Did Shanny Strip Haslett of Play Calling vs Rams?

In case you haven't heard, internet rumors are swirling that Shanny stripped Haslett of play calling in favor of Raheem Morris during the 4th quarter of the Rams game.

Make of it what you will.

WTF! A coaching controversy? I want to cry.

IF this is true, than this team may already be ending their season before it really even started. This is basically the beginning of the end of our season, because players taking sides and a defense thats already lost 2 of their best players isn't going to get much better with coaching problems.

I don't know, that might be a little dramatic man. I think the players want to WIN.

If it's true, they just need to can Has now and move on. The team can totally survive this if they want. How many times have we seen the Giants and other teams weather internal conflicts and go on to the playoffs.

I wouldn't be at all surprised if Morris takes over as DC next year, assuming the D doesn't get straightened out over the course of this season.

Right now though, I think this may be a bit overblown.

I won't lie, I DID see something heated going on with Haslett and Morris, but not necessarily between each other. Both were just screaming at something, not sure it was about that though.

Re: Did Shanny Strip Haslett of Play Calling vs Rams?

See, the problem is this: if Shanahan wasn't pleased with the defensive playcalling all he had to do was tell Haslett to play more man. Did they even game plan? I hate to continue to beat a dead horse but, Shanahan seemed to drop the ball a few times this game.

SmootSmack 09-19-2012 11:22 AM

Re: Did Shanny Strip Haslett of Play Calling vs Rams?

Haslett's been dead man walking for a while. Not being told they were meeting with Raheem back in February (or whenever it was) should have been the only clue he needed that his time here is short. I put this on MS though. He knew what he was getting with Haz

As for this particular rumor, I don't know. I'm on vacation

This article is all speculation. There has not been any indication that Morris was making the calls. The article states that players were choosing sides: What evidence is there of this? Also the article quotes Shannahan, but it is not an actual quote, it is a speculation of what Shannahan might be thinking.

You guys know more football than I do on this site, but as I was watching the game and obviously watching the Skins play zone and "way off" receivers on the line of scrimmage, I was wondering if they could play Amendola man to man and Zone everything else. Can you do that effectively? You know, take out their best guy with our best cover guy?

aircoryell 09-19-2012 11:36 AM

Re: Did Shanny Strip Haslett of Play Calling vs Rams?

If he did take over I didn't see much of a difference in the fourth quarter. Every single time Amendola lined up in the slot they allowed him a free release and a huge cushion.
I'm going to take a wait and see approach before jumping to conclusions. But some changes need to take place before giving up thirty points a game becomes habitual. I also do not believe all of the blame should be shouldered by Haslett.
By the way, does anyone know what type of defensive scheme Morris ran in Tampa? It would seem odd to me that Shanahan would hand over play calling responsibilities to someone who has not used the 3-4 primarily.

BigHairedAristocrat 09-19-2012 11:49 AM

Re: Did Shanny Strip Haslett of Play Calling vs Rams?

There was a huge difference in the 4th quarter - the huge cushion went away. Not that it helped us overall. Right now I think our secondary is just too untainted. Zone or man, well get burned either way. Rg3s gonna have to score alot of points.

I'd rather have Morris as the DC than Haz. But...I don't know if I want a change right now.

REDSKINS4ever 09-19-2012 11:55 AM

Re: Did Shanny Strip Haslett of Play Calling vs Rams?

The Redskins were playing a soft zone, which is why Bradford was able to throw for 310 yards. This is why Danny Amendola was able to have his way against the Redskins secondary. Any NFL WR can get open between a soft zone which is why Bradford continuously looked his way.

As far as Mike Shanahan being displeased with how the defensive play calling was going, why would he hand play calling duties over to the secondary coach when the defensive coordinator knows the play calling better than the secondary coach? They are not running Morris' defense. It is Haslett's defense. Something doesn't sound right to me. This could very well be garbled rumor.

you can. Philly was doing this last year depending on the match up. There is no rule saying you can't, i think it can make i more confusing for the guys on the field

Re: Did Shanny Strip Haslett of Play Calling vs Rams?

Haslett has already shown he isn't able to adjust during a game. I don't know if it's his stubborness or arrogance but I really don't want to see him here next year. Not sure if Morris is the right guy but going into a game playing a soft zone against a team with no wr's, then getting burined for most of the game and doing nothing about it til the end of the game is inexcusable. To me it's a fireable offense. Ritchie Petibone would've never ever ever let that shit happen.

RGIII 09-19-2012 12:22 PM

Re: Did Shanny Strip Haslett of Play Calling vs Rams?

Quick, throw some money at Tony Dungy to be the defensive coordinator. Dungy's and Shanahan's psychotic sideline stare would set this team right.

Not speculation at all. ES insiders have verified that this did in fact happen, but it was supposed to stay in house. Been saying that Haslett has been on the hot seat for a while now, and that seat just got hotter. Much hotter.

This. Haslett has never impressed, and his lack of adjustments will continually haunt this team. I'd give the reigns to Morris and see what happens for the rest of the season.

I find it very difficult to believe this is true. Haslett just a week ago called a heck of a game against NOLA; one game is not enough to strip the man of his responsibilities.

You better believe it. Haslett will not be the DC next year. Very well possible he could be replaced this year if the defense doesn't shape up.

Any chance we can pray the Jets have an awful season and Rex gets fired, and then we can replace Haz with Rex next year?

It wasn't even a whole game, only three-quarters!
The more and more I think about this, the less sense it makes. You have a defensive coach who brought this team from the thirty first ranked defense to thirteen overall in just one year. He has a bad half and Shannahan makes a knee jerk reaction to let a coach who's defense (Tampa), ranked 30th overall last year, take over playing calling? This was after Orakpo, Carriker and Josh Wilson left the game to injuries! His reasoning would have been better play calling would make up for three crucial parts of our defense? I'm not buying it.
This goes against the grain of how Shannahan has handled other adversary circumstances regarding coaches. If this were true, Danny Smith would have been stripped of his responsibilities long ago.
This is a rumor, and until something concrete comes out, it will stay just that.

Re: Did Shanny Strip Haslett of Play Calling vs Rams?

If there were real sources to this it would be all over NFLN and ESPN etc. While it's probably not true I do wonder if a switch could be good, even mid-season. Haslett calls a bad game too often to make the defense reliable. He's not a long-term solution at d coordinator.

I wish we could have got Wade Phillips here when he left Dallas. Was there a falling out between him and Mike in the past?

It wasn't just a "bad half". Seven out of the past nine games our opponents have put up 30 points (or very close to it).

Cowboys - 27
Jets - 34
Patriots - 34
Vikings - 33
Eagles - 34
Saints - 32
Rams - 31

Haslett was on notice the moment Shanny went out and grabbed Morris without Jim even aware of it. (or no say so either)
