Pick 78 - Spencer Long - G - Nebraska

Spencer Long, OG, Nebraska, NFL Draft - CBSSports.com - NFLDraftScout.com
STRENGTHS WEAKNESSES He is a nasty mauler with aggressive hands and is the type of blocker who fights through the echo of the whistle and grinds on every snap. Long shows good quickness off the snap, can get to the second level and wastes little time attacking, but has stiff hips and lacks ideal flexibility when he gets out in space. Although he's not shy about engaging and getting feisty with his limbs, Long needs to do a better job staying balanced and latching on to control defenders. He isn't a household name, even in Big Ten country, but he might be the best interior blocker out of the Big Ten. PLAYER OVERVIEW After not seeing playing time as a freshman, he started every game as a sophomore and a junior, earning Second Team All-American honors in 2012. Long ranked third on the team in career starts when he suffered a season-ending knee injury last October.
ESPN:
Draft Analysis WHAT HE BRINGS Long is coming off a season-ending knee injury, raising concerns about his durability, and he can get knocked off balance in pass protection, making this a reach. He does have a prototypical frame for a guard prospect, though, and he's an effective positional blocker who can wall off his assignments long enough to create a seam for the ball carrier. HOW HE FITS Washington wants to become more physical inside, and Long is a decent blocker who should fit perfectly in this zone scheme. A player like Long can significantly upgrade Washington's rushing attack.
|

He also seems to be pretty fast though I'm not sure if I would consider him big. He actually looks kind of skinny. [YT]5SsNKYfdKC4[/YT] First string on our relay team for sure. |

There was a time back in 2012 where I saw Omoregie Uzzi a guard for Georgia Tech at a supermarket in downtown Atlanta. The only reason I was able to learn his name came about because he was wearing GT Football sweatpants with his number on it so I pushed out other important information for the next hour to look up 77 for Georgia Tech when I got home. Turns out he was "only" 6'2 315 but seeing him down the aisle he seemed 6'5 330. Regardless anyone playing D1 football in the front 7 is likely going to seem big to anyone of average height, myself included (5'9). |

Like the position chosen. Just concerned with the injuries this guy has suffered. Sounds like if he is healthy, he can be good. Just that health is a hard issue to deal with in the NFL. |

Yeah, I agree. I think it pushes Chester out and forces Leribeye and Gettis to realize its their time to prove something or move along. He will probably sit a year looking over there shoulders trying to get time. If the young guards dont step up, then they will look for Long to push them out in a year. |
Re: Pick 78 - Spencer Long - G - Nebraska
I'm willing to bet that if they haven't said it already (haven't really looked up the follow up reports yet from the FO) but I'm guessing that its going to be explained something like:
"In terms of talent he was one of the better players in the draft. Had it not been for the injury we think he would have been picked sooner." |
Re: Pick 78 - Spencer Long - G - Nebraska
I don't know, this kinda feels like the fatboy pick. I know they're very different but just don't like this one for some reason.

Might not be too far off lol
Tarik El-Bashir @TarikCSN Gruden on Moses and Long: "They're big, yeah. They're big."
|

Yeah so we go from a focus on smaller (regardless of talent/potentia/ability/red flags) to a focus on bigger (regardless of talent/potential/ability/redflags). |
Re: Pick 78 - Spencer Long - G - Nebraska
Not a huge fan of this pick, unlike the first two, but he's an OL with obvious upside. And I've been wanting OL, so I ain't complainin'.

