Who would you pick in the first round?

I don't care about moving up ,down or around for that matter. If you could take one guy in the first round of the NFL 2005 draft who would it be and why?

Paintrain 03-19-2005 08:09 AM

Re: Who would you pick in the first round?

Mike Williams.. The guy is just a ball magnet and he is virtually guaranteed points in the redzone.. Either he will get up and make the catch or he will draw safety help that will free up another WR, Cooley or Portis out of the backfield.. I don't think you can get caught up in his 40 time, the guy is just a bonafide playmaker.

Derrick Johnson. There's no doubt. He's going to be good. Obvisiously, we don't need him. :oink:

Re: Who would you pick in the first round?

too me , it's a toss up between williams and pac-man. williams is the big threat that the skins need but the skins could also use a young cb, he looks really good and could possibly end up starting the season as the skins # 2 cb.

I would take Braylon Edwards with Mike Williams at a close second. they're both sick.

Re: Who would you pick in the first round?

Alex Smith. OK, we can't get him, and we don't really need him, but I think he is going to be one hell of a QB.

Braylon Edwards......No question about it.

Re: Who would you pick in the first round?

A top LB or CB.
I have always believed that with your top you should always pick the best player available regardless of position. However if there are a handful of player that are all even when it is your turn to pick - pick defense.

Defense wins championships, and history shows 99% of all Superbowl winners had (#1) strong defenses and (#2) balanced offenses. The St. Louis Rams might be the only exception, however the year they won the superbowl, statistically their defense was #1 against the run and #2 over all. So their defense was good that year, they just did not scare anyone. Their offense did scare peope and took all the headlines.
Look at the two strongest teams in 2004 the Patriots and the Eagles. They traditionally draft defense with their higher picks. The Patriots in 2004, four out their first five picks were defense players.
Look at Redskins terrible draft history since Snyder and Puppet Boy Cerrato took over. Other than 2004 Sean Taylor (defense- look how much Taylor improved our team) all of other high picks were offense:

2004
1 Sean Taylor* S Miami (FL)
3 Chris Cooley TE Utah St.
5 Mark Wilson OT California
6 Jim Molinaro OT Notre Dame

2003
2 Taylor Jacobs Florida WR
3 Derrick Dockery Texas G
7 Gibran Hamdan Indiana QB

2002
1 Patrick Ramsey Tulane QB
2 Ladell Betts Iowa RB
3 Rashad Bauman Oregon DB
3 Cliff Russell Utah WR

You can always pick up good, cheap offensive players during the offseason cap casualty cuts. However good/young/cheap defensive players are not easy to find and when you do find them they are expensive.
WR Williams would be a luxory, we NEED a LB, CB and strong safety.

Draft Defense!
Snyder, the press and fantasy footballers love offense.

Create a Poll

I suggest you take the top eight guys from the various Mocks listed over on HailRedskins.com, then create a poll here.

Then, next week, take the top four vote getters from our poll this coming week, and create a second poll.

Then, a third poll the following week! We should be able to narrow it down to who the Redskins will actually pick! I've thought about this for a couple of days, but don't have the time to set up the poll, and extract the top eight guys from the Mocks. I can only tell you Pac Man seems to have the "Total" edge right now if my math is correct. But you have to remember, these are only "Mocking", and may have no bearing on actual results on Draft day!

Espn disagrees with that statement. They said that he will definitely start eventually (or if pressed, this year) for teams. He will never make the Pro Bowl.

I dont see how we need a lb. But I do think we could use a cornerback. But our offense just flat sucks.

I say Rolle, but only if we know we are going to get Vincent Jackson in the second rd., but if we have to pick at the 9 spot I would have to go with William's, or Edward's if avail.

Re: Who would you pick in the first round?

Rolle is a Cowboy fan, always has been, always will be. We don’t want him for just that reason. He is not pure. He has been touched by Satan. He would never resign with us after his rookie contract expired.

That being said, what is our most pressing need? There are positions where an upgrade would be alright, but is not necessary, for example DE, RG, TE, MLB, DT and S.
CB and WR, I think all of us agree we need another solid player, but will be alright with have.

