Offense: Biggest Questions Going Into Camp
Lets Talk Some Offense
My Biggest Questions going into Camp and then the Season: 1. Can we run the ball more effectively? Drafting Perrine, Fat Rob the #1...transitioning away from Jones. Gruden calling the plays as well....all this factors into what I consider a major weakness which didn't get a lot of talk last year. When we run the ball we win. Can we do it more consistently and more importantly...more effectively. We improve the Red Zone offense when we can run the ball and attack it with more balance. 2. Can Pryor and Doctson replace DJax and Garon at WR? My head said yes, but a lot of questions here. First how healthy is Doctson? Can he stay on the field? Also, when I hear about Crowder moving to the outside it causes me to speculate Doctson isn't trending in the right direction. T Pryor...he is doing all the right things this offseason. Expectations are high...can he be that deep threat we need? 3. The impact of losing McVay as O-Cord, how big? Gruden is now primary playcaller. I think we will know relatively soon. My feeling, don't care about McVay gone, think he was overrated. I like Gruden stepping into playcalling duties...think it will elevate the offense. Aight...what do you got..opinions? |
Re: Offense: Biggest Questions Going Into Camp
4. Will KC sign a long term deal?
|
Re: Offense: Biggest Questions Going Into Camp
The lack of the run was always a bit of a misconception to me. We went with the run less because our offense relied on a first down passing attack. That simply leads to less runs. I do like what I see in Perrine, but I don't think any back will be a superstar here simply because we use the run as a complimentary piece first. Now if JG changes his historical trends like Gibbs did, then maybe we see a more balanced attack, but seeing as how we waited for Perrine, I don't see a change happening.
I love our receiving corp right now. I wonder how JG actually feels about taking over the offense again. Does the fact that they didn't hire a new OC mean that he's more on the hook for KC's success. I don't think our new DC can step in and handle the game side enough to relieve Gruden of any game time defensive responsibilities, so I could see our offense suffering just from the pressures placed on Gruden in close games. |

yes. maybe here maybe not, maybe in 2019, not 2018 (if we FT him again), but eventually, yes I do believe he will sign a long term deal somewhere. (what if he did walk away from the game in 2019 after playing out a FT next year. It would be the ultimate Sports Mike Drop moment... 76mill and boom!) |

I think we will be able to do that mainly because of playcalling and Perine. I might be overly confident about Pryor... but I love the guy, watched a few Browns games from last year, and I was impressed. BTW NFL network talked about him signing here in their top 50 need to know stories entering this season. I know... NFL network... But it shows expectations are really high. And I think they're gonna be met and then some! |

I think we'll find the defenses aren't quite as stretched this year, and the staff knows they'll need a battering ram to soften them a bit. And that doesn't even speak to the red zone. Everything works better around the 5 when the LBs' first step has to be forward instead of backward. |

I've been a big Doctson fan since we drafted him. Would hate that he's either "injury-prone" or will be one of those players who just doesn't latch on in the NFL (Malcolm Kelly, Devin Thomas). Granted, it's still early. But your point has made me think a bit. |

Crowder getting more PT is a good thing, dude deserves it until Doctson proves otherwise.

true, but who plays slot? Maybe we move to less slot set more double TEs? I don't know and Crowder has earned a shot...but that's a first round pick. Doctson needs to step up. Im worried he might get hurt during the physical this week. |
Re: Offense: Biggest Questions Going Into Camp
I am wondering if our tendencies to go away from the run in previous years was more on McVay than it was Gruden? I hope Gruden does call a more balanced offensive attack.