Long is a walk on and team captain at Nebraska. All of that speaks to the opposite of the fatboy pick, for me at least. This is the pick I like the most for the day. |

he also did 28 BP reps, the only thing that bothers me is no one had rated a 3rd round pick. Did the Redskins think another team was about to take him ? |

This is just plain false. BTW, some of your posts are so extremely negative as to be ridiculous. For example, I don't understand how you could compare one of our draftees to Fat Albert. Perhaps your current environment is to blame. Get out of Philly before you start booing Santa Claus. |
Re: Pick 78 - Spencer Long - G - Nebraska
SIAP
Long might play center |

I forget whether it was McShay or Kiper, but one of them said on the ESPN broadcast that he had Long rated #25 overall (First Rounder) until he got hurt. I suspect that the Skins are following their draft board (which is what Bruce said they would do) without worrying about in-draft strategy. You may have noticed how quickly the Skins made their picks. Maybe the players they drafted were simply at the top of the Skins' draft board at the time they were picked. Personally I couldn't care less where others have players rated as long as we get players who can help us get better and deeper. This pick reminds me that Russ Grimm was a third round pick. I lived in Pittsburgh at the time of the 1981 draft and I thought that Russ was the best college center I had ever seen when he was at Pitt. Also in 1981, the Skins signed the great Joe Jacoby as an UDFA. So, we'll see what we have in Long when he gets here. |
Re: Pick 78 - Spencer Long - G - Nebraska
At a loss on how this is best player available in the third. Not real happy
If this is what's to come by Scott, Bruce, morocco and x qb,.... |

These are the kind of picks that make me nervous. If he stays relatively healthy and gets back to pre injury level, he probably would have been rated BPA. This pick isnt about developing, its whether he can stay healthy. If he can... good pick. If he cant... wasted pick. But given that his right knee has had problems for 2 years in a row (Torn meniscus 2 years ago, Torn MCL last year), hes close to having the injury prone label. Hopefully this guys knee doesnt have chronic problems. |

To me, this makes the pick much much worse. Kevin fucking Barnes logic just fucking disgust me. |

That's not what it sounds like. Gruden: “They’re big, but it’s not necessarily big that we’re looking for. Size is important. They have some big defensive linemen nowadays, and we want to protect our quarterback the best way we can. But also we want to be athletic and get out and run the football. We’ve been a very successful zone-running team here with athletic offensive linemen. But there’s going to come a time we’re going to have to throw the ball, and we’ll need some size in there, and these guys will compete.” NFL draft 2014: Washington Redskins add depth, address roster needs in second and third rounds - The Washington Post |
Re: Pick 78 - Spencer Long - G - Nebraska
Q: Are you surprised by the lack of production by the back-ups on the offensive line?
VC: Are you talking about all the sacks and stuff? |
Re: Pick 78 - Spencer Long - G - Nebraska
Yeah this was a reach. Guy could have been had in the 4th easily, if not the 5th. His balance is terrible, constantly falling down.
He's a replacement-level interior lineman who will sit on the bench and do nothing on special teams. Not a fan. |
Re: Pick 78 - Spencer Long - G - Nebraska
I think this is the draft that the current personnel front office will show their worth. Personally I think they get too cute with the picks and outsmart themselves by picking unknown under the radar players. Almost seemingly going out of their way to do so.

Re: Pick 78 - Spencer Long - G - Nebraska
I am starting to love this pick. I have made myself like this draft like I do with every Redskins draft.
Here is what he did at his pro day. Just so everyone knows he did not tear his ACL. He tore his PCL and MCL. Not nearly as serious as the ACL. He is ready to go. Long said he thinks he did what he had to do in testing two weeks ago. The 6-foot-5, 316-pounder ran the 40-yard dash in 5.03 seconds and posted a 4.4 in the pro agility and a 7.23 in the three-cone drill. All of those times would have put him among the top 10 guards at the combine. Who are the unknowns? Everyone they drafted this year are pretty easy to find in any draft mag or online rankings. |

I would have been concerned about the FO if they had picked only the players I thought they should pick. Then, clearly, they wouldn't have been doing a thorough job. How many people here knew much of anything about Alfred Morris before the Skins picked him last year? Answer: Very few. How many people here wanted the Skins to draft Shane Skov this year when nobody drafted him (not that he can't make a roster)? Answer: Many. The stark naked truth is that most of us on this site - myself included - don't know jack about drafting players. We don't even know the criteria the Skins use to evaluate players. In short, we're in the dark. We can only hope that the FO did a good job. |
