Damn Lotus really hope you and yours are alright, sounds like the storm did significant damage to your neck of the woods.

Re: Massive tornado hits Mississippi.
Hope everybody is alright. That looked pretty damn huge to me.

Re: Massive tornado hits Mississippi.
Very Scary. From what I hear there are no confirmed deaths, lets hope it stays that way.
Surprisingly, we actually had a record down year in tornadoes last year, but if the beginning of this year is any indication- it's looking like it will be a rough spring. |
Re: Massive tornado hits Mississippi.
Thanks for the concern, guys. I appreciate it. I am fine. But I have several friends who are now homeless because of partially or fully destroyed homes. The building in which I teach and have my office is pretty damaged and some other buildings on campus are wiped out. It is almost impossible to get around town because of all of the trees and power lines down. In places the damage is worse than Katrina and I never thought that I'd be able to say that. But no one, to my knowledge, is dead, so as far as calamities go things could be much worse.

Glad to hear you're OK Lotus! Buildings and homes can eventually be replaced, but lives cannot! |

Glad your ok man. did the town have enough time with the sirons and warnings? That was a huge ass tornado. |
Re: Massive tornado hits Mississippi.
Yeah, the tornado early warning system is helpful. I think that is why the death toll was so minor. People were smart about finding safe places. Plus school has a short Mardi Gras break, so luckily there were few students on campus.

That's good man, living in OK I understand how fast they can come through a town. Did you actually see the twister? Or take video like many did |

Yeah you know what it is like. You live in Tornado Alley whereas I live in Tornado Alley Jr. I did not see the twister myself and I have no video, but there are a bunch of videos on the internet. |

Glad your good. Mardi Gras has saved many college students lives throughout the years. |

He also pushed for aid after Katrina. You can't have it both ways. |

First and foremost, glad you are okay. Second (and I say this in jest) - Why do people live in an alley for Tornados (senior or junior)? I mean, it's a well known natural phenomenon. Who says to themselves "Hey, I know, I will go live in a place called Tornado Alley - I bet nothing bad happens there!!" It's kinda like the old Eddie Murphy routine about living in a haunted house: Parent: "What a nice home. It is in a beautiful neighborhood with good schools, nice people ..." Disembodied Voice: "GET OUT!!!" Parent: "... to bad we gots to go." Again, I kid. Hopefully, normalcy will return soon and the damage can be mended. |

One reason is the cost of living is very good in Oklahoma especially Oklahoma city so it's just one of the risks you take. I've lived Here since 2000 and I've probably only been really worried 3 times about one hitting us. We usually get a tornado that does damage in the metro area maybe once every 3 years or even more so it's really not too horrible. Now northern Oklahoma and Kansas has them much more. |
Re: Massive tornado hits Mississippi.
Joe, I know you were being playful, but to answer your question:
I live here because: 1) I enjoy regularly wearing shorts and t-shirts in January 2) Work. There are not many positions like mine in the entire country, so it is not easy to just move somewhere else. And I have created some new programs here which I would like to nurture. |
Re: Massive tornado hits Mississippi.
Buildings (homes, businesses, etc.) affected by the tornado in my town:
1439 total buildings at least affected 298 destroyed 474 major damage 479 minor damage 188 affected |

The fact that nobody died in the storm is nothing short of a miracle. Kudos to the early warning systems. Lotus- did you know the storm was coming in advance? |
