Draft Busts. How do they fool us and the NFL?
Steve Wyche on Robert Griffin III: 'He is an absolute afterthought' - NFL Videos
I saw this video today and started thinking about how it should have been obvious to all involved that RG3 was not NFL material. This is not a post to bash on RG3, we've already done that. The question i'm posing is more simple. How do these guys fool us as fans, and worse, fool NFL pros like coaches, scouts, GM's, etc..? You'd think after seeing so many NFL busts over the years, that possibly some better, more thorough system of some kind would be in place to stop this sort of thing. Is it just so easy to fool these guys by having a rocket arm or being able to run a fast 40? Not a joke thread, I just seriously wonder about this kind of stuff when we see so much in hindsight.... |

Maybe if his knees were stronger RG3 could have made a career

Re: Draft Busts. How do they fool us and the NFL?
Frail looking football players don't last...RGIII always looked to me skinny and frail add the fact that he liked to run around was a disaster waiting to happen..what you get away with in college does not mean you can transfer that to the NFL.However with all that said his rookie year was great but after that injury and the NFL D coordinators had tape on him they shut him down making it hard on him to continue that level of play..He is not our first QB taken high in draft to not pan out..anybody remember Heath Shuler?? I don't fault anybody on a miss in the draft but really have a problem with Free agent bust..how the heck did they screw up the Fat Albert Haynesworthless choice and the Donovan Mcnabb should have retired an Eagle signings..you can whiff a draft pick but not a major Free agent signing..just ask the texans about that !!

Re: Draft Busts. How do they fool us and the NFL?
We are doing great here discussing past NFL busts, but my question specifically was, what are these guys doing in college, in workouts, etc., that are fooling all of the talent evaluators into making them think that they will succeed in the NFL.
RG3 is actually a great example i guess, because he was always skinny and frail, i believe he had two major knee injuries while at Baylor, and one total knee reconstruction. Somebody somewhere should have realized he couldn't take hits at the pro level, but i guess they were enamored enough by *something*, that they figured on their team that stuff wouldn't happen to them. Here we are not even five years later and RG3 has played his last down. I would say had it not been for that fluke 2012 season, we could talk about him just like Ryan Leaf or Jamarcus |
Re: Draft Busts. How do they fool us and the NFL?
2012 was a crazy yr for me as a fan and personally, one I'll never forget. I'll always remember RG3, he sparked so much energy back into me as a fan of this team. Yeah he was a 1 yr wonder but damn that was a fun 1 yr.

Re: Draft Busts. How do they fool us and the NFL?
RG3 could have lasted a lot longer and probably even have been better if he had just learned to slide.

Re: Draft Busts. How do they fool us and the NFL?
Griffin can't protect himself, refuses to try to protect himself and can't beat you from the pocket. He's had plenty of chances when healthy so the knee was never the issue.
High risk w/ spread qb's. You can go all the way back to Andre Ware. It rarely works. Yet every year they' re taken high with multipe picks involved. Watson will struggle in Houston. Trubisky doesn't have a chance in hell. The kid from Texas Tech? He might have a chance cause of Andy Reid. Maybe, |
Re: Draft Busts. How do they fool us and the NFL?
The point ,it's not an exact science .I don't think they are fooling anyone or trying to.The draft for lack of a better explanation is luck.Yes you do your homework and try to cut down on mistakes and improve your odds but in the end it comes down to....can these college players adapt to the NFL game which is much different, some can and some can not.

Re: Draft Busts. How do they fool us and the NFL?
Snake...I think it comes down to teams (scouts, gm, coaches, owner) just become enamored with what a player did in college, no matter the system. RGIII's case is a perfect example...sure he was in that spread offense (who isn't these days) but he lit it up and ran all over people. Couple that with his bright personality and starving for QB team like the Redskins could not resist...especially the owner in our case. I remember plenty of talking heads saying they would not take him that high and that durability was legit concern, but in the end, they took him on the "chance" that he'd be great and overcome those things.

I'm sure there were people inside Redskin Park that probably said not to do that deal. It was the exact same thing with the Browns and Manziel. Jerry Jones had to be talked out of taking the guy by his own son. I actually think the Browns did the right thing this year. They waited for a QB that they didn't have to reach for. Where the Texans and Bears took too much risk, as did the Rams last year. These teams that are hard up for a QB fall into the same trap that Snyder did. |

Now you hear the samething from the Bears organization...John Fox had no clue about the move up and didn't want trubisky after the Glennon signing. Apparently the GM Pace believes Trubisky skill set is that of Luck. Pretty much this. It's the unpredictability of the human factor. Too many variables that you can't account for outside of 40 times and bench press reps. |
Re: Draft Busts. How do they fool us and the NFL?
i think you have to value game tape over measurables.
you have to consider the type of assignments they were asked to carry out. it's important to understand not just their character but also their football character, do they love the game? consider level of competition faced. and their size, like mentioned w rg3, small and frail is not a good thing in the nfl. drafting for combine superstars or guys that dominated weak competition in a simplistic offense - it's easier to get "fooled". |
Re: Draft Busts. How do they fool us and the NFL?
Hindsight is 20/20 and when you look back at when RG3 was drafted we were desperate for a franchise QB. Decisions made in desperation usually don't end well. Just speaking for myself however, I marvel how every year no matter how much I might say I want to look at things on a rational level, my emotions and dedication to the team always cause me to wear rose colored glasses. I just can't help it.
On the RG3 draft the only silver lining is that the RAMS did nothing with the picks we gave them except to march them out for the coin toss. Jeff Fisher, what a tool. On some level we won that one. |

Another thing is knowing how well the players fit their system, which Snyder never considered in the Vinny days. He would swoon over a big name and never considered if they ever played in the coaches style of attack. Adam Archuleta was a well known name but had no experience playing in the defensive schemes Gregg Williams employed. What a shock he didn't replicate the same level he did in his previous team? The Patriots and Steelers have more hits than misses and The Bengals are very good at drafting players, to the point they eschew free agents(though Mike Brown not wanting to spend money has a lot more to do with that than anything). And though Shanahan was bad at drafting almost every other position he knew what to look for in runningbacks come draft day. He never missed in that position. |