I think the run game is a scheme issue more then a personnel issue. And the scheme hasn't changed. 2. Can Pryor and Doctson replace DJax and Garon at WR? I think Pryor can match DJax in terms of being a depth threat and may be a better all around receiver (more routes, better blocking). I've always liked Doctsun and I think he's gonna be good. But I think Garcon was a very underrated receiver. Tough guy that made tough catches and added some 'dog' to the WRs/offense as a whole. 3. The impact of losing McVay as O-Cord, how big? Gruden is now primary playcaller. I don't think there will be any negative impact on the offense at all from losing McVay. I think he's a good offensive mind but the scheme being used is Gruden's baby. |
Re: Offense: Biggest Questions Going Into Camp
Moving Crowder to the outside .... I think in this offense, the slot receiver probably is the sexiest spot. Seems like we run a lot of choice routes and being in the slot, you may have more options and if Kirk sees a LB covering you, good chance you are getting the ball.
Reed, davis, niles paul could step out. Harris and Quick seem to be taller and not in "flash" speed, quick twitch category but im sure they could see time there as well. |
Re: Offense: Biggest Questions Going Into Camp
ThIS ENTIRE SEASON WILL BE THE KC SAGA.
|
Re: Offense: Biggest Questions Going Into Camp
As for the Q
I'm going with run blocking. Last yr Rob had a bunch of plays where he didn't get the push inside. |

My only concern is improving in red zone. I think thats just as much scheme as talent. Punch that mother trucker in!!! Only 17 more days till 1st pre season game. |
Re: Offense: Biggest Questions Going Into Camp
I think Doctson and Perrine will be the tell alls for our success this season.
If Doctson is healthy and plays like the worth of a 1st rounder then I dont think we will miss Pierre and skinny bones DJax very much. Mostly because I think Pryor is a fecking monster and everyone is quite high on Crowder. Fat Rob was/is a half decent running back.... Pretty sure no one fears him. Perrine? We haven't seen him play a down.... Maybe he can strike some fear... If Doctson and Perrine show up we can contend, maybe even more so than last year. I also think Brian Quick can make an impact though no one is talking about him. |
Re: Offense: Biggest Questions Going Into Camp
Running game will improve immensely
I would imagine with drafting a strong inside the tackles runner. Play calling hopefully improves in the red zone as a rejuvenated running game should provide Gruden with more options. Fingers crossed for Doctson, but if he gets another significant injury this season, we will seriously consider drafting another receiver in 2018. I think Harris and Quick can really contribute though, just how much we will have to wait and see. This season will be very interesting. |
Re: Offense: Biggest Questions Going Into Camp
For me the biggest question is definitely the running game and the red zone. I think Perine will make a difference in short yardage. In general the running game should be better because of the removal of Jackson from the lineup. Guy just didn't block. When he was in the game they had a serious tendency to run to the other side of the field. I think they can do things like motion Pryor down and have him trap somebody to the inside. I can see that springing Thompson around the edge, stuff like that.
On the red zone, if short yardage running is better then the red zone automatically gets better. As for red zone passing, I feel like Cousins doesn't have any excuses anymore with this personnel. These WRs and TEs are custom-built for red zone success. It needs to result in improvement. I still feel like it hinges on Kirk though. For some reason it's an open question in my mind: how much of our red zone woes last year were on the small receivers and how much was Kirk? Huge question mark. If it's good, we make the playoffs. If it's not, we don't. |

I am really excited about the addition of Pryor, and can't wait to see how much he brings to the offense. |
Re: Offense: Biggest Questions Going Into Camp
We're not going to be able to replace the deep threat ability of DeSean Jackson. However, we can still have deep threats and we will still be able to stretch the ball with Pryor and Doctson. But it's a very good point about adding some more wide receivers who can also block. That will open up our running game even more and give Cousins more time. It all sounds so good on paper, but I can't wait to see it applied on the field.

Re: Offense: Biggest Questions Going Into Camp
7 > 3
Red zone TD% will have a huge input on how many games we win. Especially early in the season when defense is still trying to gel. |
Re: Offense: Biggest Questions Going Into Camp
T Pryor----from what Ive read-----is extremely fast for his size. I thought it was telling when in spring they announced Pryor would be taking D Jax position and not Doctson. Id forget if that's X or Y, but they are expecting T Pryor to stretch the field.

