Re: Redskins release center Will Montgomery
Surprised because he's performed well but if we're moving away from zone blocking, we do need new personnel.
Lichtensteiger should be good enough. |
Re: Redskins release center Will Montgomery
Monty helped us to launch a pretty potent running game over the last few years. Good luck to him.

Lichtensteiger should be good enough.
I don't know what you mean. Kory is 285 lbs. Monty is 300 lbs. Is Kory considered to be better in pass protection? I'm concerned that Kory might have a very difficult time with big NT's. |

What's not to understand? I said I think Kory will be good enough...meaning we don't need to shop around. I do think Monty was better, but Lichtensteiger is probably better suited for center than guard anyway. Lets just move him back there and find some better guards. I guess this also opens the door for LeRibeus. |

Re: Redskins release center Will Montgomery
If we want bigger, there's always this from 2012:

Re: Redskins release center Will Montgomery
Monty was a class act; I wish him well in the future. He gave it his all while a Redskin.
|
Re: Redskins release center Will Montgomery
This is a mistake. Montgomery was above average in 2012, and if he were surrounded by decent guards, he'd still be a solid center. I would have rather signed a veteran center and had them compete for the starting spot, then drafted a center next year.
What doesn't make sense is that they released Montgomery before Lichtensteiger. Lichtensteiger! WTF? I suppose they could be planning on attempting to deal him to Cleveland; that's the only reason I can come up with. Some very questionable decisions have been made thus far in Free Agency. Let's just say that my faith in this FO hasn't increased...at all. |
Re: Redskins release center Will Montgomery
Steiger can play, very mobile. And they're asking him to put on 10 pounds.
Whether you're running a zone or any kind of running scheme, your C needs to be a guy who is agile enough to get to the second level. Centers are not often the biggest on the line, it's just not a position where size is a huge issue. Also, the C is rarely matched up one on one against a DT in a pass block situation. He will usually have the help from one of the Gs. |
Re: Redskins release center Will Montgomery
I think you guys are friggin nuts. Steiger is our 2nd best run blocking lineman, behind Trent. He'll now be in a spot where the emphasis on pass blocking is minimized.

Sure, Lichtensteiger is a fine run-blocker, but I'm willing to sacrifice that if it means getting better protection for Griffin. Morris running for 125 yards isn't as important as Griffin staying on the field and throwing behind a good line. If Lichtensteiger does put on 10 pounds and improves in pass-blocking, I'll be cool with it. |
Re: Redskins release center Will Montgomery
Thank you Will for your time.
I was pleasantly surprised that he was able to hold his own and become a decent center for us. |
Re: Redskins release center Will Montgomery
There is a method to all the madness...hopefully it will translate to Ws.
|
Re: Redskins release center Will Montgomery
Run blocking schmun blocking.....
Bobby Griffin ran for his life last year and Shanahan isn't here anymore. We need boys that create a wall so we can pass (remember every NFL pundit will tell you its a passing game now). |
Re: Redskins release center Will Montgomery
Cutting Monty saves us $1.9M while cutting Lichtensteiger would have saved $1.1M.
Lichtensteiger is also 3 yrs younger, something to keep in mind. This move probably would have happened last year if LeRibeus had his act together. |
Re: Redskins release center Will Montgomery
No surprise, was expected to happen.
The line needs to evolve, expect more changes IMO. |
Re: Redskins release center Will Montgomery
So who is the new center?

If he came to camp last year without the extra 40 pounds... |

Re: Redskins release center Will Montgomery
Good thing for LeRibeus he still has a chance to salvage things if he shows up ready to grind.
|
Re: Redskins release center Will Montgomery
I always liked Monty and wish him well.
I think it was Cooley who said Monty had a tough time calling line blocks and picking up blitzes last year. Maybe that played into the decision. We definitely need to improve the o-line play, so hopefully this move helps some. |
Re: Redskins release center Will Montgomery
Monty, Lich and Polumbus....they're simply not 16 game starters. They're solid backups. That's why we get abused every time we play tough physical defenses. Not sure if this guy from Clev is any better but we have to get more sturdy in the trenches.

Re: Redskins release center Will Montgomery
What is the significance of the "failed physical" designation given Will Montgomery ?
|
Re: Redskins release center Will Montgomery
You have to really question the character of a person who, immersed in a culture of fitness and athleticism, simply ignores all around him and does nothing to maintain the necessary conditioning to do his damn job. How can Ribeye NOT be in shape? Haynesworth I get..."I got paid so now I don't have to work". But josh is a 3rd round G who hadn't done squat and has not been paid. Is there anything that motivates him? Maybe if they convinced him the dlinemen he's blocking ate his Twinkie.

Heard Cooley say that the physical was the end of season physical. Apparently it's not very thorough, like you can say you're fine and you're on your way. Sounds fishy but cleaning house on the OL is fine by me. |

Agreed. You have to show up to work ready to play. I mean, if I showed up drunk to work on my first day (or any day for that matter) I'd be fired quicker than Cerrato can blow the cap in one FA signing. |
Good thing for LeRibeus he still has a chance to salvage things if he shows up ready to grind.
There's certainly a guard spot available for someone to win.
They're going to have to address the line in the draft. They need two players over the next two years. Wouldn't shock me if they took two in this draft. |
