Final Cuts Looming - any surprises on the horizon
As has been said many times this off-season, it's all about stability. Our offensive and defensive coaching staff have been here forever in NFL terms. We brought back 21 of 22 starters, and alot of the depth as well. But right now there are 90ish players on the roster, and in 7 days that number will be 53.
Do you see any surprises coming out of Redskins Park in the next week? I could see a long term deal with Trent, to free up the necessary cap room for the season. I could see us going bare bones at receiver(5-6 only) to give us more flexibility on the defensive side. Does anyone have a shocking surprise that they really think could happen? Re: Final Cuts Looming - any surprises on the horizon
Pat White will start at QB.
More seriously, I'd be stunned if we kept more than 5 WR's since we are keeping 4 TE's. |
Re: Final Cuts Looming - any surprises on the horizon
Wilson could be cut but I wouldnt think that would be a good move. LeRiebus, McRib or Grimace whatever you call him, maybe a surprise cut, but I think we may keep him.
|
Re: Final Cuts Looming - any surprises on the horizon
Well I don't think Wilson, LeRibeus, or even Stallworth getting cut would be all that big a surprise
Maybe Chris Thompson gets cut, with the hope that they can stash him on the practice squad. I suppose that may be a slight surprise Pat White makes the team until we fully know that Griff and/or Cousins are ready? That's possible I suppose I'll have to think about a big surprise |

I think Wilson might be cut. Amerson's showing quite a bit of potential, and could start this year. Then there's Hall and Crawford. Wilson's only good for depth at this point. Pat White's a guy who could be a surprise cut. :joecool: Maybe Aldrick Robinson gets cut? I think the coaches really like him, so it's doubtful. |
Re: Final Cuts Looming - any surprises on the horizon
I guess the 'surprise' would be Josh Wilson. Has he even played during the preseason?
I would still be surprised if we cut LeRibeus. Even though he's played awful. |

I don't see any big surprises.

Meanwhile Tandler thinks otherwise: Rich Tandler @Rich_TandlerCSN 4h No. Couldn't afford him then, can't afford him now. RT @rwj64: IF Seahawks cut Winfield do you think Shanahan might pick him up? Expand Jeremy Dean @JDizzee 3h @Rich_TandlerCSN @rwj64 if Wilson isn't in the future plans, why not cut him & bring in Winfield (if cut)? Upgrades slot for less money. Expand Rich Tandler @Rich_TandlerCSN 2h @JDizzee How does Winfield cost less money? Wilson took a pay cut. BTW, where is this talk of SEA cutting Winfield come from? Expand Jeremy Dean @JDizzee 2h @Rich_TandlerCSN I don't know cutting ramifications. Thought Wilson was slated for 2mill. Winfield's Seattle deal 1mill + play incentives. Expand Rich Tandler @Rich_TandlerCSN 2h @JDizzee Maybe AW would play for less than Wilson. Still not the way Shanahan usually does things and still doubt SEA cuts him w/$1mm gte. Hide conversation |
Re: Final Cuts Looming - any surprises on the horizon
I'm really not concerned about our cuts..pretty sure there won't be any suprises. What i am hoping for is if someone decides to cut a decent zone blocking RT so we can try to upgrade our Oline by game 5 so RG3 doesn't get killed. Are there any chances of that happening?

I think he's more so saying he'd like to see that. And it could be good for both teams. But nothing really more than that |

I think they're looking to sort of hide him this summer so he can get to the practice squad |

That is helpful! I've been wondering why we've seen so much Keiland and so little Jawan. |
Re: Final Cuts Looming - any surprises on the horizon
I think we will cut Grossman.
|
Re: Final Cuts Looming - any surprises on the horizon
Since Crawford is done (smh), I don't think Wilson gets cut. I've been watching LeRibeus and most plays he looks either unable to reach a guy to block or is simply not driving his man back.
Stallworth cut |

That is exactly what it is seems like, I think Royster and Williams get cut, Thompson will be our Sproles version on 3rd down. |
Re: Final Cuts Looming - any surprises on the horizon
I just finished watching the game I recorded it earlier today. I like what I saw from Pat White. Grossman did have a nice game but do we keep him as insurance? Pat White has something about him I just think we need to find a way to keep him this year. If we do intend to trade Kirk this offseason then we should release Grossman and keep Pat White.
As for the RB position I think the surprise is we keep Keiland Williams and either trade or release Royster. Williams can do the same things as Royster but he can also play FB. I think Chris Thompson may make the 53 man roster as RB/PR/KR. Jamison will be signed to the PS. The WR position is set with Garcon,Hankerson,Morgan,Moss, and Robinson. I think they may keep Briscoe or Lewis , whoever is the better special teams player. I don't see us cutting Josh Wilson we have to many young guys already back there. |
Re: Final Cuts Looming - any surprises on the horizon
I think McRib is out. He definitely gets manhandled at the POA and is damn near useless on the second level. I think he has the talent and build but he's either lazy or not motivated.
Sucks to see Crawford go. Minnifield and Biggers both make roster I think and play nickel/slot. |
Re: Final Cuts Looming - any surprises on the horizon
It's too bad White can't go to the practice squad. I still think he's too limited as a passer to keep over Rex. But I will say for a guy who's been out of football he's played well, he has some value as a read option QB but I don't think he sticks here.