Yes he is, 4.38 40 time if I remember. It's not Jackson's 4.2 but it's still a threat. |
As for the Q
I'm going with run blocking. Last yr Rob had a bunch of plays where he didn't get the push inside.
It is about run blocking or lack of effective run blocking. It is our weakness on offense. IMO saying play calling and scheme is the reason we were not a good running team last year is short sighted. We passed more and ran less out of necessity, because we could not dictate run, we got stuffed. Proof is in the short yardage/goal line situation stats, we were terrible at running it in the end zone in short yardage. Fade, Fade, pass to the TE was our goal line offense last year. So predictable. We are not balanced in run blocking up front. We have only two good run blockers, Silverback and Brandon Scherff. Plus our starting TE is not a run blocker. Shawn Lauvao is inconsistent and is injured all the time. Morgan Moses is an excellent pass blocker but is still not a maul em run blocker yet. But I really like Morgan Moses. I was disappointed we did not draft a Mauling OG early or sign one in FA to solidify our O-line. Just like last year we suffered with a lack of tallent at D-line. This year might be our OG position. We had one game last year where we ran at will on our opponent and that was we were forced out of injury to bring in Ty Nsehke to LT an moved Trent Williams to Left Guard. |

Best of both worlds: Size and speed. Our redzone % should go sky high! |

He's fast, but I have seen the term "long-strider" used to describe him a lot. Generally, when I see that used to describe a WR, it's rarely positive and is generally a knock on their route running. "Yes, he has a fast 40, but he's a long strider who isn't going to fool anyone" or "Yes, he's fast but he's a long strider who doesn't separate well in short to medium routes." I also read that Kirk was having some trouble adjusting to the way Pryor runs, but that might just be regular growing pains as a QB gets used to a new receiver. I don't know if Pryor's speed is just a straight line thing or if his combo of speed, height and strength makes up for any alleged route running issues. My guess is that he is going to be solid and that while he won't cause safeties to drop 20 yards off the line, his deep speed will have to be respected. I am really hoping that he continues to polish his skills and grow as a WR. If he does, he could be very dangerous in both the long game and in the Red Zone - something at which DJax really didn't excel. Re: Offense: Biggest Questions Going Into Camp
I think Pryor will be just fine. It's Docston that needs to prove himself. Pryor is coming off a pretty good season with multiple QB's throwing him the ball. This is basically Doc's rookie year.
I'd also look out for Mo Harris. The coaches really like him a lot. |

Re: Offense: Biggest Questions Going Into Camp
Reed's body is simply not built for professional football. He's already hurt again and he hasn't even practiced yet.

Re: Offense: Biggest Questions Going Into Camp
Add Reed's health to the list as the #1 question for the offense. Ugh.
Hope it's just precautionary. Turf toe can be a nagging thing. |
Re: Offense: Biggest Questions Going Into Camp
Reed doesn't need a ton of work in the preseason, making sure he's set for week one is the top priority.

think it was stupid to not keep jackson, guy was the only wr or player on the team who was a threat to go all the way everytime he got the ball.

I loved DJax, but it was time for him to go. He is still a threat, but he isn't THE threat he was. I think our WR corps will be as good or even better this year. |

his age and value-to-contract...seems like the right time to move on. |
Re: Offense: Biggest Questions Going Into Camp
Pryor, Doctson, and Crowder can all get deep, I'm not terribly concerned.

Kirk Cousins was just asked about Pryor's athleticism in his press conf, his face just enlightened. He seems happy to have this kind of weapon at his disposal.

Already injured...FFS
Yes this sucks, but it's still too early to panic about this.. Beside this could be a blessing in disguise - this will force Cousins to work more with other receivers, especially Pryor while practicing offense. Reed knows what he is doing, as shown in his performance, thus he doesn't need lot of practice in this offense system. |
