Roger Goodell says NFL considering eliminating extra point
I don't think i've saw this posted anywhere else yet, so if it has been, please move it.
I saw this headline today and thought this is the stupidest thing i've ever heard of. It is one thing to try and improve player safety, but this borders on stupidity. Would this mean that kickers are mostly abolished, since Goodell currently has them mulling over eliminating the kick off completley?? NFL considering proposal to abolish extra points - NFL.com He says that partially fan excitement factors into their decision, feeling that 99.9% of the time the extra point is almost automatic. This guy sucks, seriously. I could see him saying that one day he envisions a 32 team playoff scenario because the "fans would be excited".... |
Re: Roger Goodell says NFL considering eliminating extra point
Actually wouldn't mind it but I don't like his one idea given of a negative point from seven. I'd say give 2 options: a 1 point attempt from the 2 or a 2 point attempt from the 5 yard line. I think goodell has a decent idea, but id like to see it in a probationary 1 year experiment.

Are you saying to run an offensive play from either the two or five? Or keep the PAT at the two and just make the two point attempt from the five? If the latter, then no changes are needed. Just keep it all the same. I personally dont see the big deal with it. The PAT affects a game in a meaningful way once every 4 or 5 years. A couple of games here and there have been lost due to a missed PAT, but not enough to matter imo. Although I dont buy Goodells reasoning. I dont believe its about exciting plays so much as its about extra commercial time. Add one commercial per TD scored. |
Man keep the fucking pat, excuse my language but Damn this mfer wants teams to score arena numbers or something.. hes already watering down the defense as is.
|
Re: Roger Goodell says NFL considering eliminating extra point
Don't eliminate them. If he wants to make it more interesting, move it back. Instead of the 3, move it back to the 8 and make it a 25 yard attempt.
|
Re: Roger Goodell says NFL considering eliminating extra point
Good. The extra point is useless.
Need to make a TD worth 7 instead of 6 if it is eliminated. |
Re: Roger Goodell says NFL considering eliminating extra point
Crusty says eliminate Roger Goodell.

It's a worthless play, I'm all for changing it up.

"There's one proposal in particular that I've heard about," Goodell went on. "It's automatic that you get seven points when you score a touchdown, but you could potentially go for an eighth point, either by running or passing the ball, so if you fail, you go back to six." |

I kind of like the idea. Think it would make the games a bit quicker since most of the time it would go straight from the TD to the kickoff.

Re: Roger Goodell says NFL considering eliminating extra point
I'm an old timer and hate all the changes made by Goodell, he is ruining the best American sport. If it ain't broken...

Re: Roger Goodell says NFL considering eliminating extra point
No one could objectively be against eliminating the PAT. It is literally useless in terms of entertainment. Being against it would simply be a grumpy old man type fear of change.

I'm not sure what the reason would be to make this change, but not putting the kicking team on the field and instead making a TD worth seven points changes absolutely nothing. |

Sure its almost automatic but those times when its not automatic and a team misses it seems like they end up chasing that point for the rest of the game and somehow the missed PAT ends up factoring into the final score. It aint broke and doesnt needs fixed. |

Statistically the problem is that that almost never happens any more. |

It doesnt happen much but when it does it changes the whole dynamic of the game. |

Extra points are made 98.4% of the time.

I'm one of the grumpy old men that dont want to change it.Theyve changed way too much over the yrs already.Pretty soon every drive will just start from the 20 yard line with no punting or kickoffs allowed. If you want to move the ball back to make it harder than ok,but dont eliminate it

We sit through successful PAT's 98.4% of the time, with misses occurring a rare 1.6% of the time. I don't know about anyone else but I will often go to the bathroom, go to the kitchen, etc., during extra points. Watching them is pointless (no pun). On the rare occasion when one is missed, I can be sure of a replay. |

True but the new media are more compact, have more capacity, and better resolution. In short they are an improvement. I dont understand how eliminating the PAT will improve the game. |

You don't understand how adding some excitement to what's already the most boring and automatic play in the game improves things? |

They already have a chance to go for 8 points or stay at 6. This doesnt seem like an improvement or excitement adder. It seems like an XFL gimmic. |
Re: Roger Goodell says NFL considering eliminating extra point
People scoffed at the idea of adding the 2 pt conversion years ago too.
Fact is people hate change even when it's for the better. I don't see how changing up the most boring play in the game is a bad thing at all. |

