*Please read*
With the draft coming up I think it's worth revisiting the forum guidelines.
Specifically the part about reading before you post. It's become a bit of an issue lately in case you haven't noticed. When posting a link to a breaking news item, at least take a quick look back at the last couple of pages in a thread to see if it's already been posted. Chances are it has. And try a search once in a while. Don't assume that just because you haven't been on the forum for a few hours that nobody else has posted it already. And if your excuse is well I don't have the time to check to see if it's already been posted, I'll go ahead and save you some more time by saying don't even bother to post it then. Pretty easy right? Before you post... stop, read, search, and then consider posting. Ok? |
Re: *Please read*
check, check and.........check!
BoooYah.....ready for the draft! Damn am I ready! |
Re: *Please read*
are we doing a mock this year?

Re: *Please read*
"i didn't see this posted anywhere" aka "I didn't even bother to see if it was posted anywhere"
"i didn't see this posted anywhere" aka "I didn't even bother to see if it was posted anywhere"
Aka "I want to be the first to break news so bad I won't even do due diligence and check to see if it's already been posted, because 99.9% of the time it already has been." |
Fine. In case you have not heard RFK is being torn down and a new stadium will be built called FEDEX.

Re: *Please read*
breaking news: matty wants you to read the forum guidelines. you heard it here first!

Re: *Please read*
Cool.. I think that the draft forum kinda hides away what we are talking about most at this time but it is cool having one.. that and sometimes 50 page threads with one title but have evolved into other things can keep people from noticing things. Too much story under one headline. I'll do my best though.
|
Re: *Please read*
People. You can make your thread pages longer so you have fewer. I list 40 replies per page rather than 10. It's better. Do it.

Doesn't change it being everything under the sun in one thread though. |
Re: *Please read*
I don't post new threads usally anymore for just that. I would be linking an article and someone beat me to it by a matter of minutes. It happened a couple times, a few times I didn't check. I usually post original stuff, but have had too many "doh" moments.

We can definitely use more new threads, we'll work on that. |

Sweet. You guys have been doing great with the qb rumors, visit tracking, fa/trade stuff. The Skins trading for number 2 becoming the everything rg3 thread was the one that stood out the most to me. Obviously I keep coming back so not trying to make a huge deal. |

That's not an excuse for what we've seen too much of lately, which is seeing people post what was just written a post before them. But I've started several fresh new threads anyway, hopefully to make it easier |

But I've started several fresh new threads anyway, hopefully to make it easier
True.. but had it been an active thread under that title they likely would've seen it. I try to always scroll back a few pages to check for stuff but yeah, obviously that hasn't been the case with many lately. Hence the need for new descript threads. Better to follow and much better for searching.. both internally and through the googles |
Re: *Please read*
All it takes is someone reading back a page, or even sometimes just a few posts to see that something has already been posted. That's all we're trying to address.

Re: *Please read*
But what if you can't read or writexagdnioasid?

Re: *Please read*
I maybe an idiot but I don't see a search engine feature. Where is it located?

Someone want to grab some screen shots for him? |
Re: *Please read*
Is this where I break news that RGIII turned down the Colts for a private workout?
|
Re: *Please read*
Someone want to grab some screen shots for him?
To be fair it is not on the home page you need to go into a actual forum to see the search option, it is kind of a PITA. |
Re: *Please read*
One click to get into a forum is a pain?
|
Re: *Please read*
One click to get into a forum is a pain?
if it were on the main page it might make it easier for people to see, thus cutting down on multiple threads. it's not hard to find if you have used it before, but for newer members or the average lazy poster it would be easier to find on the main page. i have no idea how hard it would be to do something like that though so i could see moving it being more of a pain in the ass than it's worth. just my :twocents: |

Not for those of us who shop at Target. 2 hands for typing, 1 for clicking. |

...but you have to go into the forum to create said thread. (hence you now see it) LOGIC FAIL. |
Re: *Please read*
Plus, when you start a new thread there's a button right next to the title bar that says "check if already posted"
But anyhow, wasn't trying to be an ass. I was honestly asking if someone wanted to grab some screen shots for him? |

Exactly! Sometimes I am trying to find a thread or something else not necessarily start a new one. One would thin if they were unsure that something like a search button would be on the home page. The one click is not the PITA knowing you have to make one click and which click to get to it is the PITA. |

Re: *Please read*
Perfect solution to the problem; just have the mods start the threads.

Mods shouldn't have to babysit like it's jail. All it takes is a little common sense and 3 seconds to search. It's not brain surgery. |
Re: *Please read*
Everyone should be able to start new threads. When they fail to understand the guiding principles behind searching before starting, that privilege can be removed.
I have found i hate starting threads, because i'm too lazy to search. Normally there is a macro-thread that i can post the article i've found in. |

I have been a board member for 7(?) years and started maybe a dozen threads. People ought to really be more considered when a thread idea comes to them. I have to say at least half the threads that come up around here are sorta useless. Not awful but not really needed in a lot of cases. But I just ignore them. That's the nature of a board like this. |

I agree with you. It was a bit of tongue in cheek comment. Playing devil's advocate, IMHO, I'd put some sort of statute of limitations on the search. I mean, if I have a topic I'd like to post and I think it's interesting enough that it deserves its own thread, and I do a search to find out someone posted it back in 2005, am I to assume we can never talk about said subject forever and ever amen? I'd probably add an addendum to say do a search to make sure it's not a current trending thread or one that was posted within the last six months or so. Plenty of new members are added in three years time if the forum is interesting enough, and new members are more than likely going to discuss things that some of us long time members have already discussed in the past. It's just a thought though. A forum that's new user friendly is one that will thrive. |
Re: *Please read*
I think we're getting away from the original point here, which is to spend a little more time reading vs posting, especially when it comes to breaking news stories.

Sorry Matt, didn't mean to deviate from the original topic. And, I think you just answered my questions! Cheers to you! |
And to those that complain, to be fair, the path is one of the least restrictive (in terms of postings and new threads) forums. A lot of forums will ban and kick you without warning.

Exactly. People should thank Matty for being a forgiving god. A merciful god. A loving god. Even when I browse ES, I just shake my head at how mods(one in particular) treat some of the long standing members. Pretty much ban them for the slightest thing, and doesn't matter what they write, they'll say it falls under X rule. Don't dare talk back to them or feel their wrath. I don't want a board like that. I enjoy the low key forum we have here and I thank the mods for their work even though they aren't getting paid to do it. I'd buy them beers if they were close by for having to put up with us misfits. :food-smil |

And the one mod you mentioned is probably one that I'm thinking of. That place is a perfect example of constant chaos. |
