Redskins Free Agents
So at the request of Chico I started this Redskins Free Agency topic.
My question is, of the players listed below, who do you think will not be resigned? Unrestricted: Linebacker Lorenzo Alexander, tackle Jordan Black, tight end Chris Cooley, tight end Fred Davis, defensive end Kedric Golston, cornerback Cedric Griffin, safety Tanard Jackson, linebacker Bryan Kehl, guard Kory Lichtensteiger, tackle Tyler Polumbus, punter Sav Rocca, safety Madieu Williams and linebacker Chris Wilson. Restricted: Nose tackle Chris Baker, return man Brandon Banks, linebacker Rob Jackson, tight end Logan Paulsen, long-snapper Nick Sundberg, fullback Darrel Young. I think we will not resign Cooley, Tanard Jackson, Bryan Kehl, Madieu Williams and Banks for sure. |
Re: Redskins Free Agents
Have to sign these guys for sure:
Alexander Jackson Davis Lichtensteiger Paulsen Young |
Re: Redskins Free Agents
Is jackson worth 1.29 million. Thats what his tender would cost. If someone wanted him we would get a 7th round pick for him. I think he is worth it, but with our cap situation they may let him walk.
|
Re: Redskins Free Agents
Our absolute top priority is resigning Fred Davis. Its gonna be tricky because of the injury, but think we get something done in the 4 year range with a decent raise. Alexander is a must resign as well. I think Kory L goes, he probably gets starter money somewhere at center/guard.
Id put a second round tender on Jackson and give a small bump to everyone else on the restricted list except Brandon Banks. Jackson could become trade bait, which would work out in out favor. |
Re: Redskins Free Agents
I really want Alexander, Golston, Lichtensteiger, Rocca, and Wilson. I do not want anything spent on Davis. Too much baggage and injury. I think the money could be better spent elsewhere. Polumbus is probably needed but hopefully just for backup money.
|
Re: Redskins Free Agents
T. Jackson can't even step in the building until he's reinstated, and that won't come until 8/31 at the very earliest. Based on that I can't see him coming back.
If we're talking about Rob Jackson, yeah I'd make a push to keep him here. |
Re: Redskins Free Agents
If it came to a choice between keeping Fred Davis or Lorenzo Alexander, I would choose Alexander. The skins played without Davis most of the season and did fine, Alexander is huge on ST and a very valuable player who can play different positions and most of all a class act.

Re: Redskins Free Agents
I'm doing what I have to do to keep Davis here.
He's a big time playmaker and even though we survived without him the offense is so much more dangerous with him in there. Paulsen is ok as a backup but I wouldn't want him as the full time guy. |
Re: Redskins Free Agents
Our offense is so much more effective with Davis. He should come with a large discount, considering he is hurt and the suspension thing. I am thinking that there will not be a huge market for him. We will have the upper hand, because we know him.
|
Fred is a very good player, when healthy he's a top 10 TE. We should keep him for sure. Paulsen just doesn't do as much
|
Re: Redskins Free Agents
I agree we have to do whatever we can to get Davis back. That being said, I don't see a 4 year deal. With his injury, I can see a one year "show me what you got" contract before we fork out a long-term deal. Or maybe a 2 year deal like what the Packers did with Finley.
In other news, I think Rob Jackson needs to stay and so does Zo Al. Is there anyone's contract we can restructure to get a few more dolla's until wel get out of Mara Cap Hell? |
Re: Redskins Free Agents
I see us offering Lichtensteiger a ''cheap'' deal as a take it or leave it deal, because we do have LeRibeus and Gettis behind him who looked great and have potential.
Fred Davis is going to get a similar type of deal as Lichtensteiger; a take it or leave it, since he is coming off an achilles. Plus this draft has lots of TEs much like the 2010 draft. Rob Jackson you have to resign because Orakpo hasn't been too healthy in the past, and Rob is great depth and smarter and better in coverage than Orakpo. Alexander is a great ST, but hes going to want a fairly big deal for a backup since he is a pro bowler. I keep saying this, but he may be gone to Pittsburgh. I remember reading somewhere with Fletchers contract, it would be better if he retired and saved us some money and gave that money to Lorenzo so he could play in some MLB packages and so could Keenan. Paulsen, well you got to keep at least one of these TEs. I've already thrown out James Casey in FA who is a FB/TE. Paulsen is a better blocker than Fred Davis. Paulsen is a cheaper TE than FD, so gun to my head I'd rather have Paulsen, Casey, Draft Pick TE, (and maybe Niles). Cedric Griffin should be resigned to compete in camp incase the draft pick CBs/other FA CBs don't work out. Sav Rocca yes, however if in the 7th round we choose to get Brad Wing, I would be completely fine with that. He, like Rocca is an Australian who can boom the ball, and run. Darrell Young, yes we must resign the 3rd best fullback in the NFL according to nfldraftscout. Ditto for Sundberg. Williams, Banks, Jackson, Kehl, and all the other guys should start looking to go elsewhere. |
Re: Redskins Free Agents
Matty, I was a bit surprised to see you say cut Lichtensteigher so quickly. What's your opinion about the drop off, if any, from Lich to the rest of our guys on the line who would step up if he's gone? Do we address OLine in FA AND the draft? I know "secondary is a primary" concern.

