Favorite Finds: Restaurants

So I'd like this to be a thread dedicated to holes in the walls, or places that you went to on a whim that ended up being great (or horrible).

For people in the Metro area, I went to Brookland Grill on 12th street. Hole in the wall but I had the best burger I've had in awhile! Topped with a fried egg. It was ridiculous.

skinsfaninok 10-15-2012 03:32 PM

Place in biloxi ms called Burger Burger is ridiculous good. I love all kinds of food so I'd go all day long on this lol

simmies in columbia, md. really good wings, open til 3 am every night but closed on sunday. be careful what time you go there, any time i've gone late at night, i've been approached in the parking lot, it usually goes something like this:

loiterer #1: "you want to buy some weed?"

me: "no, i'm good."

loiterer #1: "do you have any weed to sell?"

me: "no" (i don't feel like getting robbed tonight)

loiterer #2: "yeah he do!" (loiterers #3, #4, and #5 come out of the darkness)

loiterer #1: "come on, man!"

me: "have a good night, fellas"

I work right down the street from this joint and have been there 3 times. First time I went there the burger tasted great, almost reminiscent of how Five Guys does their burgers. The next two times I went there it tasted like the mayo on the burger had been left out for several days, it was so nasty. Completely ruined it. Don't know what to think now, but I haven't been back since.

R&R Taqueria has the best, most authentic tacos in the area. They're just like the ones I used to eat when I lived in Mexico City. It's just off 95 in Elkridge, MD, so I get them everytime I head north and on my way back.

Re: Favorite Finds: Restaurants

Here's my list of good eats.

Melting Pot Pizza - Front Royal, VA
Thin crust, great sauce, and at times a pretty rough crowd. What's not to love? I grew up on this pizza, so I may be a bit biased. It's not everyone's cup of tea.

Skinny's Place - Anna Maria Island, FL
Burgers and fries. Walk right in off the beach. Don't worry about shoes or covering up. Anna Maria Island has become our go to vacation spot. This has become one of our go to food spots on the Island.

Duffy's Tavern - Anna Maria Island, FL
See Skinny's Place description.

Hula Hut - Austin, TX
I was in Austin for a few days back in the Spring, and this place was great. The beautiful weather probably has something to do with how I'm remembering this place. Available outdoor seating right on the lake.

Buz and Neds Real Barbeque - Richmond, VA
Conveniently located just down the road from where the Richmond Flying Squirrels play. Best pulled pork sandwich I've ever had. We stop in any time we are in/near/around Richmond. Admittedly, it's pretty well known now, but it's not a chain, and it's great.

Lucky 12 Tavern - Nags Head, NC
Good little hole in the wall bar/restaurant at the beach. Good place for sports. Good food.

Cosmo's Pizzeria - Southern Shores, NC
Best pizza on the OBX, in my opinion. Lots of locals in here, which is always a good sign.

BBQ Exchange - Gordonsville, VA
Very nice BBQ joint. Very clean and new. Good BBQ and great sauces. Can get crowded on the weekend.

on the mexican note, this place is locally regarded as the most authentic mexican food.

clarksville, md
El Azteca - Fine Mexican Cuisine

i didn't know any better until i took my gf there. when she asked for horchata and was told that they don't have it, she knew they weren't legit. she pointed out several other things throughout the meal. my gf is from sonora, so that's the style she was comparing it to.

all that being said, the food is good, just not authentic mexican. we've never come across an authentic mexican restaurant that didn't serve horchata in addition to other types of agua frescas, and never came across one in hoard county.

the city i live in is 80% latino

I haven't tried the mall location, but the original one is inside a gas station, which makes it feel even more hole-in-the-wall authentic. Let me know if the mall one is good.

Panda, I didn't see if they have horchata. I'm a big apple soda guy, so I always get that of cane sugar Coke with my Mexican food.

My only complaint was that they didn't have their al pastor meat on a spit, but other than that everything was spot on. I met the owner, who is from Mexico city and goes down regularly to shop for spices and chiles they use in the restaurant. You know how some flavors just bring back memories, biting into their tacos took me back to the DF. the Huaraches are good, too.

It'ss generally a boring place here but people do know how to cook! That's why a group of ladies in PA could easily be mistaken for the Eagles' offensive line.

There's a GREAT Amish/Dutch buffet in Lancaster called Good N Plenty.

GREAT food. There's usually about an hour wait and you have to take a number, it's that popular. They have Amish craft shops to look at while you wait so it's not bad.

Good 'N Plenty Restaurant & Bakery Lancaster County, PA

I bet dmek25 knows it.

Another of my local favorites is the Famous Hot Weiner in Hanover, PA. Yeah, yeah, a hot dog shop? A damn good hot dog shop! They've been around about 100 years.

To be honest it is not great food (no offense MD; really) it is just good down home cooking. People out there think it is the bomb but if they went to NOVA and sampled more diverse foods they see it ain't all that great.

IMO American cuisine for the most part is boring. Give me Thai, Indian, Mexican, etc....any day over Apple Pie and Fried Chicken.

That's the place. We have season passes to Dutch Wonderland this year (was a gift), so we're there a lot...DW, not the restaurant.

I should have mentioned that in my post...it's right down the road from the park.
