QB controversey in 2005?
vote and discuss
|
Re: QB controversey in 2005?
I'm voting NOT for 2005, but I think there will be on in 2006. Either Ramsey will or will not get it done this year and that will leave us looking at other options. Gibbs has said it's Ramsey's year this year, so I think he will stand by that.
I think 2006 will be a VERY different story. |
Re: QB controversey in 2005?
Wow good poll I think, I vote yes. Redskins fans by nature expect more from their team. If Ramsey starts off well and the Redskins stay in the hunt this is less likely. However I think the first time Ramsey throws an interception or two the Campbell chants will start. We have seen the same thing so many times in the past it is hard to believe it wont happen again.

Re: QB controversey in 2005?
Malcolm this is one of the few times I have ever disagreed with one of your takes...!!
Brunell vs. Ramsey Even HASSELBECK. Johnson vs. George Schrader vs. Williams Schuler vs. MY MOTHER IN LAW |
Re: QB controversey in 2005?
The main reason I stick behind this opinion is because Gibbs left Brunell in it until the bitter end. ALSO, in camp, Gibbs said it would be an open competition with Brunell and Ramsey, this year he said it is Ramsey's year.
|
Re: QB controversey in 2005?
Unless Ramsey really stinks up FedEx, there will be no controversy next year!
|
Re: QB controversey in 2005?
I feel you, Gibbs is known as a man of his word but he also must have a lot of faith in Campbell to take the risk on him. I really think if we are 2-6 by midseason we will see a switch. Would you make a switch? At what point?
|
Re: QB controversey in 2005?
My gut says there will be and that's all I'm going on from now on.
|
Re: QB controversey in 2005?
I agree with Malcolm Connection. If Ramsey slips this season then it's be civil war at Redskins park pre 2006 season.
I don't see Ramsey failing this year. He'll be fine. |
Re: QB controversey in 2005?
now if ramsey gets hurt people are gonna have to tie brunnell down to keep gibbs from putting him in the game then it will be a QB controversy. i dont ever ever ever ever ever wanna see brunnell on the field with a Redskins jersey on and the ball in his hands not even holding for kicks. if Ramsey does not get hurt its sink or swim with Ramsey evaluate after the season no excuses.
|
Re: QB controversey in 2005?
I said No, but that just because I don't want one.
|
Re: QB controversey in 2005?
I voted no.I think Ramsey will start the season and have a solid year.
Its nice to see in the interviews hes had that he says that this is his team and hes the starter.Maybe if he would have done this last year we wouldnt have had to go through 9 weeks of hell. |
Re: QB controversey in 2005?
Ramsey is going in as #1, so there is no controversy. He will start the season as #1, take all the 1st team reps in camp, etc.
if he does poorly, it wont cause a controversy to bring in Brunell...because it is expected. |
Re: QB controversey in 2005?
There won't be a controversy b/c it's quite clear already that Gibbs will pull the rug out from under Ramsey at the first opportunity. Campbell is just the latest manifestation of Gibbs' total lack of confidence in Ramsey. It's a shame, really ...
|
Re: QB controversey in 2005?
Unfortunately yes. If Ramsey or the offense struggles this year, there will be clamors from many to see the rookie in there. Of course, rookie qbs normally lose (the exception that proves the rule-Roethlisburger). I'd rather see Campbell come in and learn the offense and the team before he hits the field, but this is the NFL so I'm sure he'll get an opportunity sooner rather than later, which does not bode well for us because that will mean that Ramsey is either struggling or hurt.

Re: QB controversey in 2005?
Yes, its the nature of Washington football
|
Re: QB controversey in 2005?
By the time he learns the system Gibbs will be gone and we'll have a new system in place.
|
Re: QB controversey in 2005?
I voted yes, but for a different reason than most of you guys. I think that the press will not allow us not to have a QB controversy. If there really isn't one, they will invent one. That is a way to sell papers, and I believe they will do it just to rile us (and Ramsey) up.
I think that Gibbs brought in Campbell for three reasons. 1. Gibbs knows that Brunnel can't push for the starting job again. He needed to bring in a top notch QB to push Ramsey to his full potential. 2. Ramsey could decide that he wants to play free agent next year, and if his year is not great for the Skins, we may not have the money in 2006 to keep him. Locking him up on a long term deal would be a big risk if he does not play well in his fourth year. 3. Gibbs believes we need 2 quality QB's at all times to compete for the superbowl. He knows that almost every year, the QB goes down for a game or two and the backup needs to be able to pull out a win if needed. I don't think that Ramsey losing a few games will get a controversy brewing, but Ramsey losing a few and then getting hurt... then Campbell wins one in his place... look out! Just for the record, Ramsey is my guy and I think he is going to have a career year. |

Re: QB controversey in 2005?
I don't see a controversey starting this year. From what I've read Cambell is 2 yrs away from being a NFL starter. Next year maybe. But it's really Ramsey's job to lose.If he steps up and plays well(like Drew Bress) we might not see Cambell untill 2007 or more.
I think Patrick will be fine.If He can get a few wins to start the year He'll be the toast of the town again. |
Re: QB controversey in 2005?
I voted true. The reason is because the media usually controls whether there is a quarterback contreversy, not the team. As soon as Ramsey has a bad game we'll hear whispers from sportscenter, and the post calling for a change. The fans usually follow suit and then when Dan feel his pocket getting thinner from the loss of fans in the stands, then Gibbs will start to feel it. Also in my opinion I don't think Pat is Gibbs' favorite player anyway, why is that? because he didn't pick him, so therefore he doesn't trust him.

