Samari Rolle??
over at Extremeskins someone posted that Washington is close to signing Samari Rolle, said it was repoerted on Sirius Satellite Radio
Anyone else here it? |
Re: Samari Rolle??
I havent heard that at all? It would fit with Gibbs philosophy "Fill our needs through FA"
|
Re: Samari Rolle??
I'd rather have Ty Law, but I guess I'll have to start listening to NFL Radio in my car. I have Sirius, if I hear anything I'll let you all know. Just a heads up, though, I don't have a job so I barely ever drive anywhere.
|
Re: Samari Rolle??
Well I guess that means I gotta starting on a new nickname....RolleSmack!
|
Re: Samari Rolle??
thing about law is hes gonna want a bigger paycheck than bailey and hes 30 something so...
|
Re: Samari Rolle??
That thread at extremeskins has gone over 7 pages now and nobody has been able to supply a link to verify this speculation, so right now I think it's safe to say it's just a rumor.
|
Re: Samari Rolle??
I know he'll want the paycheck, but I think he's one of the best in the league when he's healthy and I just like the guy. I don't think he would be a smart pick up, but I think he'd be a better bet than Rolle. I haven't seen the same Samari that made me think he was one of the 3 best in the league since he injured his neck a few years ago.
|
Re: Samari Rolle??
Well its safe to say that we will have some people sign at 12:01 on the second. Mabye he'll be one of them.
|
Re: Samari Rolle??
Yeah I read that over there, but as matty said there was no real information. Plus with Gibbs saying that they had good talks with Smoot this week, I'm sure its just somthing being thrown around. I hope we keep Smoot, personally. I would be suprised it we took Rolle before March 2.
|
Re: Samari Rolle??
I've heard that on CBSSPORTSLINE.COM in the NFL RUMORMILL in the Titans section. Williams wants him because I believe that he coached the TITANS D there when Rolle was playin' his 1st couple of seasons and he must really like Rolle, but I could be wrong.

Re: Samari Rolle??
welcome to the board!
|
Re: Samari Rolle??
GENTLEMEN, START YOUR CHECKBOOKS
Get ready for some huge, HUGE money that is going to be shelled out to free-agent cornerbacks. Recently-released cornerback Samari Rolle from the Titans is going to sign a deal that includes a signing bonus of $12-$15 million, and is worth anywhere from $24-$26 million over the first three years of the deal. Ravens free-agent corner Gary Baxter already has turned down a $10 million signing bonus from Baltimore. Browns free-agent cornerback Anthony Henry is going to get at least a $10 million signing bonus. And if recently-released cornerback Ty Law is healthy, watch out. Some team such as the Chiefs or Colts is going to pay him big dollars for the big task of trying to knock off the Patriots. Suddenly, the one-year, $10.5 million tender that Oakland cornerback Charles Woodson signed looks like a bargain. heres the full article http://www.nfl.com/nflnetwork/story/8235292 |
Re: Samari Rolle??
rolle at his best is a better corner than smoot. but when you factor in that rolle is older, wants more money and kicked his wifes ass on valentines day,i would rather have smoot.
|
Re: Samari Rolle??
On my way to my gf's house I called NFL Radio on Sirius and they said that there is substance to the rumor. I was almost there so I didn't have time to get on the air, but the operator, or whatever he is said "there is substance to the rumor." He implied that the sides are in the same ballpark...the deal could be close.

Re: Samari Rolle??
hmm. Im sure there will be more info on it later if its true. Or if its not there will probably be more info on it

Re: Samari Rolle??
Mention of the Rolle rumor in the WP:
Meanwhile, sources said the Redskins have a strong interest in acquiring cornerback Samari Rolle, who was released last week by the Tennessee Titans in a salary cap purge. Vice President Vinny Cerrato last night denied the Redskins were in serious negotiations with Rolle. Rolle's agent, Peter Schaffer, declined to comment. Acquiring the 6-foot, 175-pound Rolle would almost certainly end cornerback Fred Smoot's career in Washington. Late last season, talks for an extension reached an impasse after Smoot declined Washington's offer that included a $10 million bonus. Smoot's camp countered with a $14 million bonus. One NFL source said Rolle, who was coached by assistant head coach of defense Gregg Williams when both were in Tennessee, has requested a signing bonus of at least $12 million. "He's not quite the cover guy that Smoot is, but he would be one of the top three cornerbacks available" in free agency, Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said Sunday at a hotel where his team officials, including Coach Bill Parcells, are staying. "He can still play." Last season, Rolle appeared in 12 games, finishing with one interception and 28 tackles, before undergoing left knee surgery. The seven-year veteran's best season was in 2000; Rolle made the Pro Bowl after making seven interceptions for the Titans. Saturday, Gibbs said the Redskins still hoped to re-sign Smoot and noted the cornerback was at Redskins Park last week for a meeting that included owner Daniel Snyder. Although the Redskins have emphasized character players, Rolle is scheduled for an April 6 court hearing for allegedly hitting his wife on Valentine's Day. Rolle turned himself in to police the next day on one misdemeanor charge of assault. He faces probation or up to one year in jail. |
Re: Samari Rolle??
I don't get this at all, why not bring Smoot back at a $12M bonus? Or should I say why won't Smoot come back for a $12M bonus?
This sucks. |

