Redskins don't plan on third straight franchise tag for Kirk Cousins
INDIANAPOLIS -- The Washington Redskins don't anticipate using the franchise tag on quarterback Kirk Cousins.
Redskins senior vice president of player personnel Doug Williams said Wednesday that he doesn't think they would try to tag Cousins for a third straight season. Re: Redskins don't plan on third straight franchise tag for Kirk Cousins
Weird, a lot of media stirring the pot for clicks and trying to shit on the Skins, that never happens.

Definitely the final one. Perhaps. Maybe. Probably not.

Re: Redskins don't plan on third straight franchise tag for Kirk Cousins
Unless we win the Super Bowl, three years from now we'll have a pesky faction on here second guessing every move the Skins made with Kirk, making the case that if we stuck with him we woulda had a chance. And they'll ignore the fact that Kirk was not going to sign with us long term.
Some people just like to live in the past. I'm ready to march forward with Smith. |
Re: Redskins don't plan on third straight franchise tag for Kirk Cousins
I expect a weekly back and forth all next year based on how he plays each game. The haters will be all over him for any bad games and the Kurt lovers will insist we’re doomed whenever he throws 3 TDs and 300 yards.

Snyder started poisoning that well right off the bat when he gave RG3 the keys to the city and meddled when Shanny wanted to move on from Griffin. Smith was also treated very poorly by the 49ers way worse than Kirk had it here, yet he never complained and was a good teammate. Nothing against Kirk, he just doesn't have the thick skin that Alex Smith has. |

when we start off 2-0 we will all relax and enjoy the ride |
Re: Redskins don't plan on third straight franchise tag for Kirk Cousins
When will people wake up and realize half the crap you hear about this team is made up by the sports media. No offense against some of those who work in sports media who are more ethical when it comes to reporting news, but I never ONCE heard anything from the team, officially, about tagging Kirk Cousins for a third straight time. Better yet, I even remember around the time the season ended - or maybe even before - the Redskins brass actually said they were not interested in tagging Cousins again. Yet, that sort of got swept under the rug and everybody ignored it.

Important note from @PSchrags this morning: Kirk Cousins will be looking for a mostly-guaranteed, short-term contract from a team (3-4 year deal) so he’ll be able to “double dip” and hit the market again as the price on QBs continues to go up. That interview with The Fan a couple years ago told me all that was needed to say about Kirk. When he talked about how taking less wouldn't be fair to future QBs it told me he only cared about the money. Sure winning is nice, but bottom line it was about the money. To each his own really, but he needs to put down that Jesus facade bullshit if he's going to go this route. |

It also shows why the skins said NO. |
Re: Redskins don't plan on third straight franchise tag for Kirk Cousins
I suggest a modification to the thread title. It should read:"Redskins don't plan on third straight franchise tag for Kirk Cousins after signing Alex Smith to huge contract because franchising Cousins at this point would be absurdly risky and why are we bothering with this deep in the offseason doldrums click bait, anyhow?"

Yeah, but it's the offseason so I'll click on anything about the Redskins. |

I think any team would be crazy to sign their qb to that type of deal. Maybe a 4 year with a team option for the 5th. But 4 years basically guaranteed is nearly franchise suicide. I can't see Elway agreeing to that type of arrangement. It really looks like the Jets will be the team, even if Minnesota is shooting itself in the foot with all their qb's. |

Lucky for him, you have desperate teams like the Jets who will give him anything he wants. And the Jets will be a good situation for him, because he'll be able to pad his stats to keep his market value up and any L's could be blamed on the organization, just like it happened here. |

That said, I'd love to see that shit backfire on him and he have a couple down years and his value plummet. I"m just glad the drama with KC is out of here. He didn't want to be here so fuck him. We're onto Alex Smith. |
Re: Redskins don't plan on third straight franchise tag for Kirk Cousins
Alex Smith is already my favorite Skins player. Fuck Kirk and his agent, glad they're gone.

I really don't think he controls the market though. The way the media is fawning over him, and I get that it doesn't happen - ever - that a healthy top 12 qb is a FA, you would think he does. Feels like when a guy is at the draft and falls to the 2nd day. |

Not my favorite, Trent gets that, but definitely in the top tier |
Re: Redskins don't plan on third straight franchise tag for Kirk Cousins
Must ... keep ... KC ... talk in here:
Next up on the ONE UP contract list. Matt Ryan, come on down. MATT RYAN CONTRACT: Atlanta Falcons near mega-deal for QB Matt Ryan that could pay him $30M per year | WSB-TV Expected 30mil/yr. Kirk is loving this shit.
Actually, with MRyan you have gone to the SB, if he gets 30M, that sets a cap for teams talking to KC's agent, he won't get more (better not) than MRyan. |

Trent is actually my favorite too but Smith is moving up by default without even playing yet lol. |

Word. We’re the team that had The Hogs. If Trent’s not your favorite then check your Redskins fan card. Scherff is also an acceptable answer. :oink: |
Re: Redskins don't plan on third straight franchise tag for Kirk Cousins
Trent has been my favorite player since we drafted him. BOOMER!

What the hell? I thought the market was drying up for Kirk? Something about unrealistic salary demands?
I don't think the article really is much more than agent talk for KC. Arizona isn't landing him if he really wants a 3/90 type deal. The other 3 have been known quantities. I still think, unless Minnesota gets in a bidding match with the Jets that his contract will end up around Garrapolo money. When push comes to shove the Jets and Denver both will go with the cheap top draft pick. In fact Arizona even being in the picture might even show that the agent isnt seeing the numbers he wants. Also a throw away line in the article says KC isn't overly concerned with the way the money is structured because he's made so much the last two years would seem to be a reducing of expectations since original rumors were that the Jets were going to throw a ton up front. |

Sure sucks to be GB having one of the best QBs to play the game, a guy that truly elevates the entire offense

Yeah, it's almost not even worth it, a measly 1 SB win in almost a decade of starting. They should just cut their losses. |

The money is going to come regardless, I think he'd easily trade being the top paid quarterback in exchange for having the chance to win a championship. If that means his deal mirrors Garropolo's or it's even slightly less' I think he would do it. |
Re: Redskins don't plan on third straight franchise tag for Kirk Cousins
I’m not buying this idea he’ll need to give someone a discount just to go to a good team.

I can see the Vikings and Broncos asking his agent what would be an acceptable offer to sign him, then asking if he'd be willing to take slightly less in the interest of team-building. |
