How many PPG will the offense Score?
I was reading the most recent Keim article:
What the Washington Redskins' O must produce to get to the playoffs - ESPN Based on his research, it looks like a team needs to average about 22-24 PPG to be a serious playoff contender. I can see this offense making 21 PPG on average. Not sure it will have the oomph this year to get over the hump. In my opinion, ST and Def contribute to the offense's PPG through TO's and field position. While I think the offense has the weapons to do score >21 PPG, I also think the defense and ST have to provide assistance and I am simply not convinced they can do so. If the offense is consistently put in a position of needing long drives to score, I just don't see it succeeding. Again, not b/c it can't score on long drives but just that doing so consistently is very difficult. So ... I see an offense that scores 21 PPG. Anyone else think higher or lower? Does 21 PPG get us into the playoffs? |
Re: How many PPG will the offense Score?
How many possesions do you get on average per game? Is it 8-10? I read that some where. I think the Redskins need to score on at least half of those possesion and TDs over FGs will get you to 28 points. Now that's unrealistic, but the Broncos were doing it consistantly last year. They also scored on way more than half their possesions as well.
A couple of seasons when the Redskins went 6-10, if they could have scored 21 pointsin every game, they would have made the playoffs. "First team to 21 wins", sounds like a basketball game I use to play, but it works in the NFL as well. |
Re: How many PPG will the offense Score?
Its really tough to say how much we can score with a new scheme coming in and to see how are players react in it.
I really hope our special teams can get their act together because that could be the difference. |
Re: How many PPG will the offense Score?
21 sounds about right.
But it's more fun to think about the potential. If the offense stays reasonably healthy, we could be top 5 in PPG easily. That would likely require at least 27 points on average(the top 5 in PPG last year had at least 27), but with the players we have, how unlikely is almost 4 TDs a game? Somewhat unlikely, I suppose, but we do have some darn talented players on offense. If Griffin is more 2012 than 2013 and Reed stays healthy, it's not out of range. Cincinnati put up 26.9 on average, and look at their offensive talent versus ours. I really don't see 27 PPG happening, at least not this year, but it's fun to think about. |

I think that 20 PPG is a something that should be achievable (2 TDs and 2 FGs a game) meaning that we do score on half the offensive possessions but balanced with FGs vs TDs |

C'mon, man! I agree that 27 PPG is overly optimistic, but 20? That's less than last year! With an improved RG, healthy Reed, and the addition of Jackson, surely we'll get at least 21. I know, I know, we have a new HC, OC, and playcaller, but the offensive personnel appears to be substantially better than last year. In addition, Gruden improved the Bengals' PPG from 20.1 the year before he was hired to 21.5 his first year. Expecting us to regress seems a bit in the other ditch. I suppose if those points came all throughout the game instead of mostly in the 2nd half, it would still be an improvement, but I gotta be honest, I'm expecting more PPG than last year. |
Re: How many PPG will the offense Score?
if i had to predict at this moment, (which is impossible w new staff/scheme)
i foresee our run game taking a huge hit in production which will lead to a less open passing attack i believe what the shannys brought to the table is being very much under-appreciated i just hope RG3 can overcome obstacles. PPG prediction (right now) = 17? |
Re: How many PPG will the offense Score?
Yeah it will come down to possessions. Our defense ahs to be able to get off the field. They don't have to dominate but we need a couple or three 3 and outs a game. We were lucky to get one last year.
|
Re: How many PPG will the offense Score?
I see no reason why the offense cannot score, on average, 21 points per ball game. I'd say between 21-24 points will win you more games than you'll lose. The biggest issue will be how many points allowed will the defense allow?
|
Re: How many PPG will the offense Score?
We are going to have to score at least 24 to 27 pts a game, how many will we score is the BIG answer.
|
Re: How many PPG will the offense Score?
10 + 11 = 21!

Re: How many PPG will the offense Score?
no 1st play of season flea flickers lol
this offense is gonna move. morris off tackle. morris slam. playaction pierre get it, playaction desean get it. gonna be fierce. rgs back. i didnt feel like that last year going in... but hes back with something to prove. how many points exactly? i dont know. |
Re: How many PPG will the offense Score?
Just a little less than our defense normally gives up.

Re: How many PPG will the offense Score?
It comes down to Griffin and players staying healthy. If Griffin can become a better pure passer then I see 30 points or even more. If you put Drew Brees in this offense he's getting 5,000 and 35 td's or more. Although Griffin may not get those type of numbers next year, we need to see him going towards that direction. The pass catchers and rb here are too good to be scoring 21 points a game.

With Polumbus and others, we're probably still better at run-blocking than pass protection.

Re: How many PPG will the offense Score?
How can we not score more with a healthy, prepared RGIII and the strengthening of the WR and OL groups? Best case Top 10 offense in points. Worst case middle of the pack in points. I'd guess that we can improve to 24 PPG.
We were 17th in Total Yards last season but we didn't stick the ball in the end zone enough. With more and better weapons, we should be able to fix that. BTW, I do not agree with those who think the running game will suffer under Jay Gruden. The Bengals (no offense intended to people from India or Tigers) ran the ball just fine. Jay will certainly make good use of a weapon like Alfmo. |
Re: How many PPG will the offense Score?
My glass is half full... We should easily be putting up 3 scores a game. No questions asked.

