RT and OL thread
With the signing of DJax and Ryan Clark, I think it becomes obvious that we will likely upgrade RT through the draft.
To that end, Ross Tucker did a podcast with Greg Cosell and discussed the OL at the top of the draft class. Here is the link: (they also discussed the DJax signing in the beginning) Ross Tucker - NFL Broadcaster and Motivational Speaker I listened but couldn't make notes, so if someone wants to breakdown what they discussed that would be great, but also I know a lot of guys here go "hog" wild on the draft classes, so maybe those who do could add insight into the various OL and RT's that will be coming out in the draft. Finally there are a couple FA's out there, so those might be discussed as well. |
Re: RT and OL thread
Whatever happened to De La Puente? I was pretty excited to get him.

Re: RT and OL thread
I've been a huge fan of Antonio Richardson for a while, but he might not be a Day 1 starter. More of a project, but huge at 6-6, 335, and extremely athletic. He would be a reach at #34, but will probably be taken near the end of the 2nd, so you'd want to trade back if he's your guy.
Morgan Moses(6-6, 314) has a ton of potential as well. CBS Sports compares him to Ryan Clady, but I've seen some posts by Virginia fans on a few Redskins boards that denounce him. I'd like some more of your opinions on him, Virginia fans. Cameron Fleming(6-5, 323) is another RT I really like. He's got good size, but probably isn't quick enough to play RT in the NFL, so he would probably move to the interior of the line. We do need a RG too, however. He'll probably go in the 4th. These are a few of the prospects I would like us to draft. |

Re: RT and OL thread
I think the Redskins have put themselves in the position to pick best available player at any position - which seemed like their strategy all along. So if it's true what they're saying about this draft then I'd put my money on a cornerback with the 34th pick. Even though it's not at the preferred position(fs), it still also fills a need in the secondary and also best available. Win win at both strategies.
|
Re: RT and OL thread
In the 2nd round draft TE Troy Niklas of Notre Dame, he is a very strong 6'7" 270, and a great blocker. He would be like a 6th offensive lineman.
Then draft another OT in the 4th or 5th round |
Re: RT and OL thread
A tight end with our first pick?
Thats quite refutable. |

If you're right, that could mean...LAMAAAAAARCUS JOYYYYYNER! If we took him with our first pick, we would have an awesome draft even if we didn't take any other starters at all (hyperbole alert). He could either play FS or slot corner if Porter sucks. Lamarcus Joyner is going to be a stud in the NFL. |

Thats quite refutable.
a mediocre Tackle, or another Gronkowski ? easy choice chip the pass rushers with a 270 lb stud, and RGIII will have plenty of time. |
Re: RT and OL thread
We have to take the best player with our first pick. If that's o-line then that would be great. But it could also be a pass rusher, which I still think we need. If Dee Ford from Auburn slips into the 2nd round that could be tempting.

And what makes you think Niklas is going to be the next Gronkowski? I like him as well, but first of all, there's going to be better players available than him when we pick; second, TE isn't a big enough need, IMO, to justify taking one with our first pick. |

I agree . OL , DB or a pass rusher would be awesome . The only positions that I would rather not pick at 34 would be qb , rb , wr . |

Zac Martin might slip to the second round, if so I take him, he is a good one... he might be a guard though. The tackles left are questionable picks early in the 2nd... Moses, Richardson, Mewhort, and ? Niklas has only played tight end 2 years, he has the size, strength, and decent speed to be a very good one. |
As of today I would be extremely frustrated if we took a TE at 34. Between WR/RB/QB we have offensive skill covered. And I would be hard pressed to believe that a TE would be the 34th best player available on many boards.

Re: RT and OL thread
On the podcast, Ross Tucker and Greg Cosell discussed the following players:
Tackles: Tucker said that Jake Mattews is the best OL player in the draft. Plays like he's been in the NFL for five seasons. Tucker also said that Greg Robinson is the best OL prospect meaning that he has an even higher ceiling than Matthews because of his size and athletic ability. But Robinson did not play in a pro-style offense in college and will need some time to develop. Tucker called Zach Martin "the poor man's Jake Matthews" because of his knowledge of how to play OT. Per Tucker, it's as if Martin has played three years in the NFL. Tucker was not high on Taylor Lewan because he thinks that Lewan isn't smooth laterally and that he has poor technique. Tucker thinks Cyrus Kouanjo is mean and he likes that but he doesn't think that Cyrus moves well. Per Tucker, Cyrus will need to play RT in the NFL. Cosell seemed to agree with Tucker on the above players. Cosell likes Moses of UVA and he also likes Lucas of K-State. Cosell thinks that Lucas will be a RT and sees him as a good pass protector. Guards: Tucker likes Xavier S'ua Filo and David Yankey at OG. He called S'ua Filo "a rare athlete". Tucker thinks that S'ua Filo and Yankey are mirror images of one another in that SF is more athletic than Yankey and Yankey is more powerful than SF, yet both are athletic and powerful. SF also played LT at UCLA. Tucker does not like Cyril Richardson at all. Cosell was silent about Richardson. Tucker thinks tht Chris Watt of ND is a good player but that he will probably be a career backup in the NFL. Cosell disagreed with Tucker about Watt who Cosell thinks can be an NFL starter. That's all they talked about. |
Thanks

