2015 Free Agents
Free agency is crucial to rebuilding the team- granted the Redskins do not plan to spend $$$$ on new contracts. Here is a list of the top 10 free agents at each position................. who do you want ?
FYI they now have about $14 million in cap space, this amount will change after cuts, restructuring, and a higher cap amount. http://sports.yahoo.com/news/2015-nfl-free-agents-141400044--nfl.html I want the following (if the contacts are reasonable) Tackles Newton Texas Dunlop San Diego Barksdale St Louis G/C Franklin Denver Hudson KC Wisneiski Oakland S Moore Denver CB T Williams GB |
Re: 2015 Free Agents
I honestly would be fine not dipping into FA this year. I mean if an opportunity opens up to get the right guy at the right price, fine, but we can rollover cap space, and we will need it to sign the few guys we know we want, rather than chasing someone else's guys.
Of course a large part of this is that I am hoping that we will have a very strong draft class based on Scot McCloughan's hire. |
Re: 2015 Free Agents
Im hoping we wait a week or longer in FA before we do anything. Thats where the bargains can be found.
Other than that, im really hoping McC completely ignores the first statement of this thread. Winning the offseason sucks. Draft well and be patient with building the team even if it means we suffer for a couple more years. Do it right this time, no shortcuts. FA isnt crucial to a rebuild at all. FA is used by two types of organizations. Ones that draft well and are trying to get that final piece. Or organizations that have no clue but want to be able to tell the fan base that they are committed and that they are willing to spend money so buy tickets. |

I can definitely see at least one starter-caliber free agent hire for the offensive line. I'm hoping that McC has a better eye to evaluate FAs. |

Which is why I said to wait a week to do so. I didnt say to never sign a free agent. There are starting quality players in FA that we can sign that wont break the bank. We just have to wait for that first week (or longer) to go by where people are overpaying for what are considered the elite players. Let that overpayment period go by and then look at if any of them can help the team on a reasonable contract. Granted you and I seem to be one of the few on this board that think we did a terrible job of developing him and that he can still be salvaged. I got ripped on this board for complaining about the Oline saying we would never develop a QB behind it. That was until Colt got put in then it was the go to excuse for the board. |
Re: 2015 Free Agents
my wish list:
1. FS (make this the priority - someone like tj ward, even if it costs 5 mil per) 2. Guard (replace chester and is insurance if lauvau needs replacing/injured so we dont end up with 2 inexperienced guards starting at the same time) 3. no 3 corner (basically what tracy porter was supposed to be for us last year) after that, hopefully we selectively pick and choose for depth at every position. i dont think you can start and draft a FS unless he is our no 5 pick. Position is too important to not address and i dont trust a rookie at that spot. |

Re: 2015 Free Agents
Mike Iupati, Stefen Wisniewski, Ndamukong Su, Terrence Cody, Brandon Spikes.

Look at how well Wilson has developed behind an elite defense, a solid offensive line, and their elite running game. While we had a good running game, I don't think you can develop a QB in whom you solely depend to win. |

OLB, TE, RB how are these needs? (maybe OLB, but not likely finding a reasonably priced FA upgrade out there) DL/CB, one draft spot, maybe 2 OL and S absolutely 4 picks in this area. If we trade down in one of the first 3 rounds, we should have 4-5 top 100 draft picks. We need to hit on them, for OL, S and maybe DL help. When you list RB or TE you just sound like a pipe dream fan. We have Morris, Helu, Redd, as reasonably proven talents. Likewise Paul, Paulson and Reed are a combo that minimizes the need for using a draft pick at TE this year. Those are both spots where you get cheap FA's, let them compete, and best players stay. Sure, we could use FA's, every team can, but our emphasis should not be on any FA "saviors" at any position. |
Re: 2015 Free Agents
Absolutely not. Say no to free agents unless they happen to be a bargain. We aren't remotely close to contending and we need to get our foundation put up before we can start adding walls or a roof. (which is what FA ends up being)

Copy what Seattle did.
counting on getting a Richard Sherman, and a Byron Maxwell in the late rounds is a questionable strategy. It looks like Seattle traded down several times- they have had extra picks in the last 5 years, including 2 #1 picks in 2010 The Redskins cannot turn things around solely based on 2 drafts- and no free agents |
Re: 2015 Free Agents
My top target would be RT.
I consider this a MUST upgrade position to run a functional offense. Banking on our youth developing or the draft for merely league average production is a long shot. And the best chance for this offense to have success (or any offense for that matter) is to win at the point of attack. Even though youth would be my preference RT carries such a high priority that I would still consider quality starters who are older. RT for me is not a position where I would take a wait see approach, its a 'no fail' mission to upgrade. Targets: Bryan Bulaga Derek Newton King Dunlap Ryan Harrris (who was for a song last offseason) Michael Roos Next position would be FS Again, merely league average production from the FS would be a benefit to the defense. But we don't have anyone of the roster and expecting a production from a rookie draft pick is asking a lot. Targets- Devin McCourty Da'Norris Searcy Tashaun Gipson Will Hill (only makes the list because we're desparate, otherwise I wouldn't have the knucklehead on the list) Chris Clemons DL- We need youth along the DL and instead of signing/re-signing some rather middling players Bowen/Jenkins. I would target: Stephen Paea FA/Draft offseason wants: RT, FS, SS, NB, DL-Pass rusher, OG, TE |

