Should Augusta National Admit Women?
Pretty straightforward question.
While I think it's time for them to come into the 21st century and allow women to become members, I don't feel people hold the organization or the tournament in low regard because they haven't. That said, if Augusta had a policy that didn't allow minorities people would be boycotting and outraged until they overturned it. |
Re: Should Augusta National Admit Women?
yes, point blank its effing retarded.
|
Re: Should Augusta National Admit Women?
Yep, even though it's not hurting the club as you said 12th, there's no reason in this day and age women shouldn't be allowed to join.
|
Re: Should Augusta National Admit Women?
So, is it okay for any group, be they black, white, male, female, Hispanic, senior citizens, Christian, atheist, etc., etc. to say "This group is closed to any one not of the group". If you accept direct government funding, I think the answer is obviously "No". What if you accept no funding? Is it okay for political incorrect exclusive clubs to exist?
I'm not asking legally, but, from the gut -- "In this day and age" is it okay for a group of Blacks to exclude whites from a private club? Do we allow people to gather "with their own kind" - whatever that kind is? If so, why? If not, why not? |
Re: Should Augusta National Admit Women?
Joe, sometimes I get the impression that you like to hear yourself talk:)
What's a bit strange for me is that I don't look "down", as it were, on Augusta or it's members. I do think they are a bunch of good old boys that just want to keep things the way they are. And you know what, I can't blame them one bit or judge them. I think it's more about class in their mind than gender. I don't agree with it, but I do get it. Some clubs are simply defined by their exclusivity, prestige, and air of mystic. |
Re: Should Augusta National Admit Women?
It's a private club, membership by invitation. No, they shouldn't be forced to allow women.
|
Have to agree with Rat on this one. If a private club wants to limit membership to select people I have no issue as long as they aren't taking any public funding.

Well, no one else does, so it's up to me. Of course, it helps that I am the most interesting man I know. As to Augusta, I got no problem with "exclusive" clubs so long as they aren't taking funds from the general public or otherwise benefitting through special perks, etc. |

Not to mention the kitchen at Augusta isn't THAT big, and there's only so many sandwiches that need making. |
Re: Should Augusta National Admit Women?
Its a private club.
They should be able to have any type of membership they want. Its no ones place to say otherwise, especially the govt. |

Eh. As a woman, I'm prone to agree. It's an archaic and incredibly stupid rule but it IS a private club, meaning they can reject whoever, no matter how despicable the rule is. Aren't there still country clubs that don't allow blacks as members? I remember it wasn't TOO long ago that the country club in Chevy Chase started allowing black members... I believe. I don't think I'm dreaming that up... Or maybe it was a different issue pertaining to black membership. I'm not certain. Someone correct me if they know. |

Have to agree here. |
Re: Should Augusta National Admit Women?
Also useful way to decide what kind of people you want to associate with.
Me? I'm going somewhere where they have women and 21st Century attitudes, eff Augusta! |
Re: Should Augusta National Admit Women?
This topic started an argument with my girlfriend and I. We compared it to colleges having to admit women. I went to VMI, and the discussion was a big part of my life back then.
In the end we agreed that if you receive tax dollars you should have to oblige the public in general. If you are completely privately funded, it's at the discretion of the members that donate their $$. Sex is a protected class when considering employment. I dont believe however that it's protected in this instance. I'm not an attorney, so that's just my uninformed opinion. We need a break from our wives for christ sake. What's so bad about just having a place for us? I would further argue that women would be infringing on my right to happiness by forcing the issue. The problem is my rights cant be protected if they harm someone else's rights. |
Re: Should Augusta National Admit Women?
No. It's a private male club.
I'm not allowed in Excitement Video on Ladies Night either...same deal. Wait, I meant to say Bed Bath and Beyond. Women have PLENTY of their own organizations and clubs of their own and men do not whine constantly about getting in...we just accept it. Augusta has the right to conduct their business however they want. |
Re: Should Augusta National Admit Women?
Just to be clear, I don't think anyone's advocating for the gov't to intervene and I'm 110% certain they won't and don't have any desire to do so. But the question on most people's minds is how can Augusta National and the Masters, a prominent sporting event and institution in it's own right, not reflect today's America in it's membership and values.
Look, it is what it is. It's not like Agusta sprung this policy on everyone a week ago. It's been in place since it's inception. As long as they're not openly hostile towards women or marginalizing their role in society, (which one could fairly argue by denying membership they are doing just that) then you know what, they can do what they please. Like I said earlier, I feel what you have here is a bunch of good old boys that love their golf, bourbon and cigars and are still holding onto the America from way back when. It's not unreasonable to say this is just as much about preserving legacy, as weird as that may sound. The real pressure to change will probably come from within. Perhaps an insanely influential or wealthy woman connected on the inside will be the catalyst is my guess. Nothing like having a woman shame you into changing your ways. lol |

