Let's talk Brandon Scherff
Good read to kick this off with...
Profile of Iowa's Brandon Scherff, NFL draft's top offensive lineman | The MMQB with Peter King |
Re: Let's talk Brandon Scherff
Holes in pass protection...at 5 u need to pass protect well. Let's hope he can put that part of his game together
|
Re: Let's talk Brandon Scherff
While I think there is little doubt we got the best Offensive Lineman in the draft, this looks more like a need pick than a best available pick (I thought best available would be the strategy). One could argue that it was a bit of a reach, but I'm not mad about it. Maybe they had him graded higher than Williams, White, Beasley...
Should be a solid contributor for a long time barring injury. |
Re: Let's talk Brandon Scherff
I'd like to ask all these pundits complaining that Scherff went to early: if a team was not willing to trade down with the Redskins, how was the team supposed to get him later in the draft? Scherff would have gone four picks later to the Giants.

Re: Let's talk Brandon Scherff
If you think this is a reach then you weren't paying attention to the salaries that very mediocre RTs commanded in free agency this year.
I love this pick. Very consistent player, and most importantly a nasty tone setter that I've been calling for. Laken Tomlinson at the top of the 2nd would be terrific. |

He's incredibly athletic, the footwork issues are coachable. The athleticism isn't. He immediately improves our RT pass protection on athleticism alone, with the potential to develop to pro bowl level with coaching. More importantly, him and Trent will make teams feel it when they play us. Hit, hit, and hit again. We need more of it. |
Re: Let's talk Brandon Scherff
Williams would have been a great pick, but we needed Scherff more. I like the word "Nasty" and don't have a problem with the pick. I want to see the second coming of Russ Grimm or Tre Johnson (minus injuries)

Probably great because our quarterbacks suck. |

Lol yup. But we know gruden loves to throw the ball a ton |
Re: Let's talk Brandon Scherff
Gruden wanted to shift to more power running last year but we simply didn't have the horses, and playing from behind constantly and with a shitty D doesn't help. And with Callahan coming here it's obvious the direction we're moving.

I welcome it for sure...We need to add a rb this draft |
Re: Let's talk Brandon Scherff
Every time I think I that they have finally abused me so much that I am cured of my B&G addiction they suck me back in. I hate that I really, really like this pick more and more with each passing minute.
He's probably gonna suck. |

Re: Let's talk Brandon Scherff
How long has it been since we could call a running play on 3rd and 2 with.....ANY confidence? How cool would it be?
Welcome to the B&G, Brandon Scherff |

Re: Let's talk Brandon Scherff
Sounds like he'll start out at tackle, but will he stay there his whole career? I definitely think he can be an elite guard.
|
Re: Let's talk Brandon Scherff
I want to see this starting OL:
LT Williams LG Lauvao or Moses C Lichtensteiger RG Long RT Sherff |
Re: Let's talk Brandon Scherff
I hope the first thing he does in camp is walk up to Ribeus and call him a pussy.
|
Re: Let's talk Brandon Scherff
What is it not to like? The guy is huge, athletic, and play with a mean streak.
|
Re: Let's talk Brandon Scherff
If Gregory and Collins are available tomorrow when the Redskins pick, who would you pick? Both have red flags. Collins would solidify the OL.
|
Re: Let's talk Brandon Scherff
^If it came down to those two, probably Gregory but either works.
|
Re: Let's talk Brandon Scherff
I'd take Collins over Gregory. Gregory doesn't seem to be a high character guy that loves the game. Plus he's nimble.
|
Re: Let's talk Brandon Scherff
How about S Landon Collins? Supposed best safety in the draft. Ferocious run stopper.
|
Re: Let's talk Brandon Scherff
I think we should draft Gregory. Just a few weeks ago this guy was projected to go in the top ten. If we could still grab in with our second pick would be huge for us.
|
Re: Let's talk Brandon Scherff
VERY excited about this pick. He was #1 on my wishlist.
|
Re: Let's talk Brandon Scherff
I'm happy with this pick, we r building a foundation just like SF did.

Hopefully it doesn't end with an overthrown fade route in the Super Bowl like the 49ers. |

Bingo. Time for a new tone. Trent, Scherff, Pot Roast, Hatcher... I want to see them with fingers in people's face telling them how it's gonna be. I want them so loud and forceful that Rob doesn't even need to lead. |
Re: Let's talk Brandon Scherff
I really like it.
4 positives: - we took BPA - fills huge need at RT where we didnt have a starter - provides some insurance if trent does not agree to an extension - leadership, apparently the guy was a permanent captain at iowa really wish we could lock trent up long term in the near future. his write ups remind me of Brian Balaugas. |
Re: Let's talk Brandon Scherff
I love the impact this has on the running game. In previous seasons we've gotten very predictable when it's been 3rd & short or goalline situations. We always run behind Trent. And why wouldn't we, he was the only one that could consistently clear a path. In 2012 we got away with it because the read option had DEs staying home. But with our move away from it, teams have known that when we need to run, it goes behind Trent.
But now on 3rd & short when everyone knows we're likely to run, they'll have to guess which side it's going to. It causes the defense to spread its resources across the entire formation, increasing the chances of success everywhere along the line, especially directly in front of Trent. I think this makes Trent an even better run blocker because of the easier road he'll face. |
Re: Let's talk Brandon Scherff
good point schneed. this opens up a lot of options, on and off the field.

Re: Let's talk Brandon Scherff
“And I know Jay Gruden a little bit. He wants to bring back some of the history of the Redskins, and if you want to do that, you’ve gotta have the Hogs, man. And Brandon Scherff, a very complete offensive tackle at Iowa that has been well-trained by [Hawkeyes Coach] Kirk Ferentz, will bring something to the Redskins that the Redskins haven’t had in a long time.”
Love this quote from Jon Gruden. |

I would take Collins if he's 100 percent in the clear. You can put him in at LG and we're on our way to getting back to some serious o-line play. |

Sadly, he won't be 100 percent clear until after the draft. Which sucks for him if he indeed had nothing to do with what happened. |
