quarterbacks
we break the trend this year. I really dont think we have drafted enough QBs. Im of the mindset you should spend a draft pic on a QB at least every other year.

Re: Redskins Have Not Had Success On Drafting Quarterbacks
The past is irrelevant. Can't worry about past failures, all that matters is hitting on one in this draft.

you're right, was actually drafted by Miami but never signed & went to CFL. Sammy Baugh was the 6th pick! That's a sign we shouldn't trade out of that spot. :) |
Re: Redskins Have Not Had Success On Drafting Quarterbacks
New history is made every day. Our past history drafting qb's has absolutely nothing to do with how our coaches, today, will evaluate how to proceed at qb in this upcoming season.

Completely agree! What does 20 years ago have to do with how this coaching administration evaluates talent? |
Re: Redskins Have Not Had Success On Drafting Quarterbacks

Lol. Exactly what I thought when I saw the thread title pop up on the main page. What the Skins have done with QBs historically means nothing. My only concern is this regime saw fit to trade for McNabb and also deem Rex/Beck as quality pro passers. But that's also kicking a horse that's been dead for months now. At this point there's really no news until there is some. |
Re: Redskins Have Not Had Success On Drafting Quarterbacks
If anyone actually followed this logic, then the current regime of the Lions should have never drafted Stafford.

And who knew Gibbs was an OF? Did he play center field? But yeah, I'm not totally sure I get this thread. |

Re: Redskins Have Not Had Success On Drafting Quarterbacks
Trent Green
|
Re: Redskins Have Not Had Success On Drafting Quarterbacks
We didn't draft Green... the Chargers did.

Re: Redskins Have Not Had Success On Drafting Quarterbacks
I am hearing more and more how this coming draft is deep in DT's, OL and possibly deep at CB & WR if a few (Cb&Wr) prospects with size show some some separation speed and skills. It could be deep there as well.
At Qb, after Luck and RG there is a significant drop off. Tannehill would be a desperate reach at #6. If we can not move up from #6 to get Luck or RG, and if RG is gone when we pick at #6; by the numbers alone there would definitely be a stud blue chip player there for us to take at #6 at position of need. Morris Claiborne, CB LSU or Jonathan Martin, OT, Standford; or trade down a few spots for David DeCastro, OG Stanford and get an extra pick to get a Qb later and/or in FA. Either one of these three is a quality day one starter for years to come, with pro bowl potential if they stay healthy. They would also fit really great in our scheme. What you would want out a #6 pick. |

Re: Redskins Have Not Had Success On Drafting Quarterbacks
Theres rumors and rumblings coming out of Andrew Lucks camp that his dad (and he) are starting to get worried and annoyed by Irsay's antics handling Peyton Manning situation...Stay tuned folks we've still got 2 1/2 months to hurt/help that situation.

68 more days till the draft. what's the over/under on new threads about the qb position? I put it at 66.

100. Because once free agency roles around, we're going to have new members signing up and posting about the same thing, only with 5 different titles. Which qb should we sign? Debate: Orton v. Manning; who fits best for us? Alternate scenario #19: What if we sign Manning, draft RG3, and trade RG3 for more picks?! Check my blog for more info on this qb debate! The qb nobody is talking about yet whom we will sign; his name rhymes with new seas. The official give John Beck a 2nd chance thread! (started by J.B. who is completely unaffiliated with John Beck) |
Re: Redskins Have Not Had Success On Drafting Quarterbacks
Our current HC, who is also our personnel guy, put his reputation on the line with Rex "thumbs" Grossman and John "Dump off" Beck. SMFH
Before you say it........Please do not tell me you believe Allen calls the shots? |
Re: Redskins Have Not Had Success On Drafting Quarterbacks
People make too big a deal out of Shanny's words and not his actions. He sacrificed nearly nothing for short term situations in Rex and Beck.

Not to mention in 2004 when the Chargers were set to take Rivers they were coming off Drew Brees, who at the time they believed to be a bust, and Ryan Leaf, the poster boy for draft busts. |
Re: Redskins Have Not Had Success On Drafting Quarterbacks
I do believe sooner or later the Redskins will draft their own QB and he will be the face of the franchise for a long, long time. The Redskins haven't had success with QBs because they weren't evaluated thoroughly enough before they were selected. Who is the best QB we've had since the 1991 season? Brad Johnson, I would assume. In 2005 Joe Gibbs put all of his eggs in one basket concerning Jason Campbell when he should have taken Aaron Rodgers. It's a mystery as to why drafted quarterbacks haven't amounted to much for this franchise since the end of Gibbs I all the way up to this point.
I do firmly believe, that Rg3 will be the exception to that. |
