Sam Huff

After 31 years Sam Huff is stepping down as color commentator for the Redskins but still plans to attend a few of the pre game shows with Larry & Sonny.

Long overdue. Hope he enjoys retirement, and now he can sit back and watch games without having to do a "job".

Honestly they need to clean house. Sonny has some moments of lucidness but can sound like a moron more often then not. I have never been a big fan of Larry for some reason.

To me we should have the best broadcast team in the NFL but we are middle of the road or bad at best.

As long as Frank Herzog was there yes , once he was forced out for Larry Michael then you could see Sam Huff struggle with his broadcast duties. Still one hell of a nice guy and a hell of a football player, best of luck to him and his family.

IS? Or WAS? In the '80's he was awesome. IMO The last few years, he has been painful. Sometimes it was like he had no idea about the game on the field (like talking about what a great play a defensive player made when we actually were on offense). And he would launch into series of meaningless non-sequiturs.

Back in the day, there was none better. He was eloquent, insightful, and sometimes really funny.

Geez, I thought I've been pretty vocal for the past several years of my distaste for Huff. He was even lousy during the later Herzog years. I mean really, how many times did I do a smack down and mention Huff? His departure is looooooong overdue

So much for my attempt at a sarcastic post

I agree. Sam & Sonny need to to go (well Sonny now). I mean great Redskins, I'm sure great guys, but they're not good anymore... I'm not a huge fan of Larry, but I don't think he's anything particularly bad either. He's an OK play by play guy, but just not my cup of tea. I think he might benefit from some newer guys in the booth though. I'd like to see Doc go up top, someone else replace Sonny and then new sideline guy.

We'll see though.

I'd rework the whole thing. I don't much care for Doc. Nice guy but something about his work seems bleh to me. I'd really like to see it be someone who isn't just spewing slick niceties the whole time.

I'd like to see Tim Brant of ABC 7 News be the new commentator and replace old Sonny with someone young who recently played in the NFL/Redskins. I was thinking Randle El, but he still has some work to do.

I know I might be the bad guy here but Larry Michael isn't at all bad. He's not worse than Herzog was. I can't say I understand anyone's dislike of his work. I see no reason to dump him.

I know your joking, but I feel that Portis needs to spend way more time (like 4-5 years in the studio) before he can go out on the radio. He's still a ways to go to even pass Randle El. I was thinking Ken Harvey or...LaVar...

I know Herzog quite well. Consider him a friend. Don't know Michael as well. When I have met him, I haven't been the biggest fan. That said, when it comes to on air work...I totally agree

For one, everyone in the booth can't have the same personality. I like Michael but, with the Sonny and Sam is was kinda weak. I like Doc, bring him in the booth. Bring a female in the mix too.

I mean everyone dislikes him because he is not Herzog. That's about it. I know he sort of engineered himself into that job and got Frank canned but that isn't like common knowledge so I know it isn't that.

He's not bad at all. Some people will just always hate the guy because he replaced Herzog.

JoeRedskin 06-24-2013 03:47 PM

Re: Sam Huff

I am not a fan of Michael's work outside the booth - his cable shows are pretty painful "suck-up" shows. In the booth, on game day, I don't have any problem with his work. He will never be brutally critical, but then neither was Herzog.

Doc as a replacement would work for me b/c he really is unafraid to pull his punches while at the same time being an unabashed Skin's fan.

Probably time for Sonny to go also. With his drinking buddy gone, I expect he will move on in the next year or two.

I think Larry is OK during "down" points in the game. Like if he's calling an average play he does just fine. Its on the "big plays" where I've been underwhelmed by him. For the most part, he's been calling some pretty bad football; so its hard to really hold much against him... but I don't know. He's OK.

Could the radio really stand to have 2 huge homers like Larry and Joey T in the same booth? Should be a FCC regulation against it.

Truth be told, and Frank would never admit this, but Herzog wanted out. He didn't like the way it was done and he enjoyed hanging out with Sonny (not as much Sam). But he wasn't really enjoying it anymore and his disinterest was pretty obvious to those (myself included) who worked with him during the week

Sonny, Sam, & Frank were really good and fun to listen to. When Frank left something changed and Sonny & Sam didnt seem as good anymore. Maybe Frank knew how to bring out the best in them and make them look good.

I dont have a problem with Larry M, he's a solid play by play guy. I'm not sure I could stand Doc in the booth as his cliches get old fast. I dont think I could stand Joe T either. Maybe D. Green would be interested.

Re: Sam Huff

I think the reason I dislike Larry so much is because everytime I hear him talk, he acts like we are fielding a team of All-Pro's. And whenever I hear one of his calls when we have a big play (like on NFLN highlights/etc.) it just doesn't sound good for whatever reason. Either way, the only time I hear him is on the highlight calls, so it's not a big deal to me.

I agree. I don't know what it is either but his voice and what I imagine as a redskins commentator are two different things.

Love his High energy calls on a TD or outstanding play...

Re: Sam Huff

I'm a big fan of Larry Michael.

OF COURSE he's going to be over-the-top optimistic, the team pays him to be. I think he's a good game commentator and I try to catch Redskins Nation every morning on CSN while eating breakfast.

I'd rather listen to someone with Larry's love and almost blind optimism for the team than someone like Lavar or Brian Mitchell complain about the team.

Sometimes, things have gone so badly, he helps keep you sane with his attitude. He had nothing but faith in Cousins all year and when RGIII went down, he wasn't proclaiming the end of the world and look, Kirk actually lived up to Larry Michael's praises.
