All things offseason discussion part II
Figured this as good a time as any to move away from the last one. We all know the name thing can drag on forever.
That said, I didn't see it mentioned anywhere that Jarius Byrd had back surgery and I know Matty posted about TJ Ward getting charged with assault. Seems like they were two guys alot of fans wanted that we may now be glad that we didn't. Byrd got a whole lotta of money to play safety with back issues. And does anyone know what the Redskins schedule in June is? I couldn't really find much on it, and know that it's not going to be a lot of exciting information. Finally, for sake of making some level of discussion possible, which division or conference opponent's offseason has most interested you? I haven't seen many folly filled moments from the Cowboys, which you usually can count on them for. And the Eagles/Giants also both seem to just be a bit bland. |

If people are surprised by Byrd's injury...

Giants got better, through both the draft and FA. Odell Beckham will be the new DeSean, i.e., the division rival that kills us twice a year. And with a better running game and improved OL, they should be a solid East contender for a few years yet(unless Eli goes back to his pick-slinging ways). NFC East will be extremely interesting this year with 2 improved teams, Giants and Redskins; reigning champion Philly who didn't really get better but didn't get worse either; and Dallas, who should have a great offense, provided Dez and Romo stay healthy, but a terrible defense. Still probably the worst division in the NFL, but improved, IMO. |

to early to call those signings bad imo. eagles fans could be saying the same thing about D Jax right now .... the most interesting div rival to me this year will be all of them. i know its cliche but its true to me this year more than most since it seems everyone is even with questions marks w philly leading the opinion polls by a nose ... now that i think about it .. i hope we stick it to philly twice this year more than the giants or boys. |

I tend to think they got worse in two ways 1) at backup qb, instead of Vick - who was good as a backup, they have Sanchez and Barkley. That's quite a drop in talent in my opinion. and 2) the loss of Jackson. I don't really see that their draft or FA's pickups improved them significantly. And I love Sproles, but I don't see him and Shady being the type of two headed threat, but instead suitable substitutes for either. So no real gain in my opinion. |

So no real gain in my opinion.
Losing Jackson was huge for them. There was an article posted on here that showed that Jackson had a long catch on the vast majority of the Eagles's scoring drives. The drives where he didn't have a catch very rarely resulted in points. But he and Vick were the two biggest offseason losses, and they replaced those two with plenty of talent through both draft and FA. First of all for the receiving corps, they resigned Cooper, who's a solid receiver; then they drafted Jordan Matthews, who isn't as good or fast as Jackson but will put up solid numbers early, IMO; signed Sproles as you mentioned; and then they have Maclin returning from the ACL injury. Plus, they have the development of Zach Ertz to look forward to. So they don't have the explosiveness anymore that DJax offered, but make no mistake, they'll still put up points. On Vick: yeah, there's a chance Foles gets injured, but a backup QB isn't that big of a loss. That's just on offense. On defense, they signed Malcolm Jenkins, who is now their best safety. Plus, they drafted Ed Reynolds and and still have Brandon Boykins in the slot, so their secondary will be improved. And most importantly, they drafted Marcus Smith, who was second in the nation in sacks, behind only our man Murphy. In short, they lost one of their best players, but added some talent on both sides of the ball that pretty much made up for that huge loss. Edit: Fixed the first paragraph for clarification purposes. |

Vick wasn't even playing.
How is he a big loss? |
Re: All things offseason discussion part II
Vick wasn't even playing.
How is he a big loss?
Vick was able to come in and run Kelly's offense, and had pro-experience. Before last year's run, Foles was not looking like the real deal, maybe he has matured and will be great, but if he reverts back to form, the lack of a quality back up will bite them (like it would any team in the NFL). |

Gruden Quotes, via @Redskins tweets:
Washington Redskins @Redskins 15m On LB Keenan Robinson: "You don't have to be a Ray Lewis-type player to be a successful MLB. ... I'm more about the play than the talk." Washington Redskins @Redskins 17m Gruden on OL Josh LeRibeus: "He's in good shape, and he's made some improvements from what I saw last year." Washington Redskins @Redskins 18m Gruden on the upcoming #SkinsCamp practices with the Patriots: "I was open to the opportunity." Said it changes the flow at practices. |

Re: All things offseason discussion part II
Vick wasn't even playing.
How is he a big loss?
I have to agree. The switch from Vick to Foles and getting rid of Vick was win-win. Vick is a walking injury waiting to happen. Plus he makes too much to be a backup. The eagles are better off. Who cares that the backups are not experienced. They will gain experience. Plus the Eagles have a much improved offensive line. I think they have the best O-line in the NFC East. That is a big advantage when you can run the ball and protect your QB. Takes a ton of pressure off the QB. 49ers and Seahawks have great O-lines/running games and great defense. Great recipe for winning. |

There is no way to know what they can contribute. I agree with you that Jackson was a huge loss for them. Getting Maclin back and the development of Ertz won't be nearly enough to make up for that. With the loss of Jackson, they no longer have any WR who compels the defense to game-plan for him. Sproles has been one of my favorite players for years. Nevertheless, I don't see what he gives them that they didn't already have and I think that he has been in decline for the last two seasons. To me, the loss of Vick is a big deal if Foles misses much time due to injury this season because his current backups can't play at all. So I don't think think they're any better than they were last season but they are solid in the trenches, they have a good QB, an above average receiving corps, and a great RB. Overall, they're a good, competitive team and I think they deserve to be the favorite to win the NFC East at this time. |

Clark doesn’t call the defenses—that job belongs to Mike linebacker Keenan Robinson—but he is a constant stream of chatter mixing in keys and encouragement both before and after the snap.
^^ thats the best quote i read from the link from cred. really hope clark and d hall can step in and get our secondary guys lined up right. not sure who that guy will be closer to the LOS. got me a lil worried. |

Re: All things offseason discussion part II
In the interest of trying to keep the discussion off of the name-change thing, I offer these tidbits.
PHOTO: DeSean Jackson trolls LeBron James | Comcast SportsNet Washington Gruden Sees Added Depth On Defense I defintely agree with Jay on improved depth. We didn't add any studs in FA, but we did add a lot of depth in FA and the draft. Especially excited about our OLB corps. Kerrigan and Rak should have breakout years... Rak especially. Not a breakout year in terms of impact because we all know what he can do, but I think he'll cement himself as a top 5 pass rusher. And then you've got Yeti, RJax, and Jenkins beneath them; I think we'll see a little something from Murphy, and hopefully Jenkins shows a little something more as well. Jenkins is an above-average OLB athletic-wise and has a wide variety of pass-rushing moves, so I really hope he sees the field more. If that takes playing STs, I hope he doesn't hesitate this year. |

If so, that's a little surprising, because I think we have a fine group there. Groves is only 29 though, and Gruden has often said how important depth is for pass rushers. |

This is the year for Lynch to get his contract b/c RB's are becoming more and more interchangeable. The game is changing and, while there will always be the need for a power RB, I just don't think anyone is going to win a SB with a power run game that isn't either a beneficiary of or a diversion from the passing attack. Not saying the run game is going away, just say it's gonna change. At 29, with two years left on his contract, he either gets a new deal or takes what he can get next year on the open market as a 30 year old back. Just not seeing where he has any leverage. |