I'm a grumpy old man (66) who has long thought the extra point to be useless. I've disliked the idea of games being decided by kicks for a long time. I wouldn't mind if the field goal was eliminated, as well. If field goals were eliminated, we'd find out which team is truly the better team. Then, if teams want to win, they'd better be able to stick the ball in the end zone. If there are more ties, I'm OK with that. The better teams will still emerge over the course of a full season. The new kickoff rule has already virtually eliminated kickoff returns. Honestly, I liked it the way it used to be because I find kickoff and punt returns to be an exciting part of the game. Yet, it's time for us to realize and accept that the NFL kicking game is on a slippery slope. If the lawyers who run the NFL office are going to eventually eliminate the kicking game in its entirety they might as well do it now. The game can start with one team having the ball on it's own 20 yard line. Punts, perhaps renamed "Give Ups", would simply involve a HC waving a white flag and the officials would move the ball 40 yards downfield where the other team's offense would start. |

I'd eliminate the KO before the PAT. |

I liked when they added the 2pt conversion but this isnt change for the better. The kick off is the most boring play in the game, not the PAT. |
Re: Roger Goodell says NFL considering eliminating extra point
Eliminate the two point conversion and the kicking element.
Put the ball on the 10 for pass or run one point conversion. That would make or break a lot of games. |

Unfortunately, Goodell goes by a different version: if it ain't broke, fix it 'til it is. |
Re: Roger Goodell says NFL considering eliminating extra point
I voted 'yes' they should consider eliminating the XP but I'd rather see them modify it by making it an actual play. Give teams the option to kick from the 18 yd line (35 yd FG) for one or run a play from the 3 yd line for two. Adds an element of strategy to each scoring play and execution so that it's not automatic.

Why would anyone support eliminating something that's so much a part of the game we love? Shouldn't preserving football be more important than your being merely "entertained"? Perhaps you should examine your priorities outside football if you support destroying it by doing away with an integral part of the game, that takes very little time, because it doesn't "entertain" you. Oh, how I wish I were alive when the Redskins were killing the 80s and early 90s, and John Madden's Raiders were still terrorizing opponents. That was real football. And every year, Roger "F****** Idiot" Goodell carries the NFL away from that particular game more, whether by practically eliminating the kickoff, to limiting contact by RBs, to limiting huge hits by handing out fines. And the PAT not useless; 2003 Saints and John Carney ring a bell with anyone? I believe that Saints fans everywhere remember that PAT very much. |
Re: Roger Goodell says NFL considering eliminating extra point
I don't know why people keep calling the kick-off from the 35 yard line a new rule. It's not a new rule. It's simply a rule that was changed back from what it was before.
Anyway, as for the change on the PAT - I'm all for change. If you're going to leave the PAT where it's at, might as well just take on the seventh point when the TD is scored. It's practically the same thing. There's no drama or excitement on the PAT. It's impossible to block. At least, the PAT needs to be moved back enough to where it's not automatic. It needs to be earned. I'd say make it a 35 yard attempt. At least not less than a 30 yard attempt. Pretty much everything under 30 is automatic. That would put some drama in the PAT, and I don't think it would be such a change that those who hate change for change sake would be too upset over that. That way, if there happens to be an offensive penalty on the PAT, then it really puts them in danger of missing the point. I'd say either that or just go for two after every TD. And, while someone mentioned kick-offs, why not actually award 3 points to those kickers who manage to kick the ball through the uprights on the kick off. It does happen (maybe not often, but it does) and I think the kicker should be award for being able to do that. The other team would still get the ball placed at the 20 as if it were a touchback, but the kicker would get awarded for the kick-off going through the upright. Think about this: A team literally has a chance to go up by two scores before giving the ball back to the other team. That, then forces the other team to really step it up a notch if they're going to get back in the game. |
Re: Roger Goodell says NFL considering eliminating extra point
People act like Goodell is the only commish to have rule changes go into effect under his regime.
The game is constantly evolving. Always has, always will. |

Get off my lawn!!!! i think they need to change the way penalties by the defense on a PAT are tacked onto the kickoff since most kickoffs are already touchbacks, letting the kicker kick from the 40 instead of the 25 really doesnt change anything. or do they kick from the 30 now? whatever. |
