Pete Prisco's mock (cbs's main NFL reporter)

wow, he has mike williams going 15th! troy williamson going 7th and derrick johnson going 14th!

Pete Prisco
Prisco likes QB Alex Smith from Utah with the top overall pick. Like Judge, Prisco feels Auburn's Ronnie Brown is a no-brainer with the second overall pick. going to Arizona with the No. 8 overall pick
1 SF Alex Smith, QB
2 MIA Ronnie Brown, RB
3 CLE Aaron Rodgers, QB
4 CHI Braylon Edwards
5 TB Carnell Williams, RB
6 TEN Antrel Rolle, CB
7 MIN Troy Williamson, WR
8 ARI Cedric Benson, RB
9 WAS Adam Jones, CB
10 DET Dan Cody, DE
11 DAL Shawne Merriman, DE

Re: Pete Prisco's mock (cbs's main NFL reporter)

This is pretty interesting. Normally I would say that someone having Mike Williams going number 15 and getting past TB, Min, Was, Dal, SD, and Car is crazy and doesnt know shit. But his other player placements are pretty accurate. Reggie Brown and Mike Patterson probably won't sniff the first round, but other than that, he is pretty much spot on. I don't know though, I definitely don't buy that Mike Williams is the number four WR. It's good to see that some people think he isn't a top 5 lock though. It gives me a little optimism in this somewhat downer of an offseason.

Re: Pete Prisco's mock (cbs's main NFL reporter)

I cant see us passing up Mike Williams at #9 there is no way, unless we sign Plaxico Burress. I do like Adam "Pac Man" Jones though.

FRPLG 03-15-2005 08:23 AM

Re: Pete Prisco's mock (cbs's main NFL reporter)

hmmm...well this is either genius or crap. Every mock I have seen since the combine has Williams going top 10 and mostly before 9. I have not seen one mock EVER saying Williams would go after White. I hope he has some inside info and Williams can go that low. Trade down and pick him there. I like Jones wel enough but he is not going to make a big difference for us this coming year. I like Williams a lot more.

FRPLG 03-15-2005 08:38 AM

Re: Pete Prisco's mock (cbs's main NFL reporter)

cbs's other nfl reporter has a completely different take...
1 SF Aaron Rodgers, QB
2 MIA Ronnie Brown, RB
3 CLE Braylon Edwards, WR
4 CHI Cedric Benson, RB
5 TB Cadillac Williams, RB
6 TEN Antrel Rolle, CB
7 MIN Derrick Johnson, LB
8 ARI Alex Smith, QB
9 WAS Adam Jones, CB
10 DET Marcus Spears, DE
11 DAL Shawne Merriman, DE
12 SD Mike Williams, WR
13 HOU Alex Barron, T
14 CAR Heath Miller, TE
15 KC Carlos Rogers, CB
16 NO Thomas Davis, S
17 CIN Travis Johnson, DT
18 MIN Troy Williamson, WR
19 STL Jammal Brown, T
20 DAL Marcus Johnson, OT
21 JAC Erasmus James, DE
22 BAL Mark Clayton, WR
23 SEA Dan Cody, DE
24 GB Channing Crowder, LB
25 DEN David Pollack, DE
26 NYJ Anttaj Hawthorne, DT
27 ATL Khalif Barnes, OT
28 SD Matt Roth, DE
29 IND Barrett Ruud, LB
30 PIT Shaun Cody, DT
31 PHI Demarcus Ware, LB/DE
32 NE Kevin Burnett, LB

Re: Pete Prisco's mock (cbs's main NFL reporter)

With all due respect to Prisco, the only way Williams makes it past #12 is if San Diego trades out of the pick. Williams is the prototype receiver for a Schottenheimer team - a big target with great hands. He is also trying to either increase the trade value of Brees and give Rivers the tools needed to succeed, or solidify Brees as a force in his division. Williams will absolutely not get past him, if he makes it there at all.

Damn now I don't know who I'd take if pac man and Williams were still on the board.

Re: Pete Prisco's mock (cbs's main NFL reporter)

Williams is a better football player straight up. That should be the deciding factor. Take the better player. There are knocks against Pacman's instincts and positioning. Apparently he gets turned around some. This is all correctable but I imagine he's gonna get torched as a rookie some. The only knock on WIlliams is speed. Speed is the knock on just about every WR coming out. There are only like 3 legitimate speedsters who will end up being siginificant players in any given year and this year is no different. Year in and year out WRs get knocked for speed and it doesn't end up mattering much. Williams is a beast. Pacman is a nice player but he is not the Williams level. He is over valued simply because he plays CB.

Re: Pete Prisco's mock (cbs's main NFL reporter)

Agreed,

Sometimes, people rely on workout stats two heavily. A big wide receiver with great instincts is worth it. Does anyone know what TO ran in the 40?

BrudLee 03-15-2005 10:08 AM

Re: Pete Prisco's mock (cbs's main NFL reporter)

Here's how you should gauge Williams:

Write down the top 5 receivers in the league. Take into account anything you want - statistics, impact on their team, leadership - whatever.

How many of the people on your list are known primarily for their speed? I've got Randy Moss, Terrell Owens, Marvin Harrison, Torry Holt, and Muhsin Muhammad. You could have any of a dozen other receivers, but that's my list (in no order). Though they are all fast, their speed isn't the defining characteristic of their play. They run great routes. They provide big secure targets. They don't drop balls. They get in the end zone. They force defenses to adjust to their presence.

The difference between 4.4 and 4.5 seconds isn't nearly as big as the difference between a catch and a bobble. Mike Williams doesn't bobble.

Re: Pete Prisco's mock (cbs's main NFL reporter)

I'd be shocked if Williams lasted that long.