Re: Final Cuts Looming - any surprises on the horizon
Buffalo ought to at least be making inquiries to the Redskins about PW. They are the type of team that would benefit from having him in as a 2nd/3rd qb, and we know Kolb is about useless if he gets hit a couple times.
|
Re: Final Cuts Looming - any surprises on the horizon
How about the Jets? They should be banging down our door for a trade.
We could end up with a Dallas <vomit> Triplets type trade that sets us up for a decade. |

If only Rex could swing us a 1st 2nd and one of his multitude of first round DT's; pick one. Daydream done lol |
Re: Final Cuts Looming - any surprises on the horizon
Haha to the people suggesting Wilson would be cut. David Amerson has been borderline pathetic during the pre-season.
Wilson has been one of the best bargain FA signings in recent years. Cutting him and assuming Biggers/Amerson can suddenly cover would be a huge mistake. Especially since the other guy (DHall) is infamous for his cover skills, or lack there of. Pat White will be gone, he's bad. Grossman will be gone, he wastes a roster spot. Stallworth will be gone, the heartwarming return is over. LeRibeus will be gone, Matthews replaced him as backup C and frankly he sucks. Niles Paul hopefully will be gone, We've seen more out of Reed in 2 weeks than Paul in 2 years. Gomes hopefully will be gone, I'm shocked he's still here. Nothing but terrible coverage from that guy since day 1. Jamison goes to the PS. Thompson makes the team as 4th RB. |

I honestly don't know if Amerson could have been any worse. He's been laughably bad out there. He and LeRibeus are starting a short list of Shanahan draft busts. |

It would be nice if they were desperate and waited until after our Tampa game and offered a 6th round pick or so, but I don't expect the Bills or Jets to be willing to trade or lose a draft pick after drafting a QB to be future starters just for a 2nd or 3rd string guy. Probably both those teams aren't picky to have either Rex or PW and will wait for us to release them both. Does Bruce dig deep and talk about Byrd coming over and would that solve the safety issues we have? I think we can't afford any more than what we already have though. Possible? |
Re: Final Cuts Looming - any surprises on the horizon
Wait, you guys think Pat White has value? He's a 27 year old with zero accuracy and his only NFL highlight was getting knocked out.

I think Amerson has been very hot and cold throughout the preseason. The Tennessee game he should his tackling and his size and speed very well. He's made a couple of errors, but is still a young rookie with big upside. Had Cousins of been healthy, I would agree with you that he would be gone, but he's hurt and RG3 is coming off a major injury so it wouldn't be wise for Shanahan to cut him so a team like the Jets or Giants (as a backup) sign him for help or knowledge of the playbook. Niles Paul won't be gone. He can return kicks, play special teams and has improved big time from last year. Also Jordan Reed has just started coming along because he's just started practicing. He just started practicing because he's been hurt. Its very risky to cut a guy who does many things for a high potential rookie who hasn't been 100% healthy. If Jordan Reeds gets injured, then its Paulsen and Fred Davis who is about 9 months removed from a torn Achilles. Who would we find out there who knows the playbook as good as Paul? You're probably thinking Paul. But with so many teams losing TE's this year, I can easily see Paul getting picked up by someone else if we cut him. Also you said Thompson makes it as the 4th RB. Is that including our FB? Who's your 4 RBs then if it isn't including Daryl Young? |
Re: Final Cuts Looming - any surprises on the horizon
Amerson has gotten good grades from folks who get paid to know these things. Not outstanding, but good. He's a rookie and is going to make mistakes but, by all accounts has belongs and may challenge for a starting spot somewhere in the not too distant future. From what I have seen, he's been decent and has flashed some really good moments.
|
Re: Final Cuts Looming - any surprises on the horizon
Amerson has many more rookie mistakes to make. But such is required for his long-term development. Same goes for Rambo. They're like puppies - you have to put up with some chewed shoes if you want them to turn into awesome dogs.

Agree with this. Potential RT cuts from other teams are more interesting and important than cuts we'll make. |
U guys take too much stock into PS. Amerson will be fine, is he Patrick Peterson? No but not many players are.

I agree with the thought, but honestly, RT is one of the weakest positions across the NFL. I doubt the bubble guys that are going to be cut are going to be any improvement over Polumbus/Pashos. And that is said with a very heavy heart, because as long as Polumbus is on the right side we will have very little success with the basic dropback passing attack. |

Re: Final Cuts Looming - any surprises on the horizon
Where are you getting the idea that Amerson didn't play well? He had the one long pass where in did pass interference and a penalty, but i saw a lot of athletic ability and wonderful closing ability on Wide Receivers. He seems to really want to come up and lay a hit.
I thought Wilson was on the bubble with Crawford, but he stays now. This Pat White stuff needs to stop. Hankerson has too much upside to cut him and keep Stallworth instead. |
