OTA's : Quarterbacks

Anybody see the Redskins.com coverage of the quarterbacks at the OTA's? One thing stood out. Brunell still sucks. All his throws (the few I saw) were either wide, behind the receiver or underthrown. Sound familiar? So maybe the FO knew a little something after all when drafting J. Campbell. He looks awfully good and HIS throws were crisp, accurate and pretty. He will be the #2 to Patrick by the time the season starts. Even as a rookie, this is a great insurance policy. Brunell as a #3 is even a stretch. He should retire, give back some of the money and hold a clipboard.

Exactly. Let him talk about the good ol' days like when he had to walk 10 miles in the snow to throw crappy passes.

Man, the OTAs are great. The Dline one was hella boring. They also talk about Santana Moss and Antonio Brown racing, which is something I'd love to see in one of them. The defensive drills is probably my favorite. Nothing like watching big guys fight over a cone!

Hell I could play better then Burnell. J. Campbell does look good though.

The only bad throw I have seen in any of the clips was when Ramsey missed Cooley by about 10 yards!

poor Mark his career is done, but now we know why the Redskins used the 25th pick on Campbell............Hassellbeck wasn't the answer either......like I always say,
"IN GIBBS I TRUST"..........Joe saw something in Campbell he liked, and his friend and former QB Doug Williams seems to concur on what he saw at the Senior Bowl..........
I think its nice that Williams let Campbell wear #17............no number controversey ...

Actually, I did enjoy that Dline one. Only because of the story that they told at the begining about the undrafted Free Agent who slept on the sidewalk outside Redskins park so he wouldnt be late to pracitce.

True, Gmac. Good to see a guy with that kind of dedication!

Monk - that debate can go on forever, no doubting Campbell is a very talented QB.

He could hardly say no when they had already let Danny W wear it.

I think Williams always regarded number 12 as his 1st choice number anyway - he only wore 17 in D.C.

ASs for Brunell - he had some excellent years in Jacksonville but he has taken too much punnishment over the years and it has caught up with him. He was a good mobile QB who has lost his mobility. He never did have a rocket to begin with.

dblanch66 05-20-2005 03:23 AM

Re: OTA's : Quarterbacks

You're right, Dieselhog. Now he's a QB with no mobility and a noodle arm. If he's such a devout "christian", he should give some of the money back out of good conscience. Which is why drafting Campbell was a smart move in my opinion. He will be our starter one day. Remember, eagirl fans booed the drafting of Donovan McNabb and he's done ok. Except for chucking it in the SuperBowl (according to T.O.).

Re: OTA's : Quarterbacks

I'm glad Campbell looks good, but I'm not exactly following why Brunell sucking vindicates that pick. We didn't draft Campbell to be our number 2, but to compete for number 1. It's Ramsey we should be comparing him to. You don't trade 3 picks to draft a backup qb.

Also, I've made this point before, but my attitude was in Gibbs we trust with Brunell, when he pursued the washup for inscrutable reasons. After that debacle it has shifted to in Gibbs we hope.

That being said, I really hope Campbell is good.

Maybe I missed it, but I didn't even see any clips of Brunell. Just Ramsey and Campbell.

Campbell looks like Brunell circa 1996

Re: OTA's : Quarterbacks

It's still early, QBs are going to look rusty this time of year. I know Brunell-bashing is quite popular, but I'm actually rooting for the guy to come back strong, especially if we need him should Ramsey go down.

It's also way too early to start forming opinions on Campbell. I'll wait to see how he looks when the bullets are live.

Good man Matty, I thought I was alone in pulling for Brunell to bounce back, he has been a solid pro his entire career and I'm not gonna give up on him because of one bad year.

Re: OTA's : Quarterbacks

I don't have any hate now for Brunell. He stunk it up and I'm sad we spent SO much money on him. I'd love him to come back strong, but if Ramsey AND Campbell go down. I know he SHOULD be #2, but I think Campbell should get his reps in game time too.

I cant get the clips to show here at work. getting general erros even though i ahve installed and uninstalled real player a few times.. but i am glad campbell and ramsey look good coach gibbs likes to have a starter in waiting at QB that's why he went and got Brunnell to start with.

One bad year with an offense around him that certainly didn't help the issue any.

