So I got a phone call ...
 

... and was offered a job - Senior Counsel for Litigation. Still in the same office but different division and different client. Not much of a pay bump but doing stuff I love (litigation - a big variety from real estate, commercial, civil rights, torts, etc.). I am to be lead chair on all the big stuff, and help advise and mentor the line attorneys.

Big huge perk - Free college tuition for the kids if they go to a school in the UM system.

It was a bit out of the blue b/c I had applied for it some time ago and was told I had not gotten the job. Still some hoops to jump through so can't tell my supervisors just yet. My new boss's attitude was "We would like you here yesterday" but it's still the govt. so gotta make sure all the bureaucratic BS is done.

Pretty f'ing psyched.

Nice! Just got a new job myself. It does blow being the new guy but that wears off in time.

I've been looking for a new job for almost a year now with not a great deal of luck. So, I'm still driving an hour to work everyday - getting tired of the commute! Starting to wonder if I.T. is something I should stay in or not.

Congrats Joe, I know you've been pushing for something new for awhile. Man I need some movement in my job, but fighting to keep my head above water through layoffs of the last several years has been work in itself.

No. Different one from earlier in the Summer. They told me in July that it had been given to someone else. The person who took it, however, had applied for other jobs as well and one of them came through. The issue now is whether they have to readvertise or if they can just name me based on the last round of applications.

This is a tremendous opportunity but I must say the first impression I got from you was a middle school science teacher not a bad ass litigation attorney. You are very down to earth and a good guy. Glad to see a good guy win one!

Awesome last day. Clients stopping by to wish me luck, tell me how much they will miss me and "I hope they know how lucky they are to get you". Boss took me to lunch and asked if there was anything he could do to get me to stay.

On top of that, and completely out of the blue, was able to settle a million dollar plus case that was heading to a couple of years of potentially embarrassing litigation for my client at a number they absolutely loved and were convinced they couldn't get.

Walking out like a boss. F*** Yeah!

Not to rain on the parade but starting a new job sucks. I hate being the new guy vs the go to guy.All in good time I suppose.

Well, it's been two weeks now and I am happy to report being the new guy does not always suck. The folks here have shown more appreciation for me in two weeks than my old job did the entire first year. Apparently, in a meeting with the the No. 3 guy in the organization, my new bosses "were overflowing with praise on my start." I have been given several excellent litigation matters and am already very clearly the go to guy. It's clear to me that this job has the potential to be the best one I have ever had.

On top of all that, was able to cash out a bunch of leave I was never go to use but was going to lose on the transfer. It worked out to a little over a month's pay - damn nice Christmas bonus.

Life is good right now. I know it will change and work is called work for a reason, but, damn, it is nice to feel like you came out on top for a bit.

Thanks for all the well wishes guys. I truly wish the best for each and every one of you.