This sucks.
Yeah. Not only that, why couldn't that money be used to bring Smoot back!? |
Re: Samari Rolle??
rolle is a better corner than smoot for the same money
|
Re: Samari Rolle??
we dont have the space to make big moves to counter whats happening right now... i, for one, blame brunell.... and vinny ;)
|
Re: Samari Rolle??
rolle is a better corner than smoot for the same money
Maybe so, but Rolle is older and doesnt have the locker room presents that Smoot has. Smoot is/was a leader on the team, a guy who the younger players looked up to. Rolle is a vet, but he will have to earn that respect from the younger players. |
Re: Samari Rolle??
rolle was better than smoot. but rolle has had alot of injuries that slowed him down.
hell jerry jones is quoted in the WP article that smoot is a better cover corner than rolle. why arent we keeping our own players? this shit is getting rediculous. |
Re: Samari Rolle??
If we loose out on Smoot we need a plan B which is what i think the Rolle rumours are.
|
Re: Samari Rolle??
I think that Walt Harris and Wilds are pretty good plan B's. I mean Greg Williams even said that Wilds was ready to start last year but Springs and Smoot were healthy and there really wasnt much of an oppertunity for us to play him. I dont think that Rolle is really needed here. I understand that Williams likes him, but I think that we have other needs to address than corner.
|
Re: Samari Rolle??
Could it be that they are using the potential Rolle signing as leverage against Smoot? I surely hope so. Maybe the "organization" has just decided that they don't want Smoot back at any price. It sure is getting harder to support the skins.

Re: Samari Rolle??
Rolle vs. Smoot from Scouts Inc.
Name: Samari Rolle Position: Cornerback Grade: 80 | Key Alert: BD Comment: Rolle is undersized and gets pushed around too much by bigger receivers. He is not very physical in the passing game or the running game. He has adequate height, but lacks bulk and strength. Is a finesse DC that does not like to press receivers. He is a below average tackler who does not fill hard vs. the run. He also has had lots of trouble staying healthy for a complete season. However, when Rolle is healthy he is one of the more athletic cover corners in the NFL. Is versatile enough to play outside or inside against the slot receiver, but spends most of his time on the outside. He is quicker than fast, but rarely gets beat one-on-one down the sideline because he has excellent technique and recognition skills, and he has very smooth hips. He is at his best in the short-to-intermediate zone when he can take chances and jump underneath routes. Possesses rare recognition skills and he plays with great technique. Overall, Rolle is one of the better pure cover corners in the NFL.

Name: Fred Smoot Position: Cornerback Grade: 74 | Key Alert: None Comment: Smoot is a playmaker that has led the team in interceptions in each of his first three seasons but he is extremely inconsistent and he has had some problems staying healthy. Is fast enough to run with receivers downfield, has the body control to adjust to the ball while it's in the air and has great leaping abililty. Can change directions without losing much speed in transition, shows good burst coming out of cuts and flashes the ability to blanket receivers underneath. Is aggressive, will jump routes and fights for the ball. Plays with great confidence and doesn't allow mistakes to affect play. Takes a lot of chances, can be overaggressive at times and is vulnerable to effective pump fakes. Smoot has the speed, agility and confidence to develop into a shutdown corner but he hasn't progressed as expected. His technique remains inconsistent, he gives up too many big plays and he offers little in run support. Smoot's interception-production should also dip with the departure of Champ Bailey, as teams won't be forced to throw in Smoot's direction limiting his opportunities to make a play on the ball.
|
Re: Samari Rolle??
I would disagree with saying Smoot has problems staying healthy. He might get hurt, but he normally plays through it.
|
Re: Samari Rolle??
This move would almost seem like a wash.
The only thing that's keeping me from losing my head is the fact Williams knows Rolle and must think he's a better fit in his defense. If Williams wants Rolle over Smoot, I'm going to bite my tongue and trust his judgement, despite the fact I think we're losing a real team guy and a core Redskin in Smoot. |
Re: Samari Rolle??
I would agree it's a wash "statistically" but I don't see Rolle being the team leader that Smoot has been over the years AND isn't he older than Smoot or no?
|
Re: Samari Rolle??
Smoot is 26, Rolle is 28 I think.
|
Re: Samari Rolle??
Ahh OK, then not so bad. I still am clinging to hopes Smoot will stay but it's not looking good unless all this is is rhetoric.
|
Re: Samari Rolle??
I really don't get this move. What happened to keeping our core guys?
|
Re: Samari Rolle??
For real. Of all of the off-season happenings (with the exception of Coles), this move is making the least sense.
|
Re: Samari Rolle??
If we can give Samari Rolle a 15 million signing bonus, then why can't we give Smoot the same? If not, at least offer him 13 million or something. Theres gotta be more to this. Either Smoot is asking for an insane bonus, or the Defensive Coaches feel like they're better off with Rolle instead of Smoot.
I still don't get it, and probably won't until next season. If Rolle comes in has a Pro Bowl year, then I won't complain. |
Re: Samari Rolle??
Hell, if we're going to go with this approach we might as well try and get John Abraham, Mushin Muhammed and more. I mean of course the Redskins would be better off with THESE players so why aren't we going after them. :P
I mean seriously why do an "apples for apples" trade unless someone is doing some seriously shading dealings. I feel like the Redskins are trying to screw Smoot. |
Re: Samari Rolle??
I really don't get this move. What happened to keeping our core guys?
There was always a catch though, we want to keep guys at the right price. I guess Smoot has priced himself out of our range, or Williams views Rolle as a better fit. It's probably a combo of the two. |
Re: Samari Rolle??
I can't get enough how the "team leaders" get treated on this team. Again, it's sending a TERRIBLE message to the team and the rest of the league.
|

Thats exactly what I'm thinking. I wonder what kind of bonus Smoot is looking for? 16 million? Or the coaches feel like all hes worth is a 10-12 million dollar signing bonus. |
Re: Samari Rolle??
If that's the case I would agree with Williams' assessment. I would hate to see him acting like that, just as I would hate to see the Redskins letting 1-2 million get in the way of retaining Smoot. I wish we had some more details on the talks.
