Pick Your Next Redskins Head Coach

More interview requests so time for a new thread

Had to go with Franklin, I really like him. There's a reason many major college programs pursued him.

Your link to httr24-7 cincy offense breakdown sold me last night SS. Jay Gruden ftw.

4 teams have asked to inteview Gruden per JLC. Skins, Vikings, Lions, Titans. So much for him drawing no interest.

Re: Pick Your Next Redskins Head Coach

Of the guys listed I would rank:

1) Zimmer
2) Franklin
3) Gruden

While working with RGIII is a lot different than working with Andy Dalton, three consecutive play-offs where the offense ****s the bed against competition that isn't unbeatable for Jay Gruden scares me a little bit. Personally I would much prefer a defensively oriented head coach, our D has been too bad not to try that at this juncture. Franklin certainly interests me as well.

Who do we think is our biggest competition for Gruden?

Re: Pick Your Next Redskins Head Coach

Bevell. We can find a good DC (I say Greg Williams for 4-3, Wade Phillips if we stay 3-4). We will be defined by our offense (RG3 is the face of this franchise). Bevell runs the type of offense we need to run. Run heavy with a dynamic quarterback.

And, if you are one of those people who believes RG3 is a headcase, you should want him even more. He (as OC of the Vikings) was behind Brett Favre's best year even while Brett was a sideshow attraction.

Lions maybe?

I'm just guessing.

Re: Pick Your Next Redskins Head Coach

I'm a bit interested. A lot of the defensive names the skins have been tied to are 4-3 type guys. Do you forsee us moving back to the 4-3? Personally, I think it would work better for us. I believe we have better fitting personnel for ther 4-3 right now. I'd like to see Orakpo and Kerrigan with their hand in the dirt and it makes ILB less of an immediate need with Riley playing well.

Re: Pick Your Next Redskins Head Coach

I said Gruden because:

1) I read a report that said that Bevell may have a coordinator's personality but not a HC's personality.

2) Zimmer is described as really blunt and honest. While I admire those qualities in people, his constellation of those traits may limit his important diplomatic moments as a HC

3) Franklin is tempting but may be too young, too unproven. He may need more seasoning before being an NFL HC.

4) The other folks don't excite me much.

My 2 cents.

The Titans are at the top of his list. I don't know if he's at the top of theirs

I'm pretty sure, from all I've heard, that Jay Gruden would want a 4-3 defense

Why did you say (elsewhere) that you were concerned about the staff he would assemble?

I haven't seen Pat Shurmur listed before as one of our candidates but this article says that he is:

Re: Pick Your Next Redskins Head Coach

My thoughts are that any interview with NFC East candidates (present and former) (Fewell, Bisaccia, McDermott) is mostly just an informational purposes type of interview. That is, to find out how division rival teams scout the 'skins. From what I have read, this is a practice that many teams, who are looking to replace their head coach, will do during the interview process. I recognize that I could be very wrong on this, but if that's the case, I wouldn't put too much stock into the interviews with the above mentioned names.

Do we need to read into anything as to the exclusion of Ken Whisenhunt's name on this thread's poll or is he still a realistic possibility for Washington?

I'm thinking in terms of the top three - 1. Darrell Bevell 2. Jay Gruden 3. Jim Caldwell. That's who I think the front office wants to narrow the search down to - with James Franklin being the "dark horse" candidate. While I know people will point to that one really bad season in Indy for Caldwell, I think he's a great choice.

I think Shurmur fits into what I was saying earlier. The Redskins want to interview assistant coaches from each of their division rivals - mostly for informational purposes (scouting purposes.) So, it makes sense that Shurmur would join the list with Fewell and Bisaccia.

I like it and agree with Bruce, i want a little more emotion and someone to get in some faces around the locker room. Some of this shoulder shrug horsesh*t from the players and coaches this season was unacceptable. Gruden to me seems ready to be a HC.

Just want to post this again from yesterday's thread. If you didnt see it, check it out. In depth look at Jay Gruden's offense and concepts. Excellent breakdown.

I think that Greg Roman has the right stuff to be an NFL Head Coach. I feel the same way about Perry Fewell but I prefer a HC with an offensive background.

Difficult choice for a guy like that, do you ride that stud for the next 12+ years or do you try to break off on your own??? Id ride that pony to a few rings before making the leap.

I was listening to an analysis of him not too long ago. Seems like a decent prospect. Can't ignore what he's been doing at Vandy.

I think I would be fine with any of the following:

Bisaccia
Gruden
McDermott
Zimmer

This is of course providing they picked a good staff to surround themselves with.

Very nice guy, I met him while he was here at Maryland. Has some NFL experience (WRs coach at Green Bay in 2005).

Personally, I'd like a more established NFL coordinator.

A side note for those who were clamoring for the great Lovie Smith:

@AdamSchefter

Lovie Smith’s contract contains the clause that gives him final say over all personnel matters on the Buccaneers' final 53-man roster.

Be glad we didn't get ourselves into another situation like that. No way would I give Lovie final say so on personnel. Going to make that GM job pretty irrelevant.

Good call! For once, I want a coach to be a coach and the GM to handle the personnel moves. I'm still a little skeptical on Allen making the player personnel decisions, but hey, I think anybody is better than Vinny Cerrato.
