Choose Your 2014 Redskins Head Coach (Volume 2)

I'm starting a new thread, because it's been requested, and the previous thread was getting too long...for all you geniuses who get all upset about this and think Matty is playing favorites

Once again the poll is public. This time, I've narrowed it down to four candidates most closely linked to us by legit sources, plus Mike Shanahan...even though I would say with almost 100% certainty neither Jon Gruden nor Mike Shanahan will be the HC of the Redskins in 2014

Re: Choose Your 2014 Redskins Head Coach (Volume 2)

First.

I'm going Jay Gruden for lack of a better option. John Gruden is overrated in my opinion, Briles is meh, and like SS said, no way Shannys here.

Ugh. What the hell happened?!?

Re: Choose Your 2014 Redskins Head Coach (Volume 2)

Gruden isn't coaching this mess. He's smarter than that.

Re: Choose Your 2014 Redskins Head Coach (Volume 2)

I'm fine with giving Jay Gruden a shot. Make Morocco Brown the GM, Allen team Prez.

I don't like the idea of Briles at all. He's got the perfect gig there in Texas anyway.

Jon Gruden doesn't want this hot mess.

Kevin Sumlin is the wild card. I don't think he would be a bad choice.

Really not impressed with any of these choices currently. Really hope they give Bevell a look, but he seems like the choice for NYJ.

Send the Brinks truck to Shaw, maybe he'll reconsider. If not, then Bevell or Roman.

That's who I really want is David Shaw. Again, never going to happen.

I think our first hire should be a damn therapist with a fire extinguisher.

I've talked to Shaw a few times and he's pretty content where he is, but yeah I'd love it if he were here

Idzik reportedly really has his eye on Bevell for the Jets

I haven't heard great things about Roman's people/leadership skills

I think Sumlin is still the biggest home run hire on the list, so that's who I continue to vote for, but I honestly think Jay Gruden is the only guy on this list who takes the job if its offered to him. If we don't want him, I think we have to go with someone off the list.

Even a team in as bad of a mess as Atlanta is right now, they are going to drum us. We are by far the worst team in the league and I seriously doubt we put up any fight for the remaining games.

I can't wait to see the empty Fedex stadium for the last game. I'm still just shocked at how polar this team is from what we were saying this time last year.

Wouldn't be down with Morris at all at hc. Don't think he's earned his second shot, much more worthy than Morris.

Ok, dont know much about him was just thinking of other OC's around the league. I just looked him up and he was here with Marty i think, so probably wouldnt even want to come here.

Soon we might have to settle for HC's that dont fit the bill as a HC..aka Norv Turner's and Wade Phillips of the NFL.

Re: Choose Your 2014 Redskins Head Coach (Volume 2)

I voted for Jay Gruden, although he's not really my first choice. I'd much rather have a defensive minded HC like Mike Zimmer or Dan Quinn. Lovie is my #1 choice but he won't be an option I'm sure.

I don't like any of the choices. I want Lovie Smith for HC and philbin for OC. Second choice G Williams HC philbin OC.

This team could seriously fly with the right leadership.

Philbin is going nowhere and what makes Williams so great? Bounty cash.

Kind of telling that Kromer, and not PC, was named interim HC when Payton was suspended last year.
Brian Kelly?
I suspect Kelly is a year away from jumping to the NFL. I think/hear Chuck Martin is positioning himself to be the NOtre Dame hire when Kelly leaves for the NFL.

Anyway, you know I'm hopelessly biased pro-Kelly as a Notre Dame fan and Grand Valley grad, and he's a perfect mess-cleaner which we need. But I don't wish this situation on him and think he'll pick his spot more wisely.

I would rather get a coordinator from an NFL team over a college HC. Someone like Darrell Brevell, Vic Fangio, Greg Roman, or Jay Gruden.
I would rather get a coordinator from an NFL team over a college HC. Someone like Darrell Brevell, Vic Fangio, Greg Roman, or Jay Gruden.
I think it's just a sign of the times that all the coaching talent is in the college ranks. The NFL pool is more limited than I can remember in the past.

I think Jay Gruden is talented enough as a coach to win as an HC in the NFL, but he's not a home run hire by any means. For a coach like him building a strong staff will be important. There are guys in the college ranks with big personalities that will come in and win right away at the pro level like Chip Kelly is. I just don't think those guys want this job.

Re: Choose Your 2014 Redskins Head Coach (Volume 2)

I voted Kevin Sumlin. My hope is Ken Whisenhut, Russ Grimm as OC, and Ken Norton Jr. as DC. Whisenhut has Philip Rivers looking like an all-star again. Ken Norton could help build a Seattle styled defense.

Shanahan won 100+ games prior to coming here. He's terrible. Only thing that matters is whether you can coach or not. Period.

I agree, maybe we can get proven guys like that former rookie of the year who played for the bills and also has some coaching experience with the Saints and Rams, I think his name is Haslett. I hear John Elways coach will be free at the end of the year. He is two rings!!!

All joking aside, I would prefer a HC with NFL experience but too often you see a coaching tree guy get a job and they basically run a system they've been trained in and don't have the ability to adapt it to fit their roster or their opponent. Half the NFL is running a version of the Bill Walsh west coast offense including the Redskins.

I just don't want to hire the next great system guy with a good resume like Jay Gruden. Btw, Grudens Bengals have never finished better than 11th on offense. They are currently ranked 10th. I don't see anything that Jumps out and says next great HC.

Great head coaches are harder to find than Franchise QB or Shutdown Corners. If it was easy every team would have one.
Most owners take what they perceive as the sure bet and hire a coordinators from a successful coaching staff with Belichick being the most recent and it has backfired. See Romeo Crennel, Al Groh, Josh McDaniel, Nick Saban and Eric Mangini. For decades owners have been hiring assistants from the Sid Gilman and Bill Walsh Coaching tree, half the league is from the Walsh tree...
Unfortunately the game has evolved and the gilman tree died when Vermiel and Gibbs retired. The walsh tree is struggling with only Denver doing well but thats mostly because of Manning. Sean Payton was an assistant under Bill Walsh guys, Ray Rhodes and Jim Fassell. He also coached under Parcells. Payton is successful today because he did it his way. He is expanding what he learned.

Who ever we get, I hope he is an innovator and does it his way, not a guy that is hoping for a 10 win season every year by doing what the great ones used to do.

Re: Choose Your 2014 Redskins Head Coach (Volume 2)

that was a shitty rant, sorry.

I like to keep it simple.

Nothing tells me Jay Gruden is a good HC other than his last name. His offenses have never finished top 5 or have been considered dominant. I just don't want another guy running the same shit everyone else is running.

If I had to pick someone on this pool, I vote Sumlin.
My original pick was Todd Bowles but that just me hoping for an original Redskin to return us to glory.

Finally I agree with you on something Gtripp. What is funny is that goes for all the coaches, Defense, Special Teams, etc.

It doesn't take 10 weeks for NFL players to adapt to a special teams system. There is only so many ways you can cover a punt, or kickoff.

Burns, Shanahans, Haslet... Let them all go. Build around RG3, Alfmo, and some other bright spots. Gettis actually looked good today in his limited play time.