1.) Ramsey takes his lumps under Spurrier. Gibbs comes back and immediately signs Brunell to a huge deal. Even assuming that the starting spot was up for grabs when they started camp (some cynics would argue that the size of Brunell's contract suggests otherwise), signing another quarterback to an outsized contract before Ramsey had played a down for Gibbs falls short of a vote of confidence. 2.) Brunell positively tanks. Gibbs refuses to play Ramsey long after it becomes apparent that Brunell's best days are behind him. 3.) Gibbs declares in December that Ramsey is "our guy." In April, before Ramsey has played a down in the new season, Gibbs sacrifices a bunch of picks to trade up and get another quarterback. |
Re: QB controversey in 2005?
If the Skins are 12-0 right around Thanksgiving time, there will be no QB controversy.
Otherwise... With baseball gone in DC for 34 years, "QB Controversy" has become the national passtime around here. |

oh god... i hope we are not 2-6 at midseason. |

ZackMills or Mr. Elisabeth Hasselbeck...which will it be? Let the controversy begin

I'll take Elisabeth!! :) |
Re: QB controversey in 2005?
Even if Ramsey stinks it up this year, I have a feeling if he is benched, Brunell will more than likely start. I'm sure most will say that's laughable, but I have a feeling it's probable. However, if this does happen, it sure will make for an interesting 2006 season.
|
Re: QB controversey in 2005?
I agree - I have a feeling Gibbs is looking for the slightest excuse to use our record to try to jumpstart Brunell's career!
|
Re: QB controversey in 2005?
Wow! Daseal and Skinsguy actually agreed on something!
|
Re: QB controversey in 2005?
I too, am afraid of the whole Brunell thing. If there is one thing that I completely disagree with Gibbs about, it's his whole veteran thing. I know it worked first time around, and I was OK with him trying it again, but PLEASE do not let Brunell on the field anymore!
|
Re: QB controversey in 2005?
False...Campbell will not be ready to play and no one wants to see Brunell back in there. It's Ramseys team this year...
|
Re: QB controversey in 2005?
I know that I may be reading way too much into it, but reading a couple different articles is suggesting to me Ramsey is fairly confident in next year.
|
Re: QB controversey in 2005?
Let's just hope Patrick plays as well as we think he can. If he does we won't have to worry about any QB controversey.
|
Re: QB controversey in 2005?
I say YES, because Gibbs will allow Campbell to work with the 1st team in mini camp & during the preseason. Thus allowing the media to spin stories off left & right.
|
Re: QB controversey in 2005?
No I do not believe that there will be a QB controversy this year, only because no matter what Gibbs doesnt really like to start rookies, not unless he has to. So I am pretty sure that Ramsey will have Gibbs full support and Ramsey will work out well for us. Also I am not sure if anyone else noticed but when I read articles about Ramsey he seems to have found his confidance(SP) which will be great because there is nothing worse than to have a QB that is always doubting himself...
|
Re: QB controversey in 2005?
I'm pretty sure I voted there will be when this first popped up but that was because I thought the question was about 2006. That is contingent on Ramsey's play this year as much as it is on the development of Cambell. If he makes similar strides this season like he did at the end of last year, this won't be that big of a deal other than possibly increasing his potential trade value. As others have pointed out, Ramsey is the chosen qb of another coaching shift, and u don't shell out as much as the skins did on Cambell for someone who is going to be a back-up. I wouldn't be suprised to see us trade Ramsey next year if Gibbs trusts Cambell enough, or a cheap, safe veteran qb comes in for one year. There r just too many variables right now to predict the outcome of this at this point. I kind of like the prospect of a young, semi-mobile qb in the mold of Doug Williams being the future qb of the franchise, but I can also live with a stronger armed, slightly more mobile version of Mark Rypien leading the team as well. I am now 100 times more eager to see how the qbs fare in training camp than I was this time last week.
as far as this year, we'll only see Ramsey and if absolutely need be Brunnel on the field this year except in preseason of course. |
Re: QB controversey in 2005?
the press will push for one, but brunell is out and campbell is nowhere near ready and besides i think ramsey has got what it takes.touch, strong armed and never say die.
just aanother thing for the team to come together against the press about. |
Re: QB controversey in 2005?
I had a dream last night that Mark Brunell had told Gibbs before the draft that he was going to retire after June and then volunteer at his Youth for Tomorrow program. Now I'm somewhat happy about drafting a QB in the 1st. Ramsey is still the man!!
|
Re: QB controversey in 2005?
Matty, this really has been one of the best threads in a while. I still say yes.
|
Re: QB controversey in 2005?
No. Brunnell will be the #2, Campbell will get very few snaps in practice this year. 2006, we'll see. But not this year. Believe it or not, I think Brunnell will be ok as the backup. I have absolutely no evidence for this, but there you go. Wishful thinking, I guess. No way Gibbs puts a rookie out there. No way.