Re: How many PPG will the offense Score?
Yea it boils down to Griffin dropping back though. Last year he had alot running thru his head i think. He likes to be able to move, avoid pressure, and make a throw downfield. Couldnt do that last year. I think Moses will help with that.
And staying on the brightside.. We no longer have scrubs, yea i said it, like josh morgan NOT GETTING OPEN, and tipping up passes to the defense, there was a good 5 ints last year that actually touched our wrs hands and ended up ints. Horrible, ball security this year. Were improved. |
Re: How many PPG will the offense Score?
I, too, agree that jay gruden won't abandon the run as a lot are saying. He's stepping into a team that has a very dynamic run offense. All things considered, I think the skins can rak up some serious points this year. It all boils down to if the d can keep the opposing offense off the field. We have too many players on offense to discredit their ability to put major points on the board....
|
I see Gruden playing to our strengths. That means pounding the rock with plenty of play action off that. The run game scheme isn't going to change much if at all. Still plenty of zone stuff. In the pass game probably a lot of quick stuff, screens, slants, etc.

Re: How many PPG will the offense Score?
Griffin seems to be back to his old self, Garçon will be healthy, and Jackson provides the consistent deep threat we've been missing. Throw in Reed who could dominate at TE if he stays concussion free, and this offense might really hum. 24-27ppg doesn't seem out of the realm of possibility at all.

Re: How many PPG will the offense Score?
Finishing drives will be the key. Tandler just wrote an article about that, it was a big problem in 2013:
Need to Know: Unfinished drives were costly for 2013 Redskins | Rich Tandler's Real Redskins |

From Rich Tandler's Blog: "The Bengals attempted 1,764 passes from 2011-2013. Coincidentally, that is exactly as many passes as the Redskins under Mike and Kyle Shanahan attempted. Gruden’s past and present teams tied for 19th in the NFL in pass attempts. The Lions led the league in pass attempts with 2,128 while the 49ers threw 1,430 times, the fewest in the NFL." |
Re: How many PPG will the offense Score?
Can't believe most you guys predicting 21, that matches last years total and puts the Skin offense in the bottom 10. I think they will at least ascend to 24-27 ppg with a healthy Griffin and be above average. It is the defense that concerns me.

Re: How many PPG will the offense Score?
Maybe someone has already said, but how many ppg did the Bengals average? I tend to think we will be in that area maybe +1 for a better qb

Yep, post #4. The Bengals averaged 26.9 PPG in 2013, but you have to remember they have a better O-line, an elite receiver, and two good TEs; plus Gruden had been there 3 years. 27 PPG isn't a realistic expectation for us... at least this year. |

So I would say we shouldn't be surprised if we match them, and if we underperform them by a TD a game, that would be a disappointment. |
Re: How many PPG will the offense Score?
i didnt realize scoring has gone up so much over the past 5 years or so.
my 17 ppg or so call seems unreasonably low in comparison to numbers being thrown around on here even though i do think we take a step back next year w the new scheme etc. i think i am permanently scarred by all those inept offense years under spurrier/gibbs/zorn where we went large stretches w/out cracking 20. |
Re: How many PPG will the offense Score?
Edit: Never mind.
@overthemountain Yeah, it's interesting that a 21 PPG offense would have landed you just outside the bottom-10 last year. That almost makes me think 27 is more realistic than my original 21, but I still have reservations about this offense. |
Re: How many PPG will the offense Score?
seems that scoring has gone up every year since 2005 (as expected)
2005 - 20.6 ppg (for entire NFL) 2013 23.4 ppg (NFL) NFL Season By Season Team Offense - Pro-Football-Reference.com Redskins 2013 20.9 '12 27.3 '11 18 10 18.9 09 16.6 (zorn) 08 16.6 (zorn) '07 20.9 (gibbs) 06 19.2 05 22.4 3 things stand out to me 2012 was a very special year for us and i loved it. Zorn was worse than I thought Gibbs II was better than I thought edit - i was inclined to discount the record setting avg PPG of 23.4 last year bc the broncos avg something insane like 37 ppg but going forward i could see one or two teams a year putting up insane scoring numbers. its the norm now to expect offensive records to be broken every year. |

IMO his health is the primary factor in our ability to score points. I'm very comfortable in predicting 24.0 PPG in 2014 as long as RGIII stays healthy. |
Re: How many PPG will the offense Score?
I believe Desean presence alone changes this offense. No DC in the league can afford to put 8 in the box against us it's too risky. That will open lanes for Alfmo to run wild and you have to account for RG3 legs on some plays. The 3 WR, 1 TE, 1 RB I believe will strike much success this year it will keep the D honest too many options to account for at once. I believe we will score between 22-25 PPG this year that will put us close to fight for a wild card berth.

Re: How many PPG will the offense Score?
The weapons are among the best in the league. Only problem is I don't trust anyone outside of Trent Williams on the offensive line. It might be a year or two with Gruden working with that OLine and bringing in new faces before this offense really takes off.

Probably the same as last year, just hope they all don't come in the 4th quarter when we're getting blown out.

Re: How many PPG will the offense Score?
With the weapons RG3 has, the question for me is what kind of offense does Gruden employ?
