Clinton Portis files for Bankruptcy

I remember all the comments about how "Portis' Pockets Straight", back in the day. Guess it isn't true. I didn't like him his final few years here, but i sort of feel bad for him. He was a good football player but when you would hear him talk, it was evident he was not very intelligent. Very sad case really. He owes 500,000 to his own mother, and over 400,000 dollars in unpaid child support to four women. He made more than 42 million in his NFL career, but he obviously blew his money and made bad investments. I do sort of blame his handlers and all the people who were leeching off of him. He has like no future really, he can't go into broadcasting or announcing, i wonder what he will do. Maybe the skins give him some kind of job here helping out so at least he can earn an income.... |
Re: Clinton Portis files for Bankruptcy
he does radio and sideline reporting, and he has spots on csn too, it won't pay off $5m though.

Dude obviously made some bad decisions with his money, including trusting people he should not have, but that doesn't make him unintelligent. Naïve...yeah... |
Re: Clinton Portis files for Bankruptcy
Definitely not the first athlete to have this problem.
Why does he have no future? I've seen him on NFL Network and other outlets doing broadcast work. |

Just by saying that I can tell you're not very intelligent. Of course you can tell that from the way someone speaks. |
Re: Clinton Portis files for Bankruptcy
I know a few things about CP and his gambling habits so I'm not surprised. I don't think CP is a dummy but he made some real bad decisions.

So now you're talking 21 million. Certainly a lot of money but when you have gambling issues, numerous babies and baby mom's to take care of, homes and car notes, insurance on all that, plus the life style...travel, jewelry. Then you add in a bad investment or two...that 21 million can go real quick. |

sounds like a long list of poor choices and life decisions. If you have 21 million, make sure you don't spend more than 21 million (or whatever the number is). he had money, he should have gotten a good accountant and planned ahead. it's not like he didn't know NFL careers are short. |

The best thing he could probably do is attempt an NFL comeback, but i'm not sure how that would work because he sued the NFL in the concussion lawsuit. I think he would probably make a good backup RB, and he for sure was a beast in pass blocking, but i'm not sure at 34 would he have the work ethic to keep in shape and attend practice. He would not be babied on another team like he was here. But, i think if you sign him at veteran minimum he would not be any risk. |

He won't have to, that's why he filed for bankruptcy. |
Re: Clinton Portis files for Bankruptcy
He was on ESPN980 and explained what happened. It's a sad deal.

he's way to old now and probably out of football shape. you saw how well cooley's comeback went. |
Re: Clinton Portis files for Bankruptcy
RB is a young man's position, nobody would want him at this point.
|
Re: Clinton Portis files for Bankruptcy
Not to say I don't need to lose a few (or dozen) LBs, but Portis was looking a little chunky last time I saw him on TV. Typically it seems like the skill players get fat post-football and the linemen get all skinny.
|
Re: Clinton Portis files for Bankruptcy
a lot of those linemen aren't naturally chunky and are basically force feeding themselves. the ones that want to live past 60 do the smart thing and ditch the extra weight.

Yeah, I heard that radio segment as well. 1. He said he bought his mom a house paid in full. Then someone took out a mortgage/loan on it that he didnt even know about and the mortgage/loan defaulted. Czabe pressed him saying "how can you be responsible for a loan you didnt even sign or see?" ... portis said that is what he is fighting right now. I am guessing only the people named on the home's title could take out a loan, im guessing his mom took out a loan on the house. 2. casino investment went wrong. apparently lots of star athletes on this deal but clinton was named as "primary" or something like that. he said he was the lead guy bc he was making money back then .... he is currently suing the investment dealer guy. sad to see but not unexpected. money goes quick. |

This is why some people don't deserve shit. Probably went to the government for a handout modification afterwards. |
Re: Clinton Portis files for Bankruptcy
Mark Brunell also wound up filing for bankruptcy a few years back as well.
|
Re: Clinton Portis files for Bankruptcy
brunell got suckered into a bad real estate investment scheme of some kind. he talked about it on 980 a while back, but i forget the details.
as for his mom's house, if he paid it in full and signed it over to her (bad move), then someone could trick her into signing a mortgage and the house could be taken without his signature or involvement, and he could be trying to fight it as predatory. i don't really care enough to look into it. |

This was right before Jacksonville's famous "depression" where basically real estate became worthless and the city itself flirted with declaring bankruptcy. Anyway, long story short, some of the other players defaulted on making their share of the mortgage payments, leaving Brunell to attempt paying the loan with his own funds. Keep in mind that the building was never developed, it was basically abandoned. Brunell did it for as long as he could, but eventually declared bankruptcy. It was his business that went bankrupt, not him. I understand that he got to keep his cars, houses, etc, it was just his company (that also owned a chain of whataburger locations) that went belly up. |
Re: Clinton Portis files for Bankruptcy
thanks for the info.

Re: Clinton Portis files for Bankruptcy
Wanted to update those who cared about the Portis situation. He is now close to being evicted, and on official documents he listed that he has only $150.00 in his checking account. Even though I was not a big Portis fan, this is still sad.

I would think his teammates would take care of him. Does he have a job ?

Why would they do that when he made the type of money he did? |
Re: Clinton Portis files for Bankruptcy
Considering that certain debts are not dischargeable in bankruptcy (i.e. child support, federal tax liens), Clinton looks like he's going to have some difficulty moving forward. I'm sure he can get some relief in his custody case based on his new income, but the liens normally don't go away.