Me? I'm going somewhere where they have women and 21st Century attitudes, eff Augusta!
21st-century attitude? No one is demanding womens' organizations adopt the same flexibility and stray from their founding purpose/vision. It has nothing to do with being old-fashioned or "stone age"...they have their own PRIVATE club and can run it however they want. If Augusta is forced to admit women, we need to also apply the same standard to everything...eliminate race-based memberships and scholarships, force all womens' colleges to go co-ed, etc. If they want a golf club just for women, NO ONE is stopping them from scraping up the money to start one. |
21st-century attitude?
Yes.
No one is demanding womens' organizations adopt the same flexibility and stray from their founding purpose/vision.
This is a club, not an organization.
It has nothing to do with being old-fashioned or "stone age"...they have their own PRIVATE club and can run it however they want.
Yes, I've already stated that.
If Augusta is forced to admit women, we need to also apply the same standard to everything...
Why? We're discussing gender, not 'everything'.
eliminate race-based memberships and scholarships, force all womens' colleges to go co-ed, etc.
Bit of a leap from gender to race. You can change your gender, you can't change your race.
If they want a golf club just for women, NO ONE is stopping them from scraping up the money to start one.
Yeah, they could have a bake sale or make sandwiches..... |
Re: Should Augusta National Admit Women?
ill ask the obvious, if Augusta was whites only, would they have to admit minorities?
|
Re: Should Augusta National Admit Women?
Being a sexist culturally is still somewhat more palatable socially than being a racist.

Re: Should Augusta National Admit Women?
Time to ban the "Hair Club for Men" too.

Dont ban it, just open it up. Unfortunately i've known some women that could use the product. |

Obviously they wouldn't HAVE to admit minorities but what credible names would they draw to the event? And what network would carry it? No one. They would cease to exist I would think. Tiger Woods wouldn't risk his brand playing in such a tournament and neither would the other elite golfers. I know it's a hypothetical, but it would be a terrible business decision on their part to put that out there. |

Yes, except rhythm, we can't have that either. |

yes

Re: Should Augusta National Admit Women?
So I haven't really been following but did Augusta decide then not to extend to the IBM CEO (a woman) membership, as they have with other major Masters sponsors' CEOs?
|
Re: Should Augusta National Admit Women?
One of the life lessons I learned from my father is to stay away from places where you are not welcomed/wanted. Seeing how they are a private club they are free to do as they please and so am I. I don't watch the Masters, I don't buy crap from them...they are a nobody to me and that's they way it will stay with or without admittance of female members.
If people are upset they should be upset with the PGA for holding an official PGA Event there. |
Re: Should Augusta National Admit Women?
I doubt that Augusta will have problems attracting another sponsor.

Re: Should Augusta National Admit Women?
Whats the big deal. Why would a woman even want to join other then to prove a point. If there was an all women or black private club and that's what they wanted why would I want to even join? The people that want to break up these private clubs have an agenda or have personal issues.
