Hard knocks 2015 texans

First episode was pretty good. Probably the best HK I have seen in awhile.

I really like Bill O, wish we had him. I wonder if when we were searching for a coach if we had Scott M at the time he would have picked us.

JJ makes the show, what a awesome guy.

Hopefully this is a good season has not been good since the Jets.

For the lazy or non-subscribers to HBO here is a good recap focused on the Skins role on HK:

Re: Hard knocks 2015 texans

Except for the brawl, I thought it was a pretty mundane episode. If you're a JJ Watt fan, well, okay, then yes it was a GREAT episode. As the article says, 40 minutes of fluff and a brawl. There was the interminable scene of Wilfork playing basketball with teammates and wives. "Yay! Let's watch a show about football so we can watch a pick-up basketball game." Cut to JJ Watt drinking Gatorade. Cut to fans chanting JJ Watt's name. Cut JJ Watt talking to Vince Wilfork about anything, etc.

I will say this, watching the Houston players bitch and moan about the Skins chirping at them and getting physical with them, left me with the impression that the Skins were pushing folks around a little and doing some solid hitting. Houston coaches and players kept saying "We have to bring it" or "We need to match their intensity" kind of statements. In the end, I got the distinct impression the Skins were the more physical team and the Texans knew it and over compensated, hence The Brawl.

The Texans player's closing statement "Let's get the f*** out of Richmond" says to me that they got their butts chased out of town. I am good with that.

I like Watt too, and, yes, he is awesome. However, if I want fanboy fare, there are plenty of places to get it. The segments of HK which I like best are the real behind the scenes stuff. The look at what it is like to be one of the not-so-famous players, stories about the bubble guys, watching coaches and players break down the x's and o's. In other words, the stuff you don't, and won't, see in the course of the year.

There will be a million stories on Watt this year, lots of looks into his daily routine. At its best, HK gets access into so much more than that.

If this year's segment is just one long JJ Watt fanpic, it will be get pretty old quick.

I agree but it is only episode one. But like most things on TV it is marketed to the masses not the fanatic. You poll must people and they probably want see JJ not Jeff Adams.

I loved O'Brien's opening speech to his coaches.
I love the message that he sends...He believes in every one of the 90ish players and the coaches better have them playing.

Much respect for JJ Watts work ethic, Texans are lucky to have their best player being an absolute workaholic AND leader.

Can someone explain why O'Brien was never interviewed for this job? I guess he wasn't part of the good ole boy network from Tampa. My feeling is that there was no way Snyder and Allen could deal with, or handle a strong personality like that.

Yeah the JJ Watt love fest was a little overboard. But for someone who makes a ton of money, and is the best at his position, he sure isn't sitting around enjoying the pats on the back. Dude works his ass off. Even catches balls on the jug machine, my guess was that he'll be playing more TE for them.

They were interested but Texans moved quickly to hire O'Brien. Texans got a jump on the coaching search that year because they fired Kubiak with 3 games left in the season

Would you want to work for Snyder? I sure as hell wouldn't. Knowing good and well the idiot would make game day QB starter decisions is enough to know I would want no part of him. Better yet, be willing to sacrifice the team just so one guy can be developed. It probably took a 5 year deal just to lure Jay here.

Let's not get carried away with the Bill O'Brien love based on a pre training camp speech, or anything else we see on Hard Knocks (again, it's training camp).

I don't think Gibbs would have been a darling on HK, but he could manage people and he could adjust at halftime like the best of them. Speeches on HK don't impress me.

I rather have Bill over Jay before ever hearing a HK speech from Bill. I am willing to bet Bill is the coach of Houston next year and Jay is working at Taco Bell with RGIII.

Thought it was a great show too. Several players on that team you gotta like including Watt and DeAndre Hopkins. The coach is a solid guy too.

No one said he was a superstar. Just that he's probably a better HC than Gruden. He did a hell of a job at PSU and went 9-7 with no QB last year.

JoeRedskin 08-12-2015 06:02 PM

Re: Hard knocks 2015 texans

I know O'Brien was highly sought after, but I just don't see it.

Yes, he went 9-7 last year, but here's who they beat:
Tennessee (twice) (2-14)
Jax (twice) (3-13)
Oak (3-13)
Us (4-12)
Cleveland (7-9)
Buffalo (9-7)
Baltimore (10-6)

So six of the wins came against teams with double digit losses and only one was against a team with double digit wins. Yes, a win is a win, but that looks like a pretty padded schedule to me.

And, yeah, Penn State was a tough gig, but, after year one he says ""I’m not a one-and-done guy. I made a commitment to these players at Penn State and that’s what I am going to do. I’m not gonna cut and run after one year, that’s for sure." Then, after year two, he's quits for the Texans job. So, one year = not living up to commitment, but two years = living up to your commitment. I mean, technically, he did what he said, but, in my mind anyway, he sure as hell did not live up to the spirit of his words or to his supposed "commitment to th[e] players at Penn State." I am really not a fan of these "I'm deeply committed to this franchise/college -- until I get a better offer" coaches.

He may end up living to his rep, but I am unimpressed to date.

Don't leave out the part where he did this in his first year with a previously 2-14 team and without a good QB.

That team had a lot more talent than what the 2-14 record would dictate.

For one thing, many people believe O'Brien will finally be the Belichick protege who will succeed as an NFL HC

Perhaps more significantly though, how he handled being HC at Penn State following the Paterno/Sandusky mess is what really had teams intrigued about him

Personally I have done a complete 180 on Watt, he sees like a boring person and he is by far over saturated right now. Same as Peyton Manning a couple years ago.

Re: Hard knocks 2015 texans

From what I took away from episode one is that the Redskins have taken a step foward to being that tough physical team we hope for. In one scene Ryan Mallet said something about his team being the softest in the league. Then continuing on to say that they(Redskins) are pushing us around and drilling us into the ground. Now hey I know, the Texans aren't the toughest in the league but it shows we're taking baby steps foward!

True. However, they still had Foster, Johnson and Watt.

And the two years prior to the collapse they were 12-4 and 10-6.

9-7 with 4 wins coming against 2 teams that five wins between them. I would bet that, in almost any other division, they would have ended with a losing record.

The episode definitely showed the Texans in a more favorable light during the joint practices (to be expected of course), doesn't really match up with reality from what I've read.