FRPLG 03-15-2005 10:17 AM

Re: Pete Prisco's mock (cbs's main NFL reporter)

Exactly BL and heybigstar. Williams is a beast by all accounts. I have not heard one person say he is overrated. He dominated in college and barring health issues he should be a force in the NFL. I just hope we don't over think this one and go a different direction. If he is available to us he will certainly be the most talented player availabale. It's not like we don't have a need for a WR like him. He would fit in nicely. I am worried he won't make it to us anyways so then maybe all this talk is worthless.

Re: Pete Prisco's mock (cbs's main NFL reporter)

Id be amazed if Williams lasts beyond the top 10.

Every mock i see at the minute has us taking Pac Man Jones

Re: Pete Prisco's mock (cbs's main NFL reporter)

Since we just lost Smoot it's natural for people to assume we'll take a corner, but I still wouldn't rule out a WR.

redwagonskins 03-15-2005 11:18 AM

Re: Pete Prisco's mock (cbs's main NFL reporter)

BL, one thing to think about with SD is that they feel they have three posession receivers in MCardell, Eric Parker and Antonio Gates. They may be looking to stretch the field with a burner or getting a CB to shore up their D.

redwagonskins 03-15-2005 11:31 AM

Re: Pete Prisco's mock (cbs's main NFL reporter)

And they have Kasim Osgood 6'5" who they are high on. don't thin Williams speed impressed anyone so teams looking for a posession type guy may grab him but a team in need of stretching the field might not.

heybigstar 03-15-2005 12:57 PM

Re: Pete Prisco's mock (cbs's main NFL reporter)

Is Mike Wiliams not capable of stretching the field? i know we have Moss and Patten with speed, but i feel like Williams could thrive catching throws in the center of the field and using his agility to gain yac.

Skins aren't taking Mike Willams. Bet on that!

diehardskin2982 03-15-2005 01:59 PM

Re: Pete Prisco's mock (cbs's main NFL reporter)

Skins will take Williams if he's there at 9. The only way Minnesota will not take him is if they get plaxico. KC will not take williams they're going defense all the way, they may even move up if they want Pac man bad enough, possibly with us. Especially if we add C. Brown, and he anywhere as good as he used to be we could put a vet or a second rounder back at cb and still be successful.

Re: Pete Prisco's mock (cbs's main NFL reporter)

yeah I'm leaning towards Williams at this point. I don't watch college football, but the film I've seen of this guy is amazing.

e16bball 03-15-2005 02:50 PM

Re: Pete Prisco's mock (cbs's main NFL reporter)

Williams is just such an excellent fit with our current WRs. Keeps Moss or Patten or Jacobs from being stuck in the role Coles was last year, which wouldn't fit any of their games.

I see the two teams I'm worried about as TB and Minnesota, as diehard said above. This is based mostly on things I have heard about them being in love with him. Based just on looking at their teams, I would take Cadillac as TB and Derrick Johnson as Minnesota, but they both supposedly loved Mike Williams.

Of course that could all be bullshit they are spreading to try to get fools like us to move up and get Mike when we wouldn't have to.

I"d rather have mike williams but we do need some youth at cornerback.

BigSKINBauer 03-15-2005 03:10 PM

Re: Pete Prisco's mock (cbs's main NFL reporter)

y is Derrick Johnson so low i mean i would rather have a good middle if he could play cause we really don't got back ups there and if we get brown we would have Brown, Griffin, daniels washington johnson and arrington oh yea THE SALVATING SALAVE'A up front we would be unstoppable and we could put pierce in, i think more than CB we need a mlb UNLESS Barrow is GGGGGHOOOOD to go and get 100 + tackles again!

I would also take Mike williams CBs are so hard to rate and i would like a TE........like a kid in a candy shop!

I agree on William's I have almost the same feeling about him as I did Taylor a year ago, Taylor's workout was less than stellar to say the least, but I knew that was irrelevant for him he is a football player, William's combine last year was better than his combine this year a year off can slow you down once he get's back into the flow of a daily practices his speed will increase, I think he will be on a level with Taylor as far as WR's go, the guy has the best pair of hand's you will ever see. If we want another fast WR to stretch the D we will have that opportinity later in te draft there's going to be some unpolished burner's we can take a chance on, but William's has a chance to be something special in this league of the likes the NFL may not have seen up till now, just like Taylor.

Yeah... it sounds ridiculous to say but you just know in your gut when a guy can play and when he is hype. I was estatic when we drafted Champ, Lavar and Taylor. I had a good feeling about Smoot too. On the other hand I thought Samuels was hyped a bit and Ramsey was uber hyped. I'd say based on their careers so far my gut has been good. Not that I know any better than anyone else but I think most people just KNEW Taylor and Arrington could were gonna be beast. They could've gone to the combine or their workouts and crapped a duck and everyone knew they'd be beast. I just get that feeling with Williams like nobody else in the draft. Edwards is gonna be good but I think Williams is gonna be the best player in this draft when we look back in 5 years. I know some of you have this same gut feeling I just know it.
How would you compare him to Moss?
He doesn't. He compares more to Michale Irvin, Cris Carter, Terrell Owens and Roy Williams. Bigger guys with ok speed who knew were just good receivers. Good hands, good routes, great body position, great strength. He even handled the entire situation involving trying to go pro and ending up getting banned by the NCAA very maturely which is also something to note.

Adam Jones is small, he is a play maker but spears would make such a difference in the defense because we wouldn't have to blitz on 3rd and long to get pressure. I like spears, and pollack the most but i would be ok with Jones.

Todd Franz has just signed for GreenBay today so I would say that would rule him out of being on a Redskins avatar.
Your looking a replacement player for "playmakers", my suggestion would be (if he is not already used) ... Shawn Springs - the guy made a lot of big plays last year!!!
Champ who?