The Redskins cannot turn things around solely based on 2 drafts- and no free agents
This is the year for the Skins to double down on the draft. We basically had two full staffs evaluating college players at all levels- the Skins glorious college scouting depth and McC's private firm. The draft isn't a sure thing but this year ought to be as close as the Skins can get. On the other hand our pro personnel department has been less than stellar, and McC certainly was not sitting around looking at potential FAs. Take this year to load up on draft picks, evaluate the pro personnel on their jobs and get the right crew in for the next year. Next year we should be more balanced in the approach, and hopefully less position needy. Plus we would have the added bonus of actually rolling cap over in the offseason assuming we leave the big name FA alone this year. |

He better plan on a quick (2 or 3 year) turnaround, because McC will not have a job if it takes 4 or 5 years. If they spend wisely, and draft wisely, the Redskins can be good in 2 years. |

Bruce Allen has been here 5 years and he has been involved with personnel in all of them. The real question is if McC can make it 5 years. He didn't in previous stops. |
Allen has been demoted from making any more disastrous personnel moves
He still wasn't fired or outright released. He was not removed from salary cap issues as far as we know. How long did he give Shanahan? How long was VC involved, and Gibbs before that? Part of the reason fans misery has gone on so long is because after his first few years of quick firings, he has tended to let people stay one year to long. But whatever, all this is moot if Scot McC starts effectively bringing talent in through the draft or FA. |
Re: 2015 Free Agents
who was the last personnel guy that Snyder only gave 2-3 years. Sometimes I don't get how perception outweighs reality.
Snyder gave full control to Schottenheimer. Took it back after one year. Gave full control to Cerratto in 2008. Gave it to Shanny after two years (justifiably, still 2-3 years). Gave Allen control after firing Shanny. Now giving it to McCloughan after one year.
All this is not counting Snyder being a habitual meddler. But Danny Boy has gone through head personnel guys nearly as fast as he has gone through head coaches. |
Shanahan was in charge of personnel moves
Allen has been demoted from making any more disastrous personnel moves
Bruce was involved with personnel while Shanahan was here. Although it was announced that Shanahan did personnel alone (just as it was announced with McC), that proved to be untrue. The team announcing that Allen is not involved with personnel and Allen actually not being involved with personnel have proved to be two different things. edit: I apologize for the double post. I had a strange browser fart. |

Re: 2015 Free Agents
Despite all the arguments against expensive FA signings at this time, I don't think FS can wait. We are just way too bad on the back end of the defense. It's absolutely not NFL quality. So, I'd like to see the Skins make a run at signing Devin McCourty.
Since I'm greedy, I'd like to see the Skins try to sign Brian Bulaga, as well. Signing those two players would help to set up a "need-free" draft where trading down would be more palatable to me and probably more productive for the Skins. |

Re: 2015 Free Agents
seriously though, RT and FS are things that we really do need now. no need to break the bank, just get someone competent in here.
|
Re: 2015 Free Agents
FS is the one position where I wouldn't mind signing a legit starter level FA. Having a competent guy back there would go a long ways in helping out our pass rush. Also think a good starter would help Amerson and Breeland develop more than what Clark brought.
|
Re: 2015 Free Agents
What if we moved Amerson to FS - he has played the position before, it is not new to him. His inconsistencies in coverage will be less visible at FS.
Then, instead of signing a FS, we sign a good-quality corner. |

Re: 2015 Free Agents
I've never been a fan of free agency cause it doesn't work. Free agency is like buying a used car. It ran well before you got it, then when you buy it, it doesn't perform like it did in the past. I hope SM stays real quiet this year. Maybe add a piece here and there. This needs to be a year of rebuilding and getting as many young guys on the field as possible. Going to be hard for him to do with Allen and Snyder in the building. Those two clowns love to win the offseason.

SS i like Merriweather as our SS at 1 mil per (injuries, suspensions aside). I think he and breeland are the only 2 starters for us that would start for another NFL team. FS we all hoped thomas would over-perform as a late round pick and possibly earn a starting role, at the least be a solid depth guy. i would not rely on thomas going into next year as a starter. imo he needs a strong and healthy camp to even make the roster. FS is too important for defenses nowadays to rely on an unreliable late round draft pick. poor FS play killed us this past year w clark. FS is like the LT on offense. Its an anchor that effects all parts around it. hutch - you should post more my friend |