I also think his hammy after the 1st Giants game bothered him more than he let on.

Re: OTA's : Quarterbacks

Not only that, we HAD to have some kind of scapegoat! :)

I think it's time to start watching the highlight films again. Those always get me pumped. Anyone who wants them just PM me.

TheMalcolmConnection 05-20-2005 12:58 PM

Re: OTA's : Quarterbacks

Watching those films really makes me miss having Coles. I LOVE the way the guy plays. My favorite play he made all year was that first down catch he made where Lito Shepard or someone knocks the hell out of him and he stands up and dances halfway down the field with the first down sign. Classic moments.

dblanch66 05-20-2005 01:44 PM

Re: OTA's : Quarterbacks

ok. if Brunell gets into a game next year and blows it (say, against ....Dallas) for us like he did on several occasions last year, EVERYONE on this forum will be calling for his nuts on a platter and screeching for him to be replaced and the "hoping for a bounceback year" will be a distant, off-season memory. I still have echoes of all the Redskins fans hollering in my ears last year at Hollywood Billiards, crying for the posse to take Marky to the scaffold after a couple of fumbles, errant off target passes and a few bad picks :Flush: And finally, how does anyone here KNOW that Campbell was drafted to compete for the starting job?? He was drafted to be a quarterback for the Redskins, period. Everyone is screaming about trading draft picks, but next year's cap numbers aren't going to allow us to draft and sign #1 type guys and be able to pay them. There is some long term thinking going on here and when all is said and done, the franchise will be better off for it.

Yea! That was a money play....it was there Safety Lewis who knocked the crap out of him! But I hate Coles and what we allowed him to do to us. take 9 milliion and run AND get a new contract from the Jets! Wow....Coles didn't use any lubrication on that interlude did he?

Re: OTA's : Quarterbacks

HA! That's something my friend says all the time... but seriously he didn't screw us as bad as we are led to believe. Granted, complaining about 90+ catches was kind of crappy BUT he handled it like a man and a combination of Snyder being a jackass and the Post story getting out is what led to the MAJOR problem.

Re: OTA's : Quarterbacks

They can still use Brunell when they decide to run the "prevent offense".

Re: OTA's : Quarterbacks

i have to admit that the more i think about brunell and his game soo totally falling apart
the more this snatch and grab of campbell was well adviced. in this league you've got to have a couple of good qb's. hasselback had everything but, an arm. and brunell had everything and now has nothing.sad to see, i liked brunell. but if he contiues like this why carry him?see if he will give some of the bonus back and give him his papers.let him see if he can hook on with someone else.:Flush:

He'd have to be hanging out with Ricky to fall for a deal like that. I'm sure HE thinks he still has it, AND why not get paid to sit on your ass?

Plus the 9 million cap charge is done after this season....no dead money hanging over the Skins salary cap for years like they had in the not so distant past (for Coles at least...all teams have some dead money). It actually helps us for next year's cap.

Re: OTA's : Quarterbacks

What the hell are you guys talking about??? Brunell was the MAIN reason we lost so many games last year. I am not saying we should have been contenders for the Super Bowl, but damn he was awful... I mean he couldn't even hit a moving target, that is why we had all of those screens last year. I am SOOOOO glad Gibbs finally realized that he was not the answer. Ramsey came in that Giants game and threw 3 ints in one half but still almost got us the comeback victory because he can MOVE THE BALL.

Bruneel was great in the 90's. BUt if he left the team I would be a happy camper. The money that we paid him we could have gotten a very serviceable back up. At that time I think Garcia, Warner, Collins, and a few other QBs were available... Thise guys can at least still trow the ball down field...

Brunell did help out by restructuring his salary. I liked Brunell in his early career, he looks done now though. He's a good character person .........

Redskins: Brunell restructures his deal

News
Redskins' quarterback Mark Brunell helped out his team by agreeing to restructure his contract on Thursday. The Washington Post reports that the 12-year veteran agreed to a new contract that will save the team roughly $1 million in salary cap space. In nine starts last season, Brunell completed seven touchdown passes and six interceptions.

I'm with you on that Matty, so long as he's a Redskin I'm definitely pulling for him. Who wouldn't root for every player at every position on our team to be great (or at least serviceable)? It's not like Brunell intentionally sabotaged our season...he just lost it that's all.