Reaching for an OT is probably a bad move but we might be able to get the best OG in the draft at #34. That would help us, too. |

That would be great, OG would be great as long as he is good enough to start. We need starting quality at #34, I do not care what position. |

Of course it would help, especially if Compton is moved to RT. |
Re: RT and OL thread
Taking the 6th-7th best OT in round 2 might be taking the BEST RT...which is what we need. Remember we got Jansen in round 2 and he started right away.
|
Re: RT and OL thread
Oh, I forgot to note that Tucker said that Jake Matthews is better than any OT in last years draft.
|
Re: RT and OL thread
Heard scout/consultant Chris Landry talk about Morgan Moses a couple weeks ago and said excellent Right Tackle prospect. Said good footwork, perfect long arms for pass protection, good film, better run blocker than pass protector but with his size, foot work and arms pass protecting should develop nicely. Said he should be a right tackle early in career but could see him shift to Left Tackle down the road. Good prospect in the second.
UVA has put out a nice crop of Olineman, I like Morgan Moses at 34. Too many flags for Cyrus Kouanjo in the second, but if he is there say in the 3rd or 4th, probably grab him. |

Can u say FA? After this debacle he will go undrafted.

Re: RT and OL thread
Here's my post-draft O-line predictions:
LT: Trent Williams. Same ole, same ole. LG: Shawn Lavuao. Upgrade in pass-blocking, downgrade in run blocking. C: Kory Lichtensteiger. Upgrade in run-blocking, downgrade in pass-blocking. RG: Spencer Long. Don't expect him to start Day 1, but for sure by the middle of the season he should be, IMO. RT: Tyler Polumbus. What a pleasure to be able to pencil in our stud RT every year! Moses could be the starter by the end of the year, but I don't expect it. All in all, an upgrade over last year's pathetic unit. What are your thoughts on the O-line starters? |

He will be starting at R or L guard come gameday. I think Moses will start over Polumbus as well, saving us some dough in the process, and Compton can back him up. Im just so tired of Polumbus eeking out a starting position every year because he has no competition. I hope Moses beats his ass out, and we never hear the name Polumbus ever again. Fuckin turnstyle. |

Luavo is the starting LG. Has been since the day they signed him. Not my opinion; the Skins brass has said so numerous times. |
Won't be surprised if Polumbus is the day 1 starter. The zone game can take a while to get the timing down. Moses seems like a smart kid and he's got talent so you never know though. Hopefully he comes in hungry and works hard.

I agree, Gruden has said Moses has a lot of work to do. |

I am willing to bet, unless Moses looks lost in space, he will start. Polumbus can run block, but he can't create a pocket at all.

Re: RT and OL thread
I wouldn't expect any of these OL to contribute this year unless there is an injury. I could see these guys replacing some of the guys next year, but not this year. In fact, beyond the kicker, I don't see really anybody from this years draft that will able to provide quality play this year.

Re: RT and OL thread
It kinda amazes me that after all this clamoring for OL, over 60% of the board thinks that Neither will start week one, or that no rookie will have an impact for us in their rookie season.

Was there a poll on this? If there was, put me in the minority. Jay Gruden outright stated that he thinks that Long will compete will a starting job. Coach Gruden said that Moses has a few more things to work on and it may take him a little longer to be ready to start than it will take Long. Long has the advantage of having played his college ball in a similar system to the one Gruden employs. So, he (Long) says that he is picking it up quickly. According to Gruden, Long definitely has the physical tools. Moses has more to learn about the system than Long does. Also, he needs to work on some techniques, For example, he plays a little high. So, it might take him a little longer to become a starter. Now, this is strictly my own ignorant thoughts on Moses. You can say what you want about his flaws, but all he does is stonewall pass rushers. He is what you want physically, he's a smart guy who wants to succeed, and he plays hard. I think he definitely has a chance to surprise his coaches and start Game 1. |