So what should our plan be, attempt to draft the CB or WR or take the best available at the other positions. Obviously if we stay at nine we will select a CB or WR, but if the offer comes to trade down I think we most definitely jump all over that and hope to secure some mid round picks to help add that depth.

In the end I think we will select the best WR available at nine and not gamble with the trading down.

Re: Who would you pick in the first round?

In all honesty it doesn't matter who we think we should draft. Joe Gibbs and the front office are going to make that decision reguardless of what we think.

But, for shits and giggles I think that we should take Maurice Clarette in the first round so that Danny Boy has an unblemished record of offseason blunders. If you have doubts about what I am saying, know that I stayed at a Holiday INN last night, while saving alot of money on my car insurrance by switching to Geico!

Guys the point that I am trying to make is that collectively we dont know half as much as the coaches and scouts do because we are not in their positions. If we did we would be coaches and scouts by now. Second, just because numbers and word of mouth suggest something, doesn't mean that it is completly true. Let our coaches and scouts do their jobs and select the best brand for the team. We will sit here and speculate the rest of the stuff.

Re: Who would you pick in the first round?

I really want to draft a guy who's going put some fear in opponents heart. Like Sean Taylor does. Where there's talent at every position in this years draft only a few guys actually scare me. Shawne Merriman, Derrick Johnson, Shaun Cody, Matt Roth, and Antrel Rolle. All these guys play defense huh? :oink:

BDBohnzie 03-21-2005 11:44 AM

Re: Who would you pick in the first round?

WR (Edwards or Williams), CB (Rolle or Jones), or one of the hoss DEs (Pollack, James, Merriman, etc).

Redskins_P 03-21-2005 11:47 AM

Re: Who would you pick in the first round?

Mike Williams, Troy Williamson, or any other big, fast WR.

Also I would consider taking a CB or DE (if we don't sign Brown)

Monksdown 03-21-2005 12:01 PM

Re: Who would you pick in the first round?

Merriman ran a 4.56 I think? And he is a linebacker 1st/DE second. Im a bit biased to him because he's local.

I would kill somebody to see the overall value chart that Vinny Cerrato has. They evaluate every player on one sheet, in order of who they like. I would think that they have maybe 2, more likely one cb in the top ten, and if he (rolle) slides to nine that they will pick him up. lb maybe get 1 in the top ten,,maybe. And wide receivers possible 2-3 in the top 10.

The argument is always between "picking for want vs picking the best player available". I wonder about the difference between a 9th pick, and later pick, just a few spots back. We love to show how late round picks prove great things, and yet on the other side of the coin, we are splitting hairs about the top 15 in the draft.

To a degree, and within reason, I think that if you do your research, and you really like a guy that other teams have later than your pick, then manuever to get him later. Or pick him up early.

So if you havent figured out my angle, I would encourage management to add depth to our cb's. Harris and Springs are competent, and Springs is even good. But in my opinion we need a rookie in the nickel spot this year who can take over when the time comes that we need to bump Harris back down to where he really belongs, the 3 spot.

And add a cb that is physical in the 1st 5 yards, and has acceleration. Not a shutdown corner. I want a guy who says hello after the ball is snapped with his helmet. I want physical cb's

What really sold me on him was watching his combine, they showed some highlight's of him I believe at the senior bowl, and let me tell you he's not just a big kid this guy can play, he's very aggresive you can tell that by how he run's his routes, I was also kinda surprised to see how fast he was this guy can create separation for himself not many people are capable of that at his size. I say we do what we have to do to trade into the early second rd and get this kid which should allow us to grab preferably Rolle in the first or 1 of the other CB's with this move we can cover 2 area's of need and save some cap space as well.

Trade down to the middle of the first take what we get for that and Gardner and hopefully that will be enough to move into the early 2nd and grab Vincent, we might have to kick something else in to do that but I would do what I had to do to make that scenerio happen.

Re: Who would you pick in the first round?

either get the pac man who has speed and speed kills and can't be taught,
antre rolle would be good too. if not drop bak and punt for a couple of lower draft
picks and maybe pick up williamson and still get vincent with the 2nd maybe 3rd.
as far as gardner take no less than a 3rd period. i am fed up with getting to little for our players. the champ/portis trade was rediculous. they should have given us the 2nd. stand strong get what you deserve. he was a no .1 pick afterall