If we're talking about Rob Jackson, yeah I'd make a push to keep him here.
TJax can't step into ANY NFL building until 8/31, so in the worst case scenario there's no hurry to sign him because likely no one else will. He can't pass a physical without getting in the door. |

All I meant was I could see us moving on in terms of a cap related move. I know Shanny loves him and he's a great fit in this offense, so I also wouldn't be surprised if they make something work with him. Tough to tell right now where we're heading until we start making some cap moves. |
Re: Redskins Free Agents
More concerned about Right Tackle than rather if Kory L stays or not. Gettis, McRib, or Hurt can step in and play at Guard. Monty and Chester had beast years, not concerned about the interior.

I'd imagine we bring back Polumbus on a cheap deal and let him battle it out with Compton and/or a rookie RT. |
Re: Redskins Free Agents
Heard Chris Russell on ESPN 980 yesterday. He had a couple intersting points:
- It's unlikely we franchise Davis again. Coming off the injury and suspension, the franchise tag amount is probably too high. He suspects they let Davis test out the FA market, then decide if they want to bring him back. - In general terms he thinks it will be a very quiet offseason, partly due to the cap penalty. His thinking was they might take a small step back this year, with the idea of taking 2 or 3 steps forward in 2014. |

After all we did win 10 games and the division. Get healthy and build off that and add a couple of new pieces. |
Re: Redskins Free Agents
The Skins really don't have much cap space this year, but it would be nice if they can sign a free safety like Jairus Byrd or Dashon Goldson.
|
Re: Redskins Free Agents
Of our own free agents, I hope we at least resign Lich, Sundberg, Alexander, Rocca, Davis, and Young.

Good point, I forgot about TJax, he looked good last preseason. |
Re: Redskins Free Agents
They need to change the name from free agents because theyre sure not free.
|
Re: Redskins Free Agents
I hope we keep Fred, but I wouldn't be shocked if we let him walk. Just wouldn't shock me. Wouldn't be shocked if we cut Adam Carriker either.

Realized I meant to say Rich Campbell not Chris Russell. Always mix those 2 names up. |
Re: Redskins Free Agents
A good point was made on Sirius XM NFL Radio the other morning. With the salary cap stagnant, big name players are still going to be outdoing each other for contracts, where is the money going to come from? The middle man of the NFL. Middle tier players aren't going to get the money they got in past years IMO because of this. Add onto this lack of payday for free agents the fact that although there is not top tier talent in the draft, many positions are very deep. TE for example. I can see Davis trying to see what he can get, not get very good offers because teams can't afford it or want to draft a cheap rookie instead in a deep class. If Davis is not happy with what he finds, which I don't think he will be, I see him resigning with us. That's not even mentioning the injury that will scare some teams away. Maybe I'm just talking myself into keeping him. I hope get him back though.

Re: Redskins Free Agents
Is there a Fred Davis in this year's draft? A second round tender for under 2M doesn't seem like a ton of money for a player in this league: Jackson is worth it.
|
Re: Redskins Free Agents
I dont see a big market for Fred and coming off knee surgery we have leverage for a good deal. I dont think it will be for huge money, but a nice raise. I think its a no brainer to want to keep a top 10 TE.

You say there is no big market for him but in the same breath say he is a top ten TE????? In league were the TE position is at all time high. Come on Bro. |

Come on Bro.
well coming off a achilles injury with a deep group of TEs on the market is why I said that...here is how walterfootball rates the TE: WalterFootball.com: 2013 NFL Free Agents - Tight Ends or 2013 NFL free agents: Top tight ends available - SBNation.com I think we will have the advantage signing him. |

I think we will have the advantage signing him.
Also there is the "puff puff pass" factor. Other top TE's don't have two strikes already. |
Fair enough i forgot about his drug issue

Apparently a significant amount more than what we offered him. I'd love to know what the offer was. He said he'd give the Skins a discount if it was close but that didn't appear to be the case this time. |

Well there is only one way to find out. Not impressed going to the media like that. Im more interested what other teams would offer, I dont think its that big. |
Re: Redskins Free Agents
We cant afford to dick around with guys like this this year.
Hes gotta give us a deal or he can shuffle off to Buffalo. |
We cant afford to dick around with guys like this this year.

(No Mathieu pun intended) The man said he would take less to stay, but for all we know we offered him the vet minimum. Need to wait until the numbers become available to pass judgement. I wouldn't want to play for the vet min either if I just went to the pro bowl. |
Re: Redskins Free Agents
Alexander's last deal was 3 years 3.8 million. For a special teams ace/backup LB turning 30 this year I wouldn't offer him more than 1.5/yr at the most.
