Is Wynn worth it?

2005 salary $ 4,083
Release fee $ 1,750

I say cut him ,Williams can get somebody to perform.

Daseal 02-25-2005 01:27 AM

Re: Is Wynn worth it?

The man JUST restructured to help us out! Wynn has played solid every single year. He's not a speed rusher on the end but he's very solid and we need to try to keep him. I don't think our Dline is in need of any help right now - we have bigger priorities.

Sheriff Gonna Getcha 02-25-2005 01:43 AM

Re: Is Wynn worth it?

Wynn's cap figure is somewhat ridiculous. But, as Daseal pointed out, the guy just did restructure. I don't think it sends a good message to renegotiate a guy's deal and then cut him. Also, he is a solid run-stuffer. Third, good defensive ends are among the league's highest paid players. Finally, he seems to be a good "team guy;" he never bitches and seems to want to be here.

are u sure thats his salary this year after the restructure?

Re: Is Wynn worth it?

Yeah he is one of the many that we are overpaying. Solid player, even better now that GW is here, but still over paid.

Schneed10 02-25-2005 08:20 AM

Re: Is Wynn worth it?

Since Wynn just restructured, if you cut him now his cap hit in 2005 would be bigger by cutting him than it would by keeping him. You'd save no cap space.

The figures previously posted on the opening message in the thread are pre-restructure figures. Now that he's restructured, the whole situation changes.

He's not going anywhere.

Re: Is Wynn worth it?

Probably at least half the players in the NFL are overpaid....NOT just on the Redskins. Wynn isn't great, but he has been a solid player that wants to be here and seems to be a good locker room presence... i.e. "a core Redskin" (core players don't have to be "stars").
As Matty said, he's not going anywhere.

Re: Is Wynn worth it?

I don't care if we don't sign any of our "names", the defense proved that we can win with the no-namers. Betcha the Offense is the same way.

And that's why they will be alright. That's how the Patriots are, and that's exactly why they remind me of Gibbs Skins of old. Teams built of "no-name" players that become "stars" by their play, not because they were big names already.

Re: Is Wynn worth it?

I concur the guy did a favor and restructured.........if we cut him we become the Arizona Cardinals...........no player would want to come here, except maybe hasbeen Cowboys.........

Re: Is Wynn worth it?

Bozzy - Defense has a great scheme... Offense needs every star in the NFL.

Re: Is Wynn worth it?

If the question is "Is he worth it?" The answer is no.

If the question is "Will we do something about it?" The answer is no.

Schneed10 02-25-2005 09:54 AM

Re: Is Wynn worth it?

Guys, his 2005 cap figure after restructuring is only $2.19 million. He's not a problem, no reason to cut him.

Brandon Noble is a target for the axe, he could save us $1 million by cutting him. Cory Raymer is another possibility, cutting him would save $900K. We'd need replacements for those guys though.

Daseal 02-25-2005 09:55 AM

Re: Is Wynn worth it?

Need a replacement for Cory Raymer? Check the homeless shelter. There has to be someone on the street you can pick up that can snap a ball then actually put a hand on his guy before he jumps up in the passing lane.

Daseal, not to mention the guy is a veteran leader. From what I've heard, he's a great "locker room" guy.

Agreed. Plus Wynn hasn't missed a game in the last four years.

Re: Is Wynn worth it?

Yeah.....i say keep Wynn. He's a solid player on our d-line and someone who commands respect in the locker room. We still need to pick up a pass-rusher though!!!

Re: Is Wynn worth it?

Why not give Daniels a chance.

MTK 02-25-2005 10:55 AM

Re: Is Wynn worth it?

People keep saying we need to find a DE, we need to find a DE. Really though?

Sure it would be nice but with the creative ways Williams brings pressure it's not an absolute necessity. And like Daseal said, how about giving Daniels a chance? He might not be the sack machine everyone wants, but if he can stay healthy I think he could possibly give us 8-10 sacks.

A DE isn't a top priority in my opinion.

TheMalcolmConnection 02-25-2005 10:57 AM

Re: Is Wynn worth it?

This is another question of intangibles. Just as how we were talking about just "letting Coles walk" we cannot cut people who want to help the team out. A move like that would make everyone nervous and want either A) big fat contracts or B) big fat signing bonuses or both.

good point

Just to elaborate, Wynn isn't a 'sexy' player, but he's got a lot of the attributes a Gibbs' coached team looks for. He's a hard worker on and off the field, and he's a maximum effort guy who's going to bust his butt for you on every play.

We could do better, but we could certainly do a lot worse than Wynn.

Daniels is a great player when Healthy but that has yet to be seen. Daniels played 5 games last year with a total of 4 tackles. He has a hell of a bullrush no doubt but other than him............who do we have?? I just want more sacks!!

TheMalcolmConnection 02-25-2005 11:17 AM

Re: Is Wynn worth it?

I think that we address WR needs first then worry about the DE. I've said it once and I'll say it again, we were #3 in D last year. (Granted, we COULD use more sacks)

BigSKINBauer 02-25-2005 12:59 PM

Re: Is Wynn worth it?

i think wide reciever is first then o-line then d-line( saying that we keep smoot) and then maybe TE but royal played better.

For the offensive line is their any good centers on the market? we got good talent on the line but two players hurt it pretty bad. dockery and expecially raymer may need to be replaced, then i would say the d-line but our pass rush will improve next year with arrington and bowen and that means turnovers. Does anyone else feel we need another TE i mean kozlowski and royal, royal performed the last few weeks.

Re: Is Wynn worth it?

I dislike that in today's NFL, a DE's value is mostly measured by how many sacks he gets.
High price pass rush DE like Simeon Rice and Jevon Kearse usually get knocked on their ass on run plays. Where is that stat? Where is the stat of how many times a pass rush happy DE takes himself out of a run play by taking a wide path to the QB and missing his gap responsibility and the Rb all together?
The fact is the sack stat is a high glory high money stat. Sacks ARE very important and the mark of a good defense, but it should not be the MAIN measuring stick of a DE.
It amazes me that out of the top 10 sack leaders in the NFL in 2005 regular season: only one (Dwight Feeney was on a superbowl contender and did well in the playoffs), although their defense was their weakness. Proof that having a high sack DE is over rated?

NFL Top 10 Sack Leaders in 2005 regular Season
1 Dwight Freeney IND 16
2 Bertrand Berry ARI 14.5
3 Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila GB
4 Patrick Kerney ATL 13
5 Simeon Rice TB 12
6 Kevin Williams MIN 12
7 James Hall DET 11.5
8 Rod Coleman ATL 11.5
9 Shaun Ellis NYJ 11
10 Lance Johnstone MIN 11

Amen to that Matty - I've tried to get a bit more bitter bit can't find it! Seriously - don't mean to copy someone. Just don't like Cory Raymers play.

we bitched about wynn last year too, he was a 2mill/year guy making 4mill, but he's a good player and he shows up, so what are you going to do? Don't fix what ain't broke ;)

and raymer has to go...

BigSKINBauer 02-26-2005 02:06 PM

Re: Is Wynn worth it?

it is true though that our o-line would be better with another center. anyone good in the draft? I watched the combine some people are showing up

That Guy 02-26-2005 04:21 PM

Re: Is Wynn worth it?

they say this is one of the strongest center groups ever... so seems like a good year to start working someone up.

Yes we need a center.................
