Camp battles this year are gonna be interesting as hell. Ton of them going on, and I'm guessing some of them will run into the season.

Having both Thomas and t jax back competing have me feeling gud about safety. It's early, but Rambo running with the second team is interesting.

I'm getting really excited about Keenan Robinson finally being healthy. I've been hearing a lot of really good things about his performance so far this offseason.

Yup. Last year he had a great summer before getting injured. Haslet is a big fan, I want this dude to stay healthy and just get an opportunity to ball.

I hope Robinson can play. If I were the skins coaches I wouldn't count on it. I was hoping they would build some depth at the linebacker position especially inside... but maybe there are some young studs no one knows about.

This probably will be his last chance before the team moves on. Hope he does well.

You gotta think at some point the "throw everything at the wall and something will stick" approach to safety will pay off just a once finally.

If there's a good time to tweak a hammy, now is the time. He'll be right for training camp, and probably sooner.

You called it the worst FA signing, didn't you? I just read that as you making a judgement on the signing before the guy takes the field.

Based on his play, we grossly overpaid. That is what I said.

Then I said we will find out soon enough if he is worth it.

They signed three FA ILB's, two of whom have started a number of games. This year's draft was weak at ILB, if that's where you were hoping to pick up some help.

The good thing is, those FA ILBs we signed will likely be depth as long as Keenan stays healthy. Gruden sounds very impressed with him.
Mentally, he's in good shape. Coach Olivadotti has done a great job with getting him up to speed. Physically, he looks excellent to me. He's running, he's long, and he can run sideline-to-sideline in pass coverage. He's disruptive. He gets into zones and is a big guy to throw over. He can cover tight ends, he can cover backs. We have high hopes for Keenan and we love the progress he's making. Just from a short period of time, he's one of the guys on the field that stand out: "Is that Keenan again?"
That sounds great.

Im trying to remember who here blew off Keneen because he couldnt cover Dez Bryant for like one play when he scored. He/she was like "that guy is garbage". I think it was Dez. I remember laughing so hard at that.

im interested to see if any of them hopefully end up being a lorenzo alexander or khary campbell type player.

ST ace and solid plug-in capabilities.

Re: Let's talk OTA's

Good stuff to hear about Robinson as he'll be much more athletic than Fletcher. Not going to get too excited over an OTA practice. It's been a while since he's even seen a field in a regular season game. We've still got a lot of question marks at ILB. Hopefully he can stay healthy and give us the spark we need at that position.

Re: Let's talk OTA's

I remember reading about how one of Robinson's strengths was pass coverage. Fletcher was always in the right spot, but his size really prevented him from defending higher passes.

Re: Let's talk OTA's

On the ESPN redskins Blog, "....Brian Orakpo said he’s worked a lot on using his hands better as a pass-rusher, thanks to outside linebackers coach Brian Baker. He’s having Orakpo do drills to emphasize this, something that has not been done in the past."
They report this like it is a good thing. Not sure who it is a knock on more, the coaches not named Brian Baker, Orakpo or both. How is this possible? Is this a joke?
Amazing that our top rookie pick has more pass rush moves than our six year pro who makes $11M a year. Maybe Orakpo can take some coaching tips from our rookie. Orakpo is not a student of the game, that is fo sho, it seems in the past he has relied more on his God given talent than working on his skills. Is there anything else that "has not been done in the past?"
Working on tackling or pass Coverage? Weak!

Re: Let's talk OTA's

New coaches bring new techniques, what's wrong with that?

Defensewins 06-04-2014 08:51 PM

Re: Let's talk OTA's

New coach, but definitely not new techniques.
The technique of using your hands in pass rush has been around since Deacon Jones played the game. Rule changes were put in place in 1977 called the "Deacon Jones rule" because Deacon used his quick hands so well to head/helmet slap his opponent that it would leave his opponents dumbfounded.
Pass rush moves like: swim, grab, rip/inside, spin, under, counter/club, bull rush and speed rush have been in existence for decades.
Why Orakpo and his former coaches have never worked on this in practice before is what is glaring. Probably explains why Orakpo only has two pass rush moves speed and bull rush.

MTK 06-04-2014 09:14 PM

Re: Let's talk OTA's

Who's to say he doesn't do work with his hands on his own? If coaches aren't running these drills in practice that's on them.

I get what your saying, but maybe focus wasn't there with the hands as opposed to other techniques with the past coaches. All I can say is I hope this will propel Rak as a stronger pass rusher. I'm ready to ball with this new revamped d-line, pass rushing scheme and players

MTK 06-04-2014 09:37 PM

What I meant was new coach = new approach/emphasis on different techniques, drills, etc. obviously Baker isn't inventing the use of hands lol.

Thanks for that good read.

Hearing a lot of great stuff about the young guys. Phillip Thomas, Amerson, Breeland, Reed, Murphy, Keenan, etc., all seem to be healthy and performing well. While they are still in shorts and a lot of the compliments are coming courtesy of coach speak, it gets me excited for the season.

If a few of the younger guys like Keenan, Thomas, Reed, and Amerson stay healthy and perform well in big roles, that would be huge. And if our pass rush can get around 45-50 sacks, RG3 stays healthy, our STs perform better, and the WRs can at least come close to living up to our expectations, we could be a serious NFC East contender. Not at the level of the great NFC teams, but good enough for a serious division title push. The biggest question is whether Jay knows what he's doing, 'cause he's got some talent to work with.

In breaking news, Redskins coaches have now decided they are going to teach the forward pass.
