Will probably still be years in the courts with appeals and such. So its still not a done deal, but the fight will get more interesting now. |
Re: Redskins Trademark cancelled
Fight definitely not over yet, but this isn't a good sign for us.
|
Re: Redskins Trademark cancelled
Yeah, this is a potential game changer. No way the team or NFL allows an untrademarked team name to exist. Way too much money that could be made without the NFL being able to do a thing about it. Nothing will happen immediately but I wouldn't be surprised to see a name change by 2017 at the latest.

Re: Redskins Trademark cancelled
To me it seems like this isn't worth fighting anymore. Snyder should just change the name and be done with it. We live in such a over sensitive society now. My goodness.

Re: Redskins Trademark cancelled
Does this mean we can go back to calling this site "redskinswarpath.com?"

Bullshit!! Wait till you see a prime time game between the Washington Redtails vs the Cowboys. |

This is almost the place I've come to. But giving up the name is giving up so much, for nothing in return. If we knew that the majority of Native Americans were offended and that by dropping the name we were improving people's lives, I could stomach it. But, no... we're dropping the name, and in turn, so much of the team's legacy, just because a few Native Americans are "offended". It makes me sick. |
Re: Redskins Trademark cancelled
with the understanding that appeals could stretch this out who know's how long - the writing seems to be on the wall here.

Yeah, if this holds up and the Redskins start losing money by the boatload since they no longer have the trademark, I expect a pretty quick resolution to this. It's a damn shame. |
The game has only just begun.

Re: Redskins Trademark cancelled
Yea I give this a wait and see approach. Believe I read that this happened before in the 90's but was overturned. Personally I wouldn't want to see the name changed
|
Re: Redskins Trademark cancelled
It was fun while it lasted. Onto a new name. No doubt people in DC pressured these fools into doing this.

Re: Redskins Trademark cancelled
My understanding is similar things happened in '92 and '99. If that's the case, isn't there plenty of prior evidence on our side to fight the PTO? Doesn't the PTO have to prove something has changed with these trademarks to make them all of a sudden invalid due to being offensive? It seems as if this is more grandstanding by the PTO rather than anything that will be effective.
In case you couldn't tell, I'm not a lawyer.. If we do end up with a new name, I want us to be something completely different. I no longer want to bring attention to the native american community in any way, shape or form. Being as the D.C. area teams have a way of picking terrible names for teams, I'm worried. Additionally, here is a link to the US PTO's decision: USPTO TTABVUE. Proceeding Number 92046185 |

Yes, there's still hope. I hope he does but it just seems like such a headache at this point. Obama has even ran his mouth about it. SMH. |
Our name will b changed by 2016
|
Re: Redskins Trademark cancelled
Its safe to say that this is the beginning of the end. I suspect the Skins and the NFL already have the team's new name and logo ready to launch when the time comes.
|
Some of you have way too much faith in the legal system to think this is anywhere near a quick resolution. They've been down this trademark road before.
|
Re: Redskins Trademark cancelled
Time is not on the Redskins' side. The people are not on the Redskins' side. Change is coming.

This shows how much this has not been an issue in the past. Everyone is all over facebook posting about the trademark ruling, even though it has happened before. Everyone is posting on facebook the commercial that ran during the NBA finals, even though the commercial ran before...I believe it was during the Oscars, can't remember. |
Re: Redskins Trademark cancelled
Synder should change the name to the Fed's . Put the US Capitol on one side of the helmet , the White house on the other . Put a second " Big screen " in the Stadium , show the ticker with our national debt running . Every Sunday ( or MNF ) , I would have on the screen a picture of " ass- of the week ", and have a politician's name and picture showing what they have done to hurt working Americans . Our home opener , have harry reid dressed like a dallass cowboy , nyg and an iggles cheerleader .

Re: Redskins Trademark cancelled
The Redskins have managed to keep the trademark based on technicalities. They better have another technicality up their sleeve this time around because things are most definitely different this time.

Re: Redskins Trademark cancelled
This is ultimately a losing battle. They are losing in the media, losing in the general court of public opinion and now in the courtroom. There is no upside in prolonging a public battle where you end up just looking like an ass. Even if they win and are able to keep the name, the damage to the brand is constantly happening every time the story recycles. At some point the smart move is to make the move, put a spin on it like it's your idea/coming to your own conclusion and make a positive out of it.

Social media and digital mobilization of a movement didn't exist when it was ruled on before. The commercial never ran on television before, although it existed on YouTube. |
Re: Redskins Trademark cancelled
This blows monkey ass.
I have been collecting burgundy and gold Redskins t shirts sweat shirts and jerseys and coffee cups etc etc for about 47 years. And now pinhead politicians and treehuggers are going to make it all stop. This country is turning into an over regulated Brady Bunch circle jerk. |

Re: Redskins Trademark cancelled
And the "winners" in this issue if the name is argued in court? Attorneys (like everything else).
Why is this just now an issue? Oh yeah, POLITICS...jeeze. Hope it can be faught successfully without costing a bizzillion dollars. |
Re: Redskins Trademark cancelled
Woohoo! So glad this has happened. Another victory for justice and perseverance! The sooner we get this name changed the sooner we can get back to forgetting Native Americans exist!

Agreed. Regardless of who is "right," we look really bad by continuing to fight. Might as well cut our losses. |

Exactly! Just as I was having a heated discussion with a Redskins fan on another board, what I tried to tell him was that if the name is changed to something that does not relate to Native Americans at all (he doesn't want the new name to be associated with NA's) then Native Americans will continue to disappear from the public's eye. Which means, the government will continue to ignore their needs. Nobody who has argued for a name change has even remotely thought about the real issues Native American tribes deal with. That's what sucks. Attorneys and fat cats get richer, the poorer get poorer, and special interest groups continue to run the country. It's all pretty shameful. |
Re: Redskins Trademark cancelled
Here's the story
Of a lovely lady Who was bringing up three very lovely girls All of them had hair of gold Like their mother The youngest one in curls It's the story Of a man named Brady Who was busy with three boys of his own They were four men Living all together Yet they were all alone 'Til the one day when the lady met this fellow And they knew that it was much more than a hunch That this group must somehow form a family That's the way we all became the Brady bunch The Brady bunch, the Brady bunch That's the way we became the Brady bunch |
Re: Redskins Trademark cancelled
Oh, and looking up the trademarks, I've noticed that names like the Washington Warriors and the Washington Bravehearts have been trademarked by a Philip Martin McCaulay. Anybody know how this cat is? I could go for either one of those names (or just go back to Braves), but it seems like if this guy has it trademarked, he'd probably want millions for the name. I looked up Washington Braves and don't see that name trademarked.

Re: Redskins Trademark cancelled
No way....eff the indian crap from here on out.
I would totally distance the organization from it. |

I think one of Snyder's neighbors trademarked one of those names. |

I would be offended if they called themselves the Washington Generals. Do we really want to be associated with the basketball team that is punked by the Globetrotters all the time? The Washington Federals means a complete rebranding of colors, logos - a new identity. It's like putting the Redskins in witness protection. |

I thought I remember hearing about that, but didn't know if that was a "good" thing for Snyder, or if his neighbor was doing this to keep Dan from choosing another Indian name? He also has Bravehearts trademarked as well. Seems like the last time someone looked this up, the trademark had expired, but it shows the trademark has been renewed and is live. |
