Overseas Redskins fans (non American born) sign in here

What attracted you to the Skins?

Me, well the first ever superbowl shown live over here in the UK was the hogs vs the fins and knowing nearly nothing about the relative strengths of the two teams the presenter told us the dolphins were 14point favourites to win the game.

Being a Celtic fan I naturally went with the underdogs and have grown to love us and been with Washington every painful and sometimes magical step of the way ever since.

Where are you and what's your story?

Re: Overseas Redskins fans (non American born) sign in here

Came to NYC in '82, born in Coventry City, funny thing that was the game that got me. My Uncle told me pick a team I said REDSKINS and the rest is history. I was so mad the following year we made it back played the raiders and couldn't stop Marcus Allen.

RedskinRat 04-08-2014 09:23 PM

On exercise with BAOR in Medicine Hat, Alberta in '79. The PX had a game on and because all the Canuck infantry were supporting one team, I picked the other team. The Redskins got hammered by the Cowboys and thus ensued one of the finest barroom brawls I've ever participated in.

Oh, and by a fascinating quirk of fate, I moved here in '95, became a citizen in '03 and the Skins have been fucking abysmal since I got here.

RR that's good.

I was a small kid when the Skins played the Fins, it was also the first game I ever watched.
I grew up just outside the DC, and I grew up in the 80s. My family used to spend Sundays watching the games with friends. So it's in my blood. I will always be a Skins fan. There are so many childhood memories associated with the Redskins that they will always be there, it is also one reason why I don't ever want the name to change.

My thought exactly.. But what about 93-03 whose fault was that? There must be someone to blame!

Re: Overseas Redskins fans (non American born) sign in here

Well, since you put non-american born, I will add my name to the list. While I was born an American citizen to American parents, my dad is retired Air force and, at the time of my birth, was stationed overseas at Kadena AFB in Okinawa, Japan.

How I became a Skins fan. Back when I was just getting into football, around 8 or 9, my dad was stationed in Dayton, Ohio which is about an hour out of Cincy. It was bengal country and several people there were obnoxious bengal fans and annoyed the crap out of me. The Steelers were hated, so I rooted for Pitt, only to see them in the SB against Dallas several times in the 70's. Pitt and Dallas were actually a decent rivalry during that decade even though they didnt play often in the regular season. Learned to hate Dallas from that, and shortly after, my Dad got transferred to the Pentagon, and the Dallas hate was evident here. I became a Skins fan full time. Even though we moved around plenty after that, I stayed a Skins fan. And when my Dad retired (between my junior and senior year of HS), he took a job with a defense contractor located in Arlington and we moved back to the area. Been here every since.

My story. I was born in NC before the Carolina Panthers were here. The Redskins were the "local" team played on the weekends so I ended up watching a bunch of Skins game. Watched all the Super Bowls so at least I got some enjoyment out of them....lol

If it makes you feel better. Up until I was about 10 or 11, all the kids my age when they found out kept asking me why my eyes werent... Japanese looking. They couldnt understand why I was born there but didnt look like a Japanese person.

Why didn't you end up going Panthers? I know as soon as Baltimore got the Ravens everyone north of Montgomery County (and even some there) ditched the Redskins, but granted those were some rough years, save 1999.

Fair enough...but having been a Skins fan living in New York, Boston, and Philly, I've definitely been treated like I'm a "non American born."

Well, all of my family have been Redskins fans since the late 60's. But when I was born then 3 weeks later the skins won the super bowl. So its really special to me!

Re: Overseas Redskins fans (non American born) sign in here

Easy.

School in Germany in the 90´s. Everybody and his brother was a Cowboys fan. I, being the hateful ass that I am, looked who their biggest rival / hate / whatever was and became a Skins fan.

Then I lost sight of the NFL for a couple of years due to other interests. When starting to play the game myself in 2005 (at the grandfatherage of 26) I got back to sport, the NFL and the Redskins.

And since I started coaching (football-cripple) I watched our game from a different view, and enjoyed even the bad ones - I could always learn.

Only saw one NFL game live though - 2008 Saints vs Chargers in London. Actually made me like the Saints quite a bit, too.

You would be amazed at the level of interest there is in the NFL over here my closest friends in Scotland all have their favourite teams, amongst celtic fans green Bay philly and the Jets are popular because they wear green/white and or gold which are the colours of celtic FC whilst the Redskins/49rs/bills/cowboys are very popular with those of us whom were introduced to the weekly coverage on terrestial TV in the eighties.

Just as an example I live in a small town in Norfolk England and off the top of my head my postman is a 49er and I work with a lifelong Redskins fan.

Glasgow Celtic 04-09-2014 10:26 AM

In addition to the above I am a member of the biggest celtic forum on the Web and there is a weekly NFL discussion thread for each week which gets Very busy with *banter* and a competitive fantasy league every new season.

Well there is a fair amount of grass roots football played here at an amateur level, the US air force bases have teams and the brit ball tournament is popular.

The workmate I referred to above played for the Norwich Devils and now coaches the youths.

There are also flag football leagues around the country

RedskinRat 04-09-2014 04:00 PM

I played as a WR ( incredibly ineptly) for the Ealing Eagles in '89. It just fueled my love for the game after I realized how difficult what pro player do, and make it look relatively easy

Been a Liverpool FC fan all my life, but seeing the governing bodies fail to take action against reckless over-spending by billionaire bank-rolled, previously irrelevant teams has left me disillusioned with the game for a few years now.

Anyway a buddy of mine (Eagles fan) advised turning my attention to the NFL back in '08/'09 so and I looked to picking a team. What appealed to me then about the 'Skins were the same things that I grew to love about Liverpool, which were primarily the great heritage and an incredible fanbase who have stuck around despite all the adversity.

Much like the mainland then, the games popularity is increasing all the time here in Eire, with more and more teams getting involved in the IAFL on both sides of the border.

For what is worth if I had a vote in the US it would be Democrat as I'm a born and bred socialist and used to be a labour party member at one point, but here like in the states honourable people are not elected anymore just career politicians.

A crying shame on all of us.

Very interesting thread!

I am a french fan of the Redskins.

My link with the Redskins is coming from some part of of my family living in Virginia and who contaminated me with the "Burgundy & Gold Virus".

You should know that the french mostly support soccer, rugby or the NBA (because of Tony Parker and Joakim Noah now), but they absolutely don't understand the NFL. So, in the beginning, it was pretty cool to support a team completely unknown here. It was like having my own team to cherish.

Then, I think the virus spreaded inside me, bringing the high hopes in May after the spending during the off-season and the high despair in December when I realize the Redskins won't make the playoffs... again.

Neverthless, I always stuck with this team. For its history. For its spirit. For its loyal fanbase.

Now, I am very proud to wear my Redskins jersey, walking in the Champs Elysées in Paris, whereas most of the french don't know what it could represent.

Hail To the Redskins! Gloire aux Redskins!
