Re: cooley done in dc?
If he's healthy he's going to be here, probably just have to take a cut.
|
Re: cooley done in dc?
It's crazy how so many people forget how good he was when on the field.
If he's healthy, not only will he be here but he'll be an important part of the offense. We have two great TEs...why break that up? |
Re: cooley done in dc?
The team won't break that up, and they have Paulson, and now Niles Paul in case someone goes down. Cooley and Davis were more pass catching TE's and Paulson and Paul are probably going to be more blocking TE's.

the play he makes at 3:44 is one of my favorites

[YT]gOtEDS8nyUY[/YT]
3:44, mine too, and i remember it like it was yesterday. That catch told the C-turds they had one long awaited azz kickin coming. 1st sweep of the C-girls in forever and actually got to stick my chest out a little around the Evil Empire. |

Re: cooley done in dc?
Cooley will be a Redskin this fall 2012 ...
|
Re: cooley done in dc?
TE is about the only position (beside QB) where I think that there is no competition. An undrafted camp body would have to look like Todd Christenson and probably still not make the team. I guess the only question is who the official starter would be. Cooley, Paul, Paulson and Davis will all get plenty of action and I think Paul might lead the team in ST tackles.
If anything, I'd like to see Davis traded if a spot is needed. He'd bring more interest from other teams and I'd be surprised if he doesn't get another strike for weed within 2 years. |

paul is smaller than cooley. i high doubt he'll be an effective blocker. he's more of a pass-catching TE too. Paulsons a lock as he's our only blocking TE. i think Paul only makes the roster if we roll with 4 TEs or cut Cooley |

He's young, homegrown, and about to breakout in a big way with RGIII now at QB. I share your concern about his being one strike away from being suspended for a full year. But what is Shanahan to do about him? The Skins must have talent to win and players like him don't grow on trees. As nervous as I am about a possible relapse by Davis, I think that keeping him is a risk that's worth taking. Also, if Cooley can stay healthy (obviously, I don't believe that Chris is done in D.C.), we have some insurance for a year or two if Davis should be suspended again. |

He already is an effective blocker as a WR, that's how he earned playing time. Now, it will be different for him when he's up against 250 lb. LBs & 280 lb. DEs, but I would guess that the move to TE is due to his blocking abiliity. His potential to be a good recieving TE seems more a long-term luxury to me. |
Re: cooley done in dc?
Releasing him is the right move. Good teams know when to move on...

Not so sure a converted WR is gonna be used primarily as a blocker... But I agree that they won't break up the Cooley/Davis duo. Fred is a bong hit away from a 1 year suspension. At the end of the day I think he restructures his contract and sticks around. |
Re: cooley done in dc?
I love Cooley. Great Redskin. Keep him on.
That being said, and I know he played a bit of FB last year, but did anyone notice in the above compilation how many damn screen passes he caught? At least 50-60% of those highlights are screen passes. GEEZ....... Lets hope with RG3, the bootlegs, and some actual weapons at WR, we can actually threaten teams down the field this year. If we do, you'll see the average yardage on those screens JUMP up..... |
Re: cooley done in dc?
We're simply not a good enough football team to let go of good football players. Find a way to keep Cooley.
|
Re: cooley done in dc?
If Cooley can play at the level that he played in in 2008, and Fred Davis plays at the level he did last year, the Redskin offense with RG3 and its receivers will be unstoppable. Although Mike Shanahan likes running the football a lot, I can see us being a passing team mostly.

Lets bring Art Monk back and have him play at a 1984 level for us to:) The 2008 Cooley is long gone and this old man is all that's left... |
Re: cooley done in dc?
29 is the new 89 I guess.
He doesn't have to be the 2008 CC, the 2010 one would be just fine. |

Re: cooley done in dc?
His body is shot. He's an old ass 29 with knee problems. His knee only feels good now because he's not playing any games on it. I guess we will find out this summer. I don't see him making the team.

I saw a stat on ESPN that showed we had the fourth lowest percentage of running plays in the league last season. Under 40% of our plays were runs. Based on that, I'd say we are already a passing team. We're just not a very effective passing team yet. |

Agreed, but in 2013 pack your bags Chris. This is a business and we will be 18 million short again next season so some will have to go. |
Re: cooley done in dc?
With the news that the Skins will not be getting any cap back, I think this all but seals it for Cooley's departure on this team unless he's willing to take one hell of a pay cut. Cutting him would save the team 2.3 mil in cap space. You simply can't have a 2nd string TE that's slated for a 6 million dollar cap value.
I know fans love Cooley, but this is a business. Now, if he restructures to take much less, I could see him being back. |

Shanny doesn't run that offense typically, when you are behind you pass more. |

Re: cooley done in dc?
He will probably re-structure. He probably knows that he isn't going to be a starter unless there is an injury in the NFL. His body is very broken down at 29. He is a great guy but he has had alot of injuries over the years. He might make a very good backup. We will see.
|
Re: cooley done in dc?
I hope they keep him, but I could understand if they drop him or trade him if possible. Cooley is one of the last Gibbs II guys on the roster, if he isn't indeed the last one left. It will sad if they did get rid of him. He is a great player still and is a team guy.

2 receptions in a single game makes him a pass catching TE? he was a passblocking WR for the most part |
Re: cooley done in dc?
love Cooley but between injuries and dropsies over the past few years if we have to move on.. we do
it's not like we've been a winning team with him.. or due to him... don't get me wrong, he's greatly contributed to the limited success that we've had.. and I'll always view him as a TRUE Redskin, but part of being a fan is wanting the best for your team.. so I hope that he can contribute well |

:pffff: :Smoker: |
Re: cooley done in dc?
Don't count Chris Cooley out just yet. He's just had a major set back. He's heading back in the right direction. He's slimmed down after dropping twenty pounds and he says his knee is feeling okay. Hopefully, he can return to the Chris Cooley of old.
|
Re: cooley done in dc?
As others said, Cooley will be retained only if the restructures to ultimately take a pay cut. Davis is the undisputed starter unless he gets suspended (again) or injured. Cooley is an important backup at this point but you can't have a backup eat up so much toward the salary cap.
The Niles Paul move to TE is insurance against possibly losing Cooley IMO. If Cooley takes the cut and is actually healthy he'll be the primary backup. If Cooley chooses to move on it's a big opportunity for Paul. |

Sounds all well and good. But where does this leave Logan Paulsen? He's the forgotten tight end now. |

Cooley Might be the most consistant target for RG111 ?
|
Re: cooley done in dc?
FD better come to camp ready to work, because I think CC is going to be breathing down his neck.

Yeah, but only because he's a step behind.... I kid! It will be nice for once NOT to have the focus on our inept Quarterbacktuation, right? |
