3 Non-Star Players We Need To Step Up In 2013

I should preface this by defining who I define as non-star players. That list includes: Griff, Morris, Trent, Monty, Garcon, Fletcher, Rak, Kerrigan, etc.

The players I'm looking for here are guys that could seriously help the team by continuing to develop or showing improvement next season.

My 3:

Josh Morgan- felt we spent a little more than I would have liked in FA, and while he certainly had a lot of receptions, I'd like to see him targeted more next year, especially in the end zone.

Perry Riley- given the uncertainty regarding Fletch's future, and the likelihood that we will need to draft a quality replacement in the come years, it would be nice to see more steps forward next year so we aren't hunting for two ILB's. Personally thought he played well yesterday.

Josh Wilson- Was great in 2011, certainly showed less in 2012. If we plan on cutting DeAngelo, my guess is that we draft a CB early (I really like Poyer) and look at a cheaper option in FA. He really needs to step up on a secondary unit that needs much improvement.

Re: 3 Non-Star Players We Need To Step Up In 2013

Hankerson needs to stop dropping the ball at the worst times. Always seems to be drive-killing or in the end zone.

Meriweather needs to find a way to get on the field. His impact was huge for that one game he played.

Crawford needs to be our #1 return man and it would be great to see him step up his CB play too, maybe to be a possible starter in the future.

Re: 3 Non-Star Players We Need To Step Up In 2013

So your examples of non-star players are guys like Griff and Morris? I thought by non-star you meant a guy who starts, but could be performing better. Like a Tyler Polumbus for example.

As far as your list goes, maybe we already have Fletcher's replacement on the roster. I liked what I saw out of Keenan Robinson earlier this year before he got hurt.

There has to be a typo in the OP, otherwise who exactly are consider the stars on this team?

while I disagree with CUTTING HALL ...i do NOT disagree, at all, with drafting the best corner we can with our round 2 pick if one is there.

Fair enough I was a little generous with my definition of stars. And isn't Robinson an OLB?

Hi everybody Im new to the board but... I always visit especially game days... but I think we need to let hankerson and morgan go... yes they are big and can block but we need another game changer on the field with pierre... I think we should target Jennings in th e offseason

Speaking of non stars - wtf is up with Ryan Kerrigan?
He doesnt seem to know who has the ball and moves around like a pregnant albatross.

He got exposed against Seattle. Ran right at him and let him make a play against the option and he was beat down.

When I saw Monty on the same list as Morris and Griff I wasn't sure if you were calling them stars or non-stars. Monty is alright, but he's not a world beater. In fact I'd list him as someone who could put in some work this offseason too.

And Keenan Robinson was playing inside this year, I do believe. I can't verify that though, so I might be wrong. As far as guys that need to step up, I'd put Robinson on this list if Fletcher retires.

My single request for this offseason is that Madieu Williams retire, or get released. He shouldn't be playing any more.

Re: 3 Non-Star Players We Need To Step Up In 2013

Id go with

1. Helu - hasnt justified the move up to get him. Has the hands and speed to be that 3rd down/change of pace back.
2. Hankerson - Shows flashes, but still needs to the play the game faster.
3. Wilson - Contract year and was a disappointment most of this year. Gave up huge plays.

Monkeydad 01-07-2013 12:42 PM

Re: 3 Non-Star Players We Need To Step Up In 2013

I'm not as down on Wilson or even Hall as most of you seem to be.

Wilson made some huge plays for us this year. Those TDs given up...would they have been TDs with any start-quality safeties behind the CBs? I blame the lack of safeties on most of the big plays we gave us this season.

Hall played incredible down the stretch for us. If he seal up the holes in the safety positions, I think Hall and Wilson are a more-than-adequate CB tandem.

Doesn't mean we should ignore the position for upgrades if we can get a top CB in the draft (unlikely without early-round picks) or FA though, but I'd rather address safety and RT before we make any decisions on Hall or Wilson.

I think a lot of fans underestimate Monty. According to folks that know a heck of a lot more than us here, he was a very good lineman in 2012.

skinsfaninok 01-07-2013 12:59 PM

1. Hank - he's just not been what we though he would be. I'll give him one more season.

2. Helu - I just don't see him being a big factor anymore but hopefully he steps up and proves his worth.

3. Crawford - want to see him become the number 2 CB

Ruhskins 01-07-2013 01:01 PM

Re: 3 Non-Star Players We Need To Step Up In 2013

Hank just needs to be more consistent period, hopefully he'll be like James Jones with the Packers (a bit slow in learning how to do away with the dropsies).

Re: 3 Non-Star Players We Need To Step Up In 2013

Not sure what Hank's problem is, lack of focus maybe? No heart over the middle? He takes his eyes off the ball before he secures the catch too often.

Neild. I'd like to see him take over NT so that we can kick Cofield outside, which is where he really should be.

TE) N. Paul , not because I don't think he is not good . I would like to see him become so good , Shanny has too get him on the field. Any of our WR's to become more consistant . Hopefully , Jackson , Merriweather , Crawford , Gomes and Minnifield can get healthy and make impacts in 2013 .

Contrary to belief Albatross do not get pregnant but spontaneously reproduce.

To answer thread question I would say Lumberjack. Although he played well filling in for Fred Davis, it would be nice to get more offensive TE production especially since FDs future on this team has not been secured.

Kerrigan needs to step up. He already said postgame that he needs to work on his pass rushing moves. I'm glad he knows what he sucks at and that he needs to improve it.

Wilson--he'll be our only returning starting CB. Needs to learn how to defend better in the redzone

Niles Paul--needs to get bigger and catch. Cooley won't be back; no news on Fred Davis if he will or won't be back; Paulsen is a FA; so Paul will definitely be on the roster so get on it Niles.

Cofield is really very good as a 0 nose tackle. Playing the A gaps gives him very little opportunity to make "big" plays. The same would go for anyone at the position. Not sure he'd offer any additional value elsewhere.

Tom Compton since he'll be penciled in as the starting RT going into minicamps

Keenan Robinson since he's the heir apparent to London Fletcher

Chase Minnifield since I'm rooting for him

and of course...Kirk Cousins

Umm, you want to explain this one to me? I know Kory L is a FA, but we have LeRibeus at LG and Chester at RG. Compton was/is a LT/RT who didn't play at all for us this year and was just recently called off the PS a few weeks back.

Whoops, typo. Thanks corrected it

NYCSkin 01-08-2013 12:39 AM

1. Hankerson. If he's our 2 he needs to show it. We still have a bunch of 3's at receiver but no #2.

2. DeJon Gomes. Is he the starting SS or not. We need to find out or move on.

3. Kirk Cousins. Since I believe he will be our starter for the first 4-8 weeks.

He doesnt seem to know who has the ball and moves around like a pregnant albatross.[/quote]Kerrigan is a nice player who plays with maximum effort and has his moments, but our talent evaluators screwed up again when we traded down from the #10 pick to take Kerrigan at #16 and get additional picks, one of which I believe turned into Hankerson. J.J. Watt was selected #11 and was there for the taking when our original pick came up. Epic fail.
